The pianist here has certainly got their work cut out. What is more difficult - the Hammerklavier Fugue, or the Grosse Fuge? Surely the latter. Beethoven himself transcribed the work for piano duet because the complexity of the writing (accidentals, multiple themes, cross-rhythms) is nigh-impossible to manage, yet still play at tempo and with excitement. This is quite some achievement. I have recorded the transcription, but in four parts (the structure of the piece can be interpreted in many ways). Good to see pianists breaking the mould and exploring non-standard repertoire. Music of this calibre deserves to be performed by anyone who wants to try. kzbin.info/aero/PLD8EqKTPZanyqelo5b1Ndb5PYSVh5z0bi

LOL perhaps, it could be a home recording (also hear a clink of glasses). But if so, even better. Means was 'live'. And love the commitment of this performance.

Winkler in fact arranged all of Beethoven’s string quartets for solo piano. He also arranged violin sonatas 3, 4 and 5, some Wagner excerpts and Mendelssohn symphonies 1 and 3 😂

I have recorded the Late String Quartets op 127 through to op 135 (all movements) and will be releasing later in 2023. Plus, hopefully, a version of the Grosse Fugue. Although the sound here is not ideal, the performance is excellent! given the outrageous demands of the work itself, the technique required for two hands only and the requirement to perform it cohesively, and phrase it with conviction or sensitivity as required. .

@@tomowenpianochannel from the looks of your channel I’m guessing you’ll be uploading them without score videos.

@@ShaunakDesaiPiano Afraid so, don't have the technology! but will publish them as pianists continue to play the same repertoire over and over again. The Grosse Fuge has been recorded by a handful of people (either solo piano or piano duet) but there are virtually no recordings of any of the other movements of the late quartets. Pianists should take up the challenge, particularly when the musical rewards are as great as in these pieces.

Really nice to see a solo transcription of one of the greatest pieces of music of all time. I do wish it was more virtuosic though. There's so much more that can be done with the piece if one is willing to demand more from the performer technically.

This is more than enough, I promise. I would’ve thought this transcription was impossible if I hadn’t heard someone play it. Adding more to it might just make it.

You love the Great Fugue so much, that you may also like to hear it in a symphonic form: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ6yXpqegKp4eas

Trust me - this is one of the most demanding things that can be played by one person alone - just so much going on at all times, it is like handling three or four maths questions at the same time. I have tried to play this as I wanted to hear it. But adrenalin does lead to lost control. To even stay in the flow mistakes are inevitable, just need to hang on and project the overall picture. Have added a few things here and there (a bigger ending to the 1st section, a deep Hammerklavier-style pedal trill in the developmental section etc). Things have also gone missing! The pianist here has managed to keep more of the notes intact but has also lost some of the possible intensity. This piece is ridiculously intense!

Thank you so much! In order to study the work with its harmonies it is very helpfull to follow it by a piano score with only 2 systems! I adore this gigantic work so much that I orchestrated it to hear it also in a symphonic form: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ6yXpqegKp4eas

Very good playing. Sadly, this transcription is subpar at best. Someday I may make my own to finally emulate the quartet on the piano which this transcription fails to do
