Aspen wood chip bedding is perfect. I've used aspen for over 50 hedgehogs and never had a single issue or illness. I also have always used water bottles for all my hogs. They are more sanitary and better for hog and owner. But, overall good info. Remember, hogs shouldn't be sold until at least 10 weeks. There are a lot of bad breeders out there selling too early for more profit and less work. I prefer Blue Buffalo or Royal Canin cat food with some mixed in freezedried mealworms. I've had hedgehogs live over 8 years on this diet. Some veggies and fruits as snacks from time to time as well.

I enjoyed your video, thanks for spreading knowledge to future hog owners. I've had a couple that I bred and found that feeding a varied diet works well for me. I use a standard hedgie dry food and mix in a tub of dried meal worms. I can get a tub almost half a gallon of dried worms for $10 at my pet store. I use the 50/50 mix of hard food and dried meal worms as my staple. In addition I keep a tub of live "super worms" as an added treat for him. I recently saw a study that said hogs have a diet higher in insects than originally believed. The live worms are fun to scatter throughout the cage, giving him an opportunity to scavenge and hunt like he would naturally. The key is to feed the live worms fish flakes to boost their own nutritional value. Like with my reptiles, alot of feed insects are lacking nutritional value. They should be fed before giving them to your pet.

Ty Guy yeah that’s great! I would look into the ingredients of your hedgie food! Most of not all hedgie food contains a lot of fillers as staple ingredients which doesn’t do a whole lot for your hedgie :( things to avoid in the first 4-5 ingredients: corn, wheat, by products, and anything not true meat and veggies. :-)

@LivChambliss7 жыл бұрын
I personally use fleece! It's comfy and warm and reusable! But if you want something that might be a little easier to clean (but its a little more expensive) use care fresh. I use it once in a while!

Thank you the information! And thank you for always being so sweet and nice! Great information, I know people like to use other stuff for bedding, but aren’t hedgehogs buriers by nature? I would think wood shavings would hurt the little ones. I am using fleece cuz I have found many breeders who do. Long fleece don’t care lol

72° is too cold for a hedgehog. If you are not able to have a CHE setup for him, at least get a space heater.
@haleyxo53857 жыл бұрын
72 isnt too cold. You should be in the range 72-80 degrees, but the coldest you should have your cage would be 70, never below that, so yes its a couple degrees less than what it should be, but at least it isnt under 70.

Dont you have to be careful letting them around because of the salmonella in their droppings ? I’m just wondering because I want to get one but I read about the salmonella cases with their droppings and most of them were in Washington which is where I live so is it okay to let them roam around or hangout ?

Hi, I just got a hedgy like a month ago, he is an adult. 1 years or so. albino male he is not used to have a proper exercise, no wheels nothing just prob an hour being unleashed by the garden. i think he is fat, now i gave him as much exercise every day. sadly no wheels in indonesia that have the proper size for a hedgy. so i just let him run around in my back yard, while i could watch him. why? because I know for a fact there is still wild predators called musang or possum, that might be a threat to mr.gwumpy anyway most the hedgy on you tube as not as phat as mine... any advise on diet? i feed him cat food and some mealworms or crickets.. please help I dont want him to get a heart stroke... any time soon cheers
@LivChambliss7 жыл бұрын
Riyo Sudjana that is a pretty unusual case scenario. Hmm. What youre doing seems to be okay if a wheel is completely out of question (have u looked into the carolina storm wheels? Theyre typically larger) i would completely cut the worms and treats for a while and once he losses some weight limit him to 1-2 a week and really moniter what he eats when he is outside (it could be getting him fat and you dont want him to pick up any diseases too!!) it is also best to talk to an exotic vet specialist. They know best and my office visit typically range about $50.
@LivChambliss7 жыл бұрын
Riyo Sudjana cutting down on his daily meal wouldnt hurt. Just not a lot. Gradually. But u dont want to throw him off too much.
@LivChambliss7 жыл бұрын
Riyo Sudjana also be mindful of how much fat is in your catfood. It might be what is making his a little chubby!

Hi.... ( dont know ur name ) thx for the promt reply. First i dont think jakarta or indonesia that have a vet that are knowledgeable enough to know details about a hedgy, since there are not a common pet over here. We do locally have 'landak' or porcupine as u called it. First week or soo i want him not to stress being handle by me as the new owner soo maybe i over do it with treats. Hahah he soo cute But hmm speaking of i gave him friskies tuna & shrimp flav. Dont have labeled packaging because its a pre mixed by the pet shop. Frankly i dont know whether its a genuine friskies brand or just some chinese products y'know. I know fo sho that he is being fed royal canin by the previous owner. Soo like l can see the bottem leg part.. its getting plump since. My cage now is huge i think 8ft x 3ft aquarium and also i let him loose in my room allnight. Ok il go easy on the food and stop the treats, i will also instruct the maids not to fed him unless instructed by me. Thanks for the advice and good luck on your study

Your hedgehog thrives best in 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit you should probably have a heat lamp for ur hedgehog and if ur not allowed to then you should not bring ur hedgehog to college

Do you need a heat source for your hedgehog
@LivChambliss4 жыл бұрын
It depends on how warm you keep your room. You want your hedgie's environment always around 75-78 degrees so if you cant achieve that without a heat source then I would get heat lamps or a space heater!

Is a 45 inch by 20 inch bin okay for a hedgehog or should I upgrade
@cupstudios37886 жыл бұрын
It depend on the hedgehog, but 1’x3’ is okay or 2x2 is fine, cause they don’t need a lot of space cause they are prey animals large spaces will frighten them, of course getting a hamster cage would make them agressive because they need to move and play.

I recently got a chinchilla and got a 2 level cage I was wondering if I could put a hedgehog (if i get one) in the same cage as the chinchilla to make a bigger environment for the hedgie, I will get a little wheel and different food for the hedgie as well I was asking because hedgies are nocturnal and chinchillas are semi nocturnal (can't remember the word) Also I don't know if this effects anything but the chinchilla I have is a male and he has had offspring (I don't have the female as she has passed) he is 5 years old too (the offspring has been sold) I really wanna know :P peace
