My 997.1 Carrera S is a few miles shy of 100k. The IMS issue is over hyped, affecting less than 5% and if yours is over 80k miles its unlikely to be an issue. Stunning cars - a perfect balance of form and function, I love it

The IMS bearings on most 997 M97 engines post Feb/Mar of 2005 are the newer larger single row bearing and cannot be serviced easily, unlike the IMS bearings on early 2005 997s and 996s which you can replace easily with the LN solution. However, those larger bearings are more robust and the failure rate is lower. The bigger problem is bore scoring. Due to the metallurgy of the cylinder linings, bore scoring is a problem more often found on 997s in cold weather climates. Apparently when it is really cold the pistons no longer fit properly inside of the cylinder, so don’t start your 997s when its really cold. This was also potentially exacerbated by some mid-western winter fuel blends that at idle was washing away the oiling. So just be careful when shopping for a 997.1, get the bores examined if possible. I ultimately found an opted for a higher mileage 997.2 (S with 6-speed manual). A high mileage 997.2 is relatively close in price to a low mileage 997.1. If equal in miles, the 997.2 will be up to $20k more, but you get a more powerful (30hp in the S) direct injected engine without bore scoring or IMS issues and you get more modern infotainment electronics. They didn’t make as many 997.2s and manuals are more rare, but worth looking for. Great cars either way!

Any idea what temp is considered "really cold" for the starts? I had no idea that was the cause of the scoring. Thank you for the info!

I'm onboard the hype train, just bought a 997.1 Carrera S few weeks ago and I'm loving it. I like the S because it gives me options with the PASM, unusable stock IMO but throw that aftermarket controller on there and I've heard it's an amazing upgrade, and also the wider hips are even more sexy than the stock. And thanks to Covid I got mine for 30k as well. Yay!

Great video as always, and I love hearing that the 997 will go up eventually. I’ve just bought a 2005 997 3.6 C4, absolutely love it. Mine has Mild Bore scoring and more than 170000 km’s, I knew this before I purchased the vehicle. All articles I have read on Bore Scoring show the horror stories but never explain the driving conditions to which these failures occurred. It doesn’t make sense that some natural wearing of the lining on the cylinder walls can lead to a catastrophic failure of an engine under normal driving conditions. The Porsche 997 drivers manual states that subjecting the 997 to hard cornering under track conditions affects the distribution of oil around the engine...hence they would not cover any damage under warranty, so it’s highly possible most of these failures occurred on the track, or due to abuse such as driving the car hard when not up to temperature, especially in colder climates such as North America and Canada or in Europe. Hope this helps for those who are considering buying a 997.

I bought an 06 Carrera Cabriolet from the 2nd owner in 2019 (full dealer records, 6 speed, & 96k miles) for $18,500. It was a daily driver that wasn’t owned by an enthusiast so door dings & mildly worn interior - but mechanically in great shape. It’s been 18 mos of glorious ownership & the car has been utterly reliable. This is my first Porsche & has converted me to Pcars. The deals are out there, you just gotta be diligent & jump on good examples that are priced right.

I'm the very happy original owner of a 2006 Carrera 4 (3.6 manual) with over 110,000 miles on it. I agree with most of what you say and it was interesting to hear you say that the 3.8 has a higher IMS failure rate than the 3.6. However, I am not sure whether that LN engineering kit can be installed for $2,500. Pretty sure the 2006 3.6 has to be completely disassembled to install the LN bearing.

The review didn’t fully discuss the major issue with the 997.1 which isn’t IMS but more related to bore scoring which has no engineering fix. It’s related to poor thermal engine management. Also what about the horrendous in car entertainment system and brushes over the tiptronic gearbox rather the vastly superior pdk of the 997.2 later models. The 997.2 fixes all of the engineering issues of the 997.1 and enhances them with even better looks, a vastly improved ICE system, bullet proof engine and superior pdk gearbox.

Major issue???🤣🤣... 5% of all cars... Wow... Major... From 2006, the M97 engines were fitted with bigger IMS bearing the IMS issue is almost unheard-of (not like the M96 earlier engine) and you can reduce the risk of bore scoring by fitting a low temperature thermostat too...

Nothing wrong with having some fun with a wrap. :) I have a 997.1 GT3 RS, and 997.1 C2S. And while the RS is super special, the C2S is a blast in it’s own way. Frankly I was surprised how much I enjoyed the C2S. It came with some mods, so it’s a bit more frisky than stock, and also less well planted than the RS-which is probably why it’s fun.

The only reason bore scoring is an issue is because Porsche "set" the oil change intervals at 2 years/20k miles. Which is ridiculous. If you change your oil every 5k or at least once a year (whichever is first) you will not have a problem.

Where are you getting these facts from..? M97 has a lower IMS failure rate because of the larger, stronger (but non-serviceable) single-row bearing. 997 C2 manual curb weight is 3075lbs, not 3200. It makes 321hp at the crank.. with 15% drivetrain loss, that's 273 at the wheels. Even with Porsche's conservative ratings, that's far from "over 300." I guess I shouldn't expect much from someone with plastidipped stock wheels

Not sure where you got that 10% engine failure rate from? For the IMS it's less than 1% IIRC, with pretty much zero of the larger updated IMS 2006 onwards. Bore score is far more common. Regardless, I agree that the 997 is awesome, having had mine for nearly 2 years and just ticked over 20k miles in that time. For less than $30k and a 911, the Boxster S in 986 or 987 is better for balance, serviceability, and cargo capacity. You can easily and one pensively tune it to the HP of a Carrera 911 and still be under the price of a Carrera 911. The 3.2 is less prone to bore scoring than the 3.4.

Iv now had 2 Porsche 911 turbos, an '85 slant nose Turbo & Now craziest looking 996 Turbo..Besides the headlites that they finally made awesome lites for June of this year, I really havent found ANYTHING I dont like abt 996 Turbo? The '85 even aft I had the car modified still kinda Sucked, Bad Lag, Ect BUT Not This 996 Turbo, Absolutely Incredible Car! Best part abt these cars is you can modify them & Not Just Throw Ur Money Away, Ull get alot of items back when you sell IF YOU SELL! I just cant sell my Turbo bc like in the past when I was sorry I got rid of my car & Now Its Gone, I dont want to have that feeling again..I havent driven a non-turbo But far as these turbos go, mod them Alittle & cars fast fast..The only thing I wish I had was a PDK instead of 6zpd🎸

I just got a 2010 Porsche Carrera 6MT for 48k. Well maintained and clean carfax. Is this good price? Love the car so far. 7 previous owners and records show they maintained at the dealer. Last owner had traded it in to get a Range Rover. Just liked and subscribed.

AWESOME VIDEO BRO!!! You are absolutely correct! I own a 2012 Ferrari California, 2016 Porsche Cayenne and a 2007 997 Carrera S and BY FAR my FAVORITE and my daily driver is my Meteor Gray 2007 997 Carrera S. It is one of the greatest 911s ever made. (I had a 964 before) :)

Which is faster the California or the 997? I would love to have a California in white, preferably with paddle shifters, assuming that’s an option.
@tonysuzer9569

@FepXBL The California is faster because it has the Dual Clutch Transmission, but the driving experience is much more raw and connected in the 997 S. My California is in Tour de France Blue, but I have seen gorgeous white ones as well. Again, make no mistake, my 997 Carrera S is by far my favorite daily driver and excitement. :)

Tony Suzer There’s not much else that stirs up driving passion like a 911. I’m struggling to decide whether to trade up from my 07 targa 4 to a 991, a 997 gts(preferably targa) or just keeping it.

Well I'm watching this video and its 2022 and I have a 07 Carrera 911 Cabriolet 4... it only has 22 thousand miles on it and a beautifully impressive burgundy color with tan interior like the one you have, I paid close to 50,000. Tough times to buy a used vehicle but when you know what you're looking for and you know the value of things, that's when you could possibly find something worth owning for a long time.... right now if I took this car and tried to sell it 3 States south of me I could probably make a clear $5,000

Bore scoring and rear main seal are an issue, along with voltage drop from battery (at the front) to starter at the rear. Bore scoring is easy to detect (watch the super detailed flat 6 innovations video) and again, only a small percentage of cars are affected. But IMS is a minor issue with the M97 as 99% of them have the larger sealed bearing, for which the failure rate is much lower than 10%. I have a 997.1 C4S and 991.2 GT3, both manual. And I can attest, the 997 is the last classic 911, and an absolute bargain!! Yes, the GT3 is on another level, but that performance just can’t be used on the street if you want to stay out of jail. Yes, the GT3 looks better, but I’m sorry, the last true 911 was the 997. The GT3 is a thoroughly modern car, made to look a bit like a 911. Try to get a 997 with the X51 (a poor mans “built motor”) and ceramic brake options, and it’s a seriously capable car. Bang for the buck, the 997 can not be beat. Get one before the prices go crazy and everyone suddenly wants one...

I don't think the IMS bearing failure is 10% that seems very high. And although the PDK in the 997.2 is easier to find, the first gen of that transmission wasn't great, much better than the tiptronic. But they didn't get it really right until the 981 gen.

I want a 997.1 but I’m worried about the IMS. 2005 is serviceable but 2006-2008 isn’t. I know it’s blown out of proportion but ya never know. Id rather just have it replaced. But if you can convince me otherwise, I’m all ears.

Heads up, 05 cars need the IMS but the 06-08's are not IMS serviceable unless you open the engine ... Porsche did DOUBLE the IMS size for 06-08 (and they do not fall) ... cars PLUS, the 3.8 is a MUCH MUCH interesting proposition than the 3.6. And you do feel the difference. Why stating such great facts but also neglecting the main difference ? You get better brakes and everything. And Automatics are not the way to go on 911's .. specially 997's ...

Brad! you need to go more into details when you talk about 2006 IMS bearing. it's not the same as 1999 to 2005. You are making it sound like they are all the same and that's not the case at all. 2006 to 2008 is not even serviceable unless you split the case. I spoke to a Porsche mechanic that's been working on these babies for over 20 years and he has only replaced 2 bearings on 2006. both times the car was tracked on a steady basis. like your channel btw
