It's funny, but my car came with the quick shifter kit. I took it off because I like the long throw. My first car was a '64. 40 years later, I have another '64. The long throw is part of the personality. Stock 40, same door panels as yours. Cheers!

Thankyou so much. This actually helped me understand how a bus shifter would work in my 70 bug. I like tall shifters.

Thanks for the video. It explained the geometry of the shifter and knob pretty well. It also explained how the empi quick shift kit works (not directly, but indirectly). Very helpful!

Looks to me that the bay-window shifter could work well just by putting a couple of spacer blocks under it, no need to cut the tunnel.

Quick shift kits can be picked up for $10 and installed in 5 mins. For those not wanting to recreate the wheel.

With as much throw there is on the stock shifter, you'd think there were a boat paddle under the car.

That's pretty cool. I am going to do it in my bug for sure. Thanks for the info.

I don't recall but probably used all the bus shifter parts (beetle might work though). I never cut threads because when I made the mod I didn't have the tools...I do recall however that the shifter is pretty hard metal...a bit of heat on the end would probably soften it up a bit though. Thanks for watching!...it is a pretty cool mod and looks like it belongs there when all done...

shorter shifter travel is helpful...still working on a rabbit mod as well but until then just keeping all the bushings and stuff tight helps. Thanks for watching!

I bought one of the scat shifters but the ball doesn't go down into the cup as deeply as the stock shifter's does. I noticed that there is a slot at the bottom of that scat shifter for like a flat blade screwdriver. is that ball adjustable so that it can go down more deeply into the cup? I'm having a real difficult time getting into 3rd gear and it seems like if the ball went down deeper into the cup it might get into 3rd more easily?
@vw64manyrd8 жыл бұрын
I have not used the scat before. It might be that the shift rod bushing inside the tunnel is worn to the point that the rod is lower than it should be. I think there are videos on replacing the bushing. Thanks for watching!
@chrislayton20258 жыл бұрын
I had already put a new bushing in it so that's not the issue. When I look at the original stick shifter and then the scat shifter, the ball on the scat shifter does not go as deep into the socket as the original shifter.

I have a scat shifter I think in the barn someplace. hen I am there tomorrow I will dig it out and take a look.

This is an old video, so you just used a bus shifter? Or is there a way to just move the pivot cup above the ball?
@vw64manyrd6 жыл бұрын
moving the pivot further from the ball would work as well. Essentially that is what an aftermarket quick-throw shifter. There are kits to just modify the stock shifter. Thanks for watching.

+ScottFree This is just a video of how I made the shifter for my 64 beetle. Basically I was trying to show the geometry involved. There are several shifters for sale on the market and also some kits to adapt the stock shifters. I am just here for hobby. Thanks for watching!
