We can have termites here in the upper midwest however I don't hear of that very often. Really well explained Jeff! I appreciate the way you helped us midwesterners. I work for Airbus in Germany and a few years ago the company sent me from Germany to work at their factory in Alabama. My employer offered me a permanent move to Mobile, but I ended up coming home after a year and a half because the weather and all kinds of bugs more than made up for the low cost of living, great food, and gorgeous beaches. Although Alabama is a beautiful state, it was the weather and pesky insects that decided I would come home. Of course, we all have different preferences and demands, and if someone doesn't mind the humidity and insects that much, they will definitely enjoy Alabama. I will definitely go back to Alabama, but only for vacation. Greetings from Europe.

Martin, thank you so much for the comment. Yes, the humidity and insects can definitely be frustrating for many people. The beaches are great, but it comes with humidity.

Hello. I am thinking about moving to Mobile to work at JM Family. I have 2 boys 8 and 10 and I am wondering where are the good school systems are and what areas should i be looking in to live.

I just helped another client who worked with that company as well. It really just depends regarding the school system. There are lots of opinions, online, and some websites offer very detailed ratings. My wife has been a schoolteacher for over 25 years in the public school system, so we are supporters. So if I understand correctly, you have to add hurricane coverage to your homeowners insurance? I'm going to guess homeowners insurance is crazy expensive there. Do you know how much it would be on a $250k house? I know there are many variables but I'd hate to move there and have sticker shock over insurance costs. Also if a house is in a flood plain does it have to be disclosed?

On a 250K house, my best estimate for homeowners insurance that includes hurricane insurance, it would be in the $2500 per year range. Also, the vast majority of homes I sell are not in a floodplain, but your lender would know about this prior to moving forward, as your homeowner's policy has to be in place before closing.
