There's an explanation for it in the movie. I saw it last night. It's really good! I'm glad they didn't take the route where it shows the Maitlands as a CGI de-aged Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, as that never looks real. It's much better how they gloss over it in the sequel and it concentrated on Lydia's daughter and boyfriend.

I think that there will be a third one just from the way that the movie ended, it left a door open for us to walk through hopefully. Now the maitlands they did give an explanation as far as what happened with them, personally I'm not satisfied with that but that's okay they explained it at least but the movie so good!
