Hi Kayla! You're welcome 😊 I'm happy to hear the video is helpful. Are you planning to get your licence? if you are then a master of architecture is required. I would always go with what you enjoy and what your good at above money. Since, you will be happier and therefore produce good work which will allow you to be more valuable in the industry. And as you mention there are job opportunities within your passion of historic buildings I would definitely move forward. This of course is only my opinion but life is too short to do something you don't enjoy. I hope this helps and keep me posted on your journey 😊

Hi Ashley, I have been following your video for last few months. I must say you are doing a great job and giving us some valuable information which eventually helping us to get a clearer picture about Architectural Practice in Canada. I am an Architect with a 5 years of BArch Degree (2010) from BRAC University (Bangladesh) and 1 year Masters Degree in Urban Design (2013) from National University of Singapore (Singapore). I have more than 9 years (2 years in Bangladesh + 7 years in Singapore) of experience in Architectural Practice. I'm currently residing outside of Canada, but willing to come to Canada and become an Licensed Architect. May I know, to become a Licensed Architect in Canada do I have to do an MArch in Canada or I can do some bridging courses to become eligible for that. Honestly, I don't want to go for another Masters if there are other easier, less time consuming and cost effective options. For your advice and Thank you in advance.

Hi Arif, it's very difficult to have a part time job while studying architecture since the program is intense. Unless the job is directly related to the discipline for example many students would work with faculty with research as research assistants or teaching assistants. This offers flexibility while studying full full time. I would recommend looking into scholarships, I have a blog with a list; www.ashleyeusebio.com/blog/how-to-find-canadian-scholarships .

Hello Ashley , im currently a second year architecture ( B.Arch ) the 5 year program and i wonder if its better to do the 4 year program (B.S Arch ) and then do have more flexibility with the masters or is it better to do the 5 years. I saw that taking the 4 year program and start to work in the filed early is important and then doing my masters will add more To it later on but I’m not sure if it goes this way out in the profession.
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 жыл бұрын
Hi George! if your doing a 5 year program, typical its already a professional program so you don't need to do a professional masters unless you still desire to do so. Programs that are 4 years are typically not accredited by the CACB. For more info I would recommend you to look into the CACB website: cacb.ca/eligibility/ . I also have a video on this topic which might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYmrfqKLfK-Ap80 . If you're doing a 4 year program that isn a professional degree, it is wise to take a year to work within the field before starting more school (this helps to build experience and financial save money for your masters degree). Taking into consideration time and finances, doing a 5 year B.Arch is better, you're spending less on your education and you're finishing your professional degree faster. I hope this helps.

Hi Ashley, I'm currently doing architectural technology diploma at Sheridan (Ontario) and set to graduate in August. I got accepted into Lawrence Tech university in Michigan for last 2 years of bachelors and straight into 2 year masters. The thing is, the idea of going into debt again just sucks, that too being in American dollars. Also, looking at Michigan, obviously Detroit area is so depressing. I feel so stupid for not applying to other schools, I applied to Carleton last year and didn't get in. What can I do to prepare myself for applying to a whole bunch of schools next year? I'd rather take a year and apply to Canadian schools and really give myself a good shot at going rather than hastily go into debt at this American school. What would you do in this situation?
@architecture_tv

Hi s-izzle! These are great questions and if you don't feel like going to school in the states then I wouldn't. It's your time and money, this is a long term investment that you should feel good about. I would instead take the summer and the year to work within the industry, saving some money for school. I would also work on applying for scholarships. So while you're doing this you're working on your portfolio 24/7. A strong portfolio is important for admission and maybe you can also get an admission scholarship. I have a video with tips which might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWbUdpp9gaeKrqs . Hi Travis! Great question. If you have an undergrad degree (Bachelors) you can do a Masters of Architecture in Canada at UBC, UofT, Carleton, and University of Calgary. These universities accept students without a Bachelors in Architecture so you wouldn't need a background in Architecture. I would focus on building your Portfolio. I'll be posting a video shortly with summer programs which might help you with building your portfolio or gaining more insight in the field of Architecture. However since you have a degree in Interior Design I feel you are more ahead than those who don't have design background.

Thank you for putting this out there Ashley! I'm a fresh graduate Architect from India and I'm looking forward to doing my masters abroad. This makes a lot of sense to me considering the economical differences between India and various countries. However, what is your opinion on university rankings? Does it matter? Do better Universities get you quicker/better jobs abroad? Also, say I go for my masters to some country because the education is affordable, and want to move to another country (not India) for a job, is that a possibility? How does one weigh post masters prospects in such cases? I'm sorry if these are too many questions to answer, if you'd prefer I wouldn't mind emailing about this to you! :)

It’s not only not necessary it’s actually dumb. If you have a professional bachelors degree in architecture from an accredited university you are able to become a licensed architect. Getting your masters would be a waste of time and money. Masters in architecture is only smart if you have an undergraduate degree in an unrelated field and are doing a career change

Hi Shawn! Thank you, happy to hear it’s helpful 😊 Great question. No it wouldn’t make a difference, in the end I’ve seen the growth of people without an undergrad in architecture and they are able to catch-up easily with those who have an undergrad in architecture. Don’t let that hold you back, I feel theres actually an advantage to having minimal experience in architecture before a masters since you can bring new ideas with a different perspective and no prejudices.

Why do you want to get into architecture after computer science?
@nicolloabe
@nicolloabe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley! I'm extremely grateful that you are making these helpful videos. For the "Apply & Decide Later" part, what's the appropriate time to apply? I'm going into my 4th year BA and I'm thinking of applying for MArch 1-2 years after I graduate. It's during this 1-2 year break that I plan to work in order to pay off all my student debt. So with that said - does it make sense to apply during my last year at BA to see what each universities have to offer? And to just re-apply again in the future when I'm financially (and emotionally 😂) ready? Also, I have a background in Arch. Technology, so I think this will help in terms of getting accepted into an accredited MArch program 🤔
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicollo, you're welcome ! I'm happy to hear the content is helpful 😊 I would apply closer to the date your planning to attend so after your one year gap. I also took one year to work in the field to gain experience and some money before grad school. It also helped emotionally/mentally so I completely understand. You're exhausted after finishing 4 years, so I believe it's a good idea to take a gab year or two. Plus you're able to take that time to work on your skills, build your portfolio and so on. So once you get closer to the time you plan to attend I would apply to as many schools and once you get acceptance letters you can decide which school has the best acceptance package or which one would be the best fit. So basically once you get your acceptance offers you can better decide which school is best. It's hard to make a decision when you haven't gotten accepted and I don't know if they will offer a scholarship. One school might offer a good scholarship that might change your mind. Your background could help, just make sure to spend sometime on building your skills and portfolio. I hope this helps 😊

Dear Ashley, if I get accepted in the intership program and I get a job as an foreign intern architect, it is possible to live with the pay that you get in that job? Because as you mentioned studying a master degree to get licensed is very expensive, and is a possibility in the future
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Albert! Yes it is possible to live with an intern architect salary. But it's important to be mindful of where you do your masters since some schools are extremely expensive like 100k per year. Unless you get a scholarship or have cash to fund 100k per year and typically a master's program is 2 years so thats 200k, then I wouldn't recommend going into that kind of debt. I personally believe it's important to minimize debt and student loans are a big issue in North America. Getting into large amounts of debt will hold you back in life from doing other things, for example home ownership. Instead I would recommend going to a local school where tuition is more reasonable (approx. under 25k) and look into scholarships to off the cost. If your thinking about eventually working in Canada as an Intern the following is the average salary (of course this number will vary depending on the city, skills, and experience): www.payscale.com/research/CA/Job=Intern_Architect/Salary . Recently, I posted a video where I provide some ideas of how you can fund your education which might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmO8dY2fbK6Wp7s Hope this helps 😊

Do you think it’s feasible to do a masters in architecture from a related undergrad program in design (from Ontario)?
@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Satjit! Definitely, you could even do your undergrad and masters at the same school as long as the masters program is accredited. I always recommend doing your masters and undergrad from different schools (you'll get more personal growth) however it is also very practical to go to the same school. Ontario has a few options of accredited programs to select from which is great. You could also have your undergrad and masters both in architecture or an undergrad that is unrelated to architecture (i.e. fine arts, interior design, philosophy, etc.) and do your masters in architecture as long as the program is multidisciplinary like UofT or UBC (the only schools at the moment that offer multidisciplinary programs in Canada).

@architecture_tv
@architecture_tv 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pranav! In general there are three key components to becoming a licensed Architect in Canada these include; Education, Experience, and Examinations. There are two options/routes to complete the process: 1. University Route: within the university route you would get your education through an accredited architecture program from a University. If your undergrad is not accredited then you need a masters degree from an accredited program. It's important that the degree is from an accredited program, a professional degree. Most post-graduates are post-professional degrees which are not accredited programs, they are more research based programs for students seeking to focus on a specific research topic. Many students after completing a professional accredited masters seek a post professional degree. If your an international graduate and your undergrad is a min. of 5 years then you are eligible to get your education verified by the CACB. I did a video on this topic here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZe0YYmubLqiopI . Also see the CACB website here: cacb.ca/academic-certification/ . Once you fulfill the education requirement you're able to start collecting your experience, and examinations. I took the university route and share my 15 year journey to licensure here (this might help you get some insight on the process): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYTbmqWNgr51pbc . 2. Syllabus Program: an alternative route is the RAIC syllabus program. Which includes both the education and experience together. I did a video on the syllabus program which might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn27qI1tbKqHZpo . Also, checkout the RAIC website here: raic-syllabus.ca/home . I hope this helps 😊
