Jack Nicholson owned a convertible bug, Kurt Cobain from the band Nirvana owned a beetle and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has owned and restored several bugs, after his stint in the band.

Paul Newman also had a 70s vintage rag-top bug that I worked on in the days when he drove for Bob Sharp Racing. (circa 1979?) Of course he drove Datsuns on the circuit with Bob Sharp, but a bug around town.

I think driving old VWs makes these celebrities a lot more sympathetic and approachable than their Bugatti owning peers. I've met Leno and he is a total car guy - no airs and graces, just a really nice human being. I drive my Ghia every day and the reactions it gets are always positive. Some of the expensive exotic cars I have owned pigeonhole you as just someone with money and cause resentment. Girls love 'our vehicles too - a bit puzzling as my Ghia's were always referred to as a "chick's car", or "Hausfrau Porsche", but a lady once told me that it makes you look like you are comfortable in yourself so don't have to try too hard to impress. The celebrities you mentioned seem like they are like that and pretty down to earth. There's also the element of self expression that appeals: these cars can be modded in many different ways. Steinfeld's ghia has a 2 liter type 4, for instance and Fluffy's busses range from stock to wild and patinated. Our old air cooled beasts are just flat out fun to drive at sane speeds, too. How much fun is a supercar in modern day traffic really? As for your point about artists: the Beetle and Bus are design icons - I am an automotive designer and know lots of colleagues who appreciate and drive old VeeDubs...

All VWs but most especially Ghias are works of art; as are 356’s. Love them. My first car was a ‘69 Ghia hand me down from my dad that one of my brothers totaled; still miss it to this day.

@@vayabroder729 I agree, loving my Ghia, but the point about these celebs is that they could easily affor (say) a '63 Corvette or a Miura, which are also works of art - they are not as affordable or approachable as these old VWs though. Funnily enough, even though 356s are very expensive, they seem to get similar sympathetic reactions. I think it is the lack of aggression in their "faces" - round headlamps. curved surfaces, etc that appeals. Big supercars these days are aggressive and threatening and I think that turns of as many people as it creates admirers. Another thing is the VW scene - although these are old cars, all ages are involved, whereas the exotic car scene tends to have an older demographic. It is also a lot more chilled out than the "numbers matching" attitude present in (for instance) the old Corvette scene, of which I am also a part. Get a Ghia - they are affordable, you can get all mechanical parts for them and pretty easy and cheap to maintain. Shopping an bikes also fit inside, so practical, too. Live your dream!

@@hughrobinson9978 you read my mind sir! I’ve always said it: VWs and old Porsches smile at you. The newer angular cars look like they’re pissed at everyone. Read the story about the “casting” for the Herbie movie. The reaction the Bug got from everyone on the movie lot was that they would pat the car like it were a pet. These cars do elicit those reactions. When driving mine I’ve gotten sympathetic horn honking from guys in Ferraris!

@@vayabroder729 I was a Porsche designer for 15 years (981 Boxster/Cayman/GT4 range being my final exteriors) and our brand values specifically stated making our front end designs unaggressive, even though some of our vehicles were pretty quick. You can contrast this to Lamborghini as the opposite. What makes me laugh are many of todays "normal" cars that frown at you as if wanting a fight....

To stay in the “Rocky” theme; Carl Weathers (aka: Apollo Creed) bought a bug from my Dad’s VW dealership (San Jose,CA) back in my he 70’s, when Weathers played for the Oakland Raiders. My dad mentioned he was a good guy !

I remember Paul Newman was in a LIFE magazine ad for VW and although it's been a looong time, I believe he owned a 1959 convertible. Also, Olivia Newton-John bought a convertible Super Beetle when she moved to California (1975, I believe) and kept it for the rest of her life.

Ted Bundy had one.. and in the movie it showed him driving one.. he asked some victims for help push starting it. Not a celebrity ..but definitely well known. On a lighter note.. Dave Kindig, Ian Roussel, Lucky Costa, Faye Hadley all got their starts in VWs.

I believe Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward owned multiple VW Beetles over the years. They would often arrive at movie premieres and swank restaurants in them. While other celebrities were pulling up in chauffeured limos and Rolls Royces, Mr. and Mrs. Newman pulled up in a VW Bug.

Yes , The Doors drummer John Densmore had a micro bus he'd haul the band around in, I read he owned a beetle. Keyboardist Ray Manzerik eventually owned a beetle , read this from a fan who got his autograph. Billy Gibbons of ZZ top owns a custom chopped top convertible bug. Van Halen's David Lee Roth owned a '66 bug , Eddie Van Halen owned a custom '64 bug & owned micro buses , he was even spotted at VW car shows. Billy Joel purchased a restored beetle, John Lennon added a beetle to his collection, Elvis Presley owned a Meyers Manx buggy , look up Elvis drives a VW in style here on KZbin - movie clip!
