I consider this a particularly important video. One of the facts is that vocabulary is important. Imagine you are a native English speaker talking with someone from Russia who is just learning English. Of course, you would appreciate they are attempting to speak English; however, you would appreciate it more if they had a sufficient vocabulary. (Ogden's Basic English claims it is around 850 words is the point where you can piece together almost anything you want to discuss, albeit wordy; perhaps the count is similar for Russian.) Even if the Russian had minimal or no English grammar, if the vocabulary is big enough, you could have a meaningful conversation. So I imagine the converse is true were you in Russia. I have learned that when you are speaking a foreign language, just speak, even if it might be wrong--remember when you were learning to ride a bike, you didn't care how you looked, you plodded on. Eventually, there was that moment when you realized you caught on, it was effortless.

I totally relate to this. I took Russian in college but it was exactly how you described your English classes. Your channel helped me more than all the other Russian KZbin channels. I think it’s definitely the approach you take that makes it easier to understand. I feel I’ve learned more from your channel than in my college Russian classes!

Excellent ideas, Fedor! You're right, focusing on the most common, simple usages is the fastest way to fluency. I'm a native American English speaker, and if you ask me, "How often do you use a complex verb tense such as 'I will have been being bad', the honest answer is somewhere between "once in five years" and "never"! We can see how language changes by observing common but technically incorrect usages among native speakers. E.g. the subjunctive in English is rarely used except in more educated, formal speech. A Russian example of how things disappear would be how pretty much nothing remains of the vocative case except the word "Боже!" Two of my favorite personal examples of recent simplification changes in English are: -"who" as a relative pronoun is disappearing! I constantly hear "...person that..." instead of "...person who..." -"fewer" for countable objects is disappearing, in favor of "less". These changes drive me crazy, but clearly we're past the point of no return, because even radio personalities talk this way all the time.

colloquial speech vs formal grammar. sometimes one gets in the way of the other. it depends on context. it’s very challenging in learning any language, when using it in speech vs writing a formal report or a book vs an informal chat room.

17:10 it’s funny you say that. I was just wondering how you’re able to drop the Ы when speaking English. I watch other Russian KZbinrs, and find it kind of endearing when their unable to drop it. Meanwhile, I’m having trouble picking it up😄

I'm afraid to sound dumb which naturally i will haha but from my experience I've retained the best when a native speaker took the time to go over syllable by syllable when needed which was almost every word. Since they've I've expanded my vocabulary but mostly in my mind and not verbally..

My problem is that if I hear 'past participle' or 'future perfect' I shut down. I do best if things are described as direct object case, or possession case. Also, when I study vocab I first want a list of all cognates and 'false friends'. Vocab works best if you can put together a little mnemonic 'skit' in your mind to remember the word. Like 'futbolka'...a t shirt you wear playing football, for example. Will never forget it. Great vid!

You were in Vancouver B.C.? I'm from there. Vancouver would probably been the best place to learn English. We're American enough in our pronunciation, and British enough in our spelling and grammar.

я только что начал видео (и досмотрю) но хотел сказать, что английский язык проще русского. у нас простая грамматика (кроме наших времен). сложно, по моему, свравнить скорость прогресса рускоговорящего с том англискоговорящего. не говоря уже о том, что болшинство из нас не учит русский с дества. ну все равно, изучение языка занимает много времена. ну мне стоит досмотреть видео. мне иниерестно узнать о вашем language journey)) а теперь после посмотра я понял что мой коментарий почти совсем не связан с темой видео лол. ну что поделаешь. вы в польностю правы. очень важно не стесняться при разговоре с носителями. это и мне надо помнить. я живу в москве и может 2 раза в неделе говорю по русский. я работаю в школе английского и все мои сотрудники говорят со мной по английски. честно я лень и мне удобно по английски. но я должен заствлять их отказывать говорить со мной по русски. ну и посмотрим. сасибо за видео и за вдохнавение)))

In general you have a good flow of Russian. Especially cases. Just for yourself use Word or something to check your spelling. Here it was spelling not grammar most distracting to me. Я должен заставить их отказаться от общения... or Мне стоит настоять на том чтобы они перестали общаться со мной на английском ( even better)

Для меня как канадки :) большинство американцев и канадцев говорит все равно что на русском. А британцы говорят на английском.

@@jolevangelista я тоже не понимаю как протолкнули понятие "британский акцент". Британцы это изначально носиттели языка, у них по определению нет акцента. Это всё придумки американцев чтобы унизить бывшую метрополию морально. 😃
