@kingVibe1114 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting because to get these visuals in the past they required a lot of work so people had to pick really good actors to do everything, time is money on one hand but also you wanted strong performances to carry the illusion all the way home. Depressing what banal performances carry most movies now.
@cineMADvocate4 жыл бұрын
@@kingVibe111 oh gimme a break. There were plenty of “banal” performances back then as well, probably more. Comparing the highly successful movies of the past to bad movies now is pretty banal in itself. “Most movies” back then were knocked for exactly what you are knocking and there are probably far more good movies now than there were back then. Lets not act like the 80s were not completely packed with absolutely shite just because we have some favorites that were made at the time as well.

This is Michael Keaton's favorite film of his own Michael Keaton, playing the title character, only appears in 14.5 minutes of the film. Catherine O'Hara met her future husband, production designer Bo Welch, while making this film. According to Welch, Tim Burton said he should ask her out near the end of filming: "It didn't even occur to me that I was even supposed to talk to actors. But since Tim told me to I did and then we dated and we're married and here we are today." The casting of Lydia came down to just two actresses, namely, Winona Ryder and Alyssa Milano, with Ryder ultimately landing the role. The film won a Saturn Award in 1990 for best horror movie. Juliette Lewis auditioned for the role of Lydia. Lori Loughlin, Diane Lane, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields, Justine Bateman, Molly Ringwald, and Jennifer Connelly all turned down the same role. Alec Baldwin dislikes the film and was very unhappy with his performance. Adam's black and white checkered shirt is the same one worn by Tom Selleck in Three Men and a Baby (1987). Winona Ryder was cast on the strength of her performance in Lucas (1986). It is hinted throughout the movie that Lydia could be suffering from depression, particularly when Lydia writes a suicide note to Adam and Barbara that she feels utterly alone. In Beetlejuice's forced wedding, Lydia's dress is bright red. According to the old rhyme about wedding dress colors: "Married in red, better off dead." Heather Langenkamp was considered for the role of Lydia after Tim Burton saw her in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Langenkamp turned the part down because she didn't want to play a goth girl. The title character is named for a bright red star in the constellation of Orion, Betelgeuse. All the people in the waiting room and in the office are in the same condition as when they died, and the way they died is shown clearly. However, the Maitlands, who drowned, are not wet. Tim Burton felt that keeping the actors wet all the time would be too uncomfortable.

Betelguese is the name of a star (which I believe is also pronounced "Beetlejuice"?) and stars play a role in the occult and Ars Goetia demonology from the middle ages. Part of that same demonology draws from ancient middle Eastern mysticism and religion (Astaroth being derived from Ishtar, Beelzebub from Ba'el, etc.) so it makes sense to me that Beetlejuice's first draft looked the way Oliver describes. It also suggests that Beetlejuice was never human in the story, but some kind of demon or imp.

I think a sequel these days could work even with the original being 33 yrs old now. The Maitlands are stuck in that house for 150 years, so the sequel is set in the present day, Charles and Delia Deets have passed on, and left the house to Lydia. Lets say since the first film, she's moved on, had a career and family of her own, but now returns to the Maitlands home. Perhaps, her children or maybe even husband/wife inadvertently re-releases Bettlejuice. Bettlejuice still holds a grudge against Lydia, which extends to her family of course. During the film we find out that at some other time he got back at the Maitlands somehow and got them exercised, which would explain Gina davis and Alec Baldwins age progression. Bettlejuice causes havoc and mayhem, as he's wont to do, in Lydias life and around the town, perhaps he wants to take over the whole town, or simply take back Lydia, or take revenge by taking her family. Something like that. Boom. Where's my check?

Fantastic work as always. This was one of those movie my Parents recorded off of I think HBO. Haven't seen it in a long time, but I do remember loving it as a kid, despite most of its graphic imagery and some vulgar moments. Seriously even most PG movies couldn't resist putting in an "F-Bomb". A Belated Happy Halloween to you Oliver.

Back when the LaserDisc was first released I used it to demonstrate the superior nature of the format over VHS. It's stunning, and was far less expensive than the VHS release.

You need to do Drop Dead Fred soon. Phoebe Cates and the late, great Legendary Rik Mayall.

This was an enjoyable, entertaining surreal fever dream of a movie. Hopefully there will never be a remake or a sequel to it. That there is one movie that encapsulates the collective artistry makes it so special and unique.

Oliver, which sonic game is your end credits music from. I recognise it, but can't place it.

Lol dude, seriously? I’m pretty sure Baldwin ‘made a name for himself’ long before spoofing trump. He was essentially an honorary SNL cast member, not to mention, his role in 30 Rock and his countless parts in movies.

Yup, he sure has made a name for himself!

Betelgeuse is a real name of the tenth brightest star in the sky and it's in the constellation of Orion.

This movie was on regular rotation on cable when I was a kid. Still such an insane movie that wouldn't be made today. I don't know what it is about Burton's early work that made it so wacky yet accessible to a mass audience.

Major News: a sequel is coming and it's called "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice."

I come from a Berensteyn universe where Oliver made the Beetlejuice retrospective years ago. Does anyone else also remember that happened already?

There is one thing I have learned about Movie/Game/TV critics: they don't know crap. They tend to present themselves as effete snobs who can't seem to be bothered into earning their pay. F' the critics; what do my friends say? Seriously, how many popular and cult movies are panned by critics and turn out to be successful and/or long lasting? And while I generally give credibility to the technical categories of the Oscars (special affects, music score, costumes etc.), I give zero credit to the others and give zero **its as to who "wins" what. I treat the Tony's and Grammy's in the exact same way as the Oscars.

As a child of the 90's I watched the cartoon first then discovered the VHS of the movie later when I was older and allowed to watch it.

As for the Betelgeuse/Beetlejuice confusion, I think I have an explanation. His name is Betelgeuse, but because he can't say his own name he resorts to miming. So... since Betelgeuse seems hard to pronounce, then part of the suspense with his character is having people guess his name. (Not unlike Rumplestiltskin). So... Beetlejuice/Beetle Juice clears up any confusion. Ralph Fiennes pronounces his first name Raeph, but because his last name starts with an F... anyone simply hearing his name thinks his name is Ray Fiennes. So long story short, Ralph is to RayF As Betelgeuse is to Beetlejuice.

I didn’t know Beetlejuice was going to be a darker including Universal as the original distributor.
