Wish I had this info 2 weeks ago! Had a large repair where someone used to have a wood burner in a corner and used a brick veneer. It all got removed and new sheetrock put in. Used standard paper tape over the still wet fill-in. Came back to find a perfect bubble the length of the splice in the middle of the tape. Tore off the paper tape. Underneath was a perfectly smooth prefill. Sanded to remove and tape fuzz and used Fibafuse and it came out great.

I truly appreciate your videos and the attention to detail especially for beginners and the once in a while guys (me). Ceiling is hung have to do some simple repair, then the pre-fills, but should I run tape in this order... 1)Seams 2)butt joints 3) wall/ceilings inside edges Or am I forgetting everything I once knew. I'm beginning this early a.m. 2morrow. Thank you to anyone who can help. Also, except for setting tape I'm going to use plus3, but can't I also add a little bit of wood glue to the plus3 even for taping? Or no? All purpose? I have this and next weekend to mostly finish it but skim coat needs complete by 15th deadline. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out with this. Pre-game jitters!!!

We’ve always preferred to tape the butt joints first and then the seams, followed by the inside angles. There’s really no need to add wood glue for taping and it does make the mud stickier , and it dries much harder. Help! Older lady here working on kitchen remodel. Started a year ago on walls, but stopped and have restarted Most walls are going okay BUT I have a smaller section where I think I used hot mud, sanded and then used plus 3 for 2 skim coat layers. I was sanding by hand and the compound was just disintegrating in sheets and sanding completely off. I’m going to try to even out bad section with hot mud, let dry, and try again. I’m trying to figure out what I may have done wrong that caused this problem. Thoughts or suggestions ? Love your videos! Straight and to the point but detailed enough to learn from. Thank you!!

@samanthamartin3443 жыл бұрын
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY it’s possible but it probably started out as raw drywall where I removed a closet. Should I just try to level out with hot mud before a top coat?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
@@samanthamartin344 I only use hot mud when I need to re-coat quickly, or do deep fill. Otherwise just use regular or lightweight mud to smooth it out.

Man you make this stuff look so easy. Well let me tell you it’s not. I bought all of the tools and materials needed but like most new comers I forgot what I have been watching and in the middle of the mud work I’m looking at videos. Novice tip: if the repair is a good size don’t worry about getting quick dry mud because you are not good enough to complete this job in one day and you will need the mental break.

I have been doing construction work for many years, I have never understood why drywall installers started installing drywall in a horizontal position. All I see is way more joints to finish, mostly butt joints as opposed to the finish work needed when installed vertically. Can you shed some light on this topic?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
I’ll do a video on it one day but it’s too complicated to explain here. Just know that it is truly faster to do it the way we do it.
@pseudonymn2 жыл бұрын
It's simple math, really. Suppose you have a 12' by 8' wall. You can: 1.) Stand three 8' sheets up, giving you two 8' vertical joints in the middle of the wall 2.) Lay two 12' sheets down horizontally, giving you a single 12' joint in the middle. Method #2 just saved you 4' of joint that you didn't have to tape, fill, sand, and finish, a savings of 33% in time and material. Having just that situation in a single home a couple of times may not sound like much, maybe. But in a whole floor in an apartment building or a tower really adds up fast. It all depends on the situation, and a good, forward thinking boardman will look for ways to reduce to lineal feet of joints that he leaves for the taper to have to deal with.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY if I’m using mesh tape with hot mud can I apply mesh & mud at once, elimating need of extra step by prefililling?

That’s what I do most of the time when doing repairs. Just be sure to force it through the mesh and into the crack.
