As usual another great video! I started shooting handguns back in 1975, and the first 10 years nothing but revolvers. Once I started shooting semi autos, the revolvers stayed in the safe for years. Now that I'm retired, I have gotten back into revolvers big time. I don't play golf, so shooting handguns is sort of my golf. I don't look at all handguns as everything needs to be something I could carry, or for home defense. Revolvers are just plain fun to shoot, love the steel, and the looks. There is just something relaxing about slowing loading a cylinder, as opposed to trying to quickly load a magazine. The pride of ownership is off the wall, love to just sit around to admire and fondle them.

Revolvers have other advantages too. Remember a few years ago, we had the major ammo shortage. If you could find it, it was priced crazy. Even 22lr ammo wasn't spared from the crisis. There was an exception around here. A few of the gun stores had 22 short ammo. It was even reasonably priced. I have a revolver chambered in 22 long rifle. It can also shoot 22 shorts. My revolver actually shoots very well with shorts. I also have a 22 semi auto. The 22 short ammo was not going to help me with that. Revolvers are more versatile when it comes to ammo. That can be a big advantage.

yeah... been shooting handguns for about the same length of time. also about that time I took up handloading to better afford all the shooting I was doing especially with 44 mag where we go different ways is that I shot almost nothing but revolvers until a few decades ago when I got into 1911's (the old days they were not as accurate as todays) Guys with 'special grip' for semi autos get in trouble shooting a revolver with the BC gap. I use the same grip on all handguns. My DA revolvers all get federal primers. For fun factor I have gotten back into single action revolvers... slow to load and slow to unload Relaxing... zen... Also black powder muzzle loading revolvers and making paper cartridges for em. I shoot outdoors at various distances from 20-100 yards Have an old model 10 that was converted to PPC in the 70's... bull barrel etc. My girlfriend once (standing) hit a one gallon jug 4 out of 6 at 100 yards with it.... maybe 5 out of six... was kinda hard to tell.

@@doranmaxwell1755 Yes, all my friends back in the 1970's got into handloading, for the same reasons you mention. I always shot factory loads thinking they were cleaner to shoot. I was very fussy about keeping my guns spotless, but not quite as fussy today, as I'm lazier. I even shoot range reloads, were before I wouldn't!

@@gracedagostino5231 yeah you can clean guns to death tho. I was crazy spotless back in the day but now maybe clean every other session. I do wipe em down often when handled. One thing is that all or most all of my handloads are now cast and coated with HT... no leading and really very little fowling. The other is my version of Ed's red... with lanolin (the real stuff) I have a rag spritzed with the stuff on top of my safe. the old Ed's red really is the best gun cleaner and preservative there is IMO everyone who tries it loves it... meaning.... I make a gallon and end up giving half away. It is also a great penetrating oil I have some exotic grips and it does not harm anything so far. it will cut carbon better than anything I have tried. and.... it is pretty cheap to make. since it is cheap.. when I do clean I am not stingy. the guns parts are dripping while I am cleaning something else. I can brush em with an old toothbrush and then wipe clean with a progressively cleaner rag. The guns actually take on a nice sheen. and they are smoother. Automatic transmission fluid is one ingredient. It has some great lube and preservative qualities. It will also free up rusted tools very quickly... my son says it will fix anything LOL

What a lot of people don’t realize is how much performance you’re losing through the gap. I have a Coonan 1911 in 357 Mag and a Smith and Wesson 686 Plus in 6 inch. Firing the same ammo from the 686 and I was consistently getting almost 90 fps less than I do with the Coonan even though the Coonan has a shorter barrel.

That makes a lot of sense. I would imagine it would result in more velocity loss than compensators, due to the posterior positioning of the escaped gases. Thank you for commenting.

Don’t let the small amount of performance you’re losing worry you. I was forced into three shootings w/my issued revolver during my 30 year career and I’m still around to enjoy our grandkids. Unless you’re a cop the chances of having to use a handgun in defense of your life is pretty small so carry in confidence and practice regularly.

Thought I had lost my mind with all of your 'left handed' revolvers. lol Just need to watch he video in a mirror. My old smiths all have recessed cylinders also. For me, I have carried auto loading pistols for decades, but only shot them minimally to keep in practice. Revolvers were and are my absolute favorite handguns to shoot. In fact, single action revolvers are even better. Our bedside table gun will always be a revolver, and hunting/hiking sidearm also. Auto loaders have their place in Law enforcement and military, and hi-capacity carrying, but the best pistols to shoot by far are revolvers. And they are much more versatile with ammo and loadings, can take hi-power, and low power loads, lead, etc. In my book, auto loaders are utilitarian, while revolvers are works of art. I learned to shoot with revolvers, and I hold my auto loaders the same way. I do not put my off hand thumb all the way down the slide like I see people do. For one thing, you would have to shoot one handed holding it differently, and if you do not practice that also you could be in trouble if you need to. I don't call myself and expert, but can shoot comparably with most experienced shooters.
@nathanlambshead4778

I have to add though, that a really tight cylinder gap is NOT conducive to great reliability. Just a little grit or carbon can stop the cylinder from turning. For target and range stuff they are great though.

That is a really interesting point. I guess since I don't regularly hear about people losing fingers or thumbs to firing revolvers, some chamber gap may not be too worrisome...but apparently it does happen, so shooters should be cognizant of the dangers of poor hand placement. I am on the other end of the spectrum from you. Although my first gun was a revolver, I embraced semi-autos quickly and never looked back...until recently. I am really gaining an appreciation of what revolvers bring to the fight, and I totally agree with you, they are works of art.

@@DrTac I don't know anyone who lost a finger shooting a wheelgun, but a friend of mine did burn the side of his index finger shooting some hot 44 mags one time. Either way, I hold any pistol the same, with my off hand back from the workings of the pistol. Anyone shooting a revolver should do this for sure. The thing about a really good revolver, their triggers are the best, and the recoil is more of a natural roll back, rather than a 'rat trap' going off in your hands. Comes down to what you get used to, as always.

@@DrTac I only use 38 in them. The Kimber is definitely more comfortable to shoot, has the extra round and you can stage it easily flipping to the next round which allows a more single action feel. I do appreciate the 5oz reduction in weigh of the S&W 340 pd when you know it's hot out or just want a quick grab and go pocket carry. I do tend to wear them most in a running neoprene waist belt under my t-shirt in the summer. It's not the quickest access, but running around the neighborhood with my kids gives me peace of mind that it's not going to show and cause an issue. For the most part, I think the revolver shooter is pretty safe in most circumstances, but with ingenuity,some unexpected risks may be attached…eg the Chiappa Rhino. My Rhino 30DS absolutely delivers less muzzle flip, as advertised, but this is the direct result of aligning the barrel with the lowest chamber in the cylinder, which is considerably closer to the forward thumb gripping position 😱. The good news is my cuticles have never looked better😎

I had that Ruger LCR in .357 as my second revolver. My index finger wasn't strong and smooth yet, so I decided to use my middle finger to pull the trigger and extend my index finger straight directly over the cylinder gap 🤦‍♂️ I shot several boxes of .38 special this way and a box or two of .357, which were warm, but I never had burns or blisters 🤷‍♂️. This is not what most people report, but I can't help but think they're being a little over dramatic. I changed my grip over time because griping a snub nose revolver that high is bad for recoil control. Lower is better.
@DrTac
@DrTac 3 ай бұрын
So let's face it...revolvers have been around since 1831 and over the last couple of centuries if fingers were being blown off routinely, we'd all know about it. However, new designs, like the Chiappa Rhino, which places the barrel in line with the lower cylinder, closer to the finger/thumb position, significantly increases the risk. Regarding your finger choice, that addresses the posterior gap between the cylinder and the firing pin, but the potential danger is further anterior, the gap between the cylinder and the forcing cone, where forward-positioned thumbs tend to hang out. As far as recoil control, I have always found that the higher you can grip (to decrease the height of the bore), the more you can mitigate the recoil.
@benjaminstoute
@benjaminstoute 3 ай бұрын
@DrTac No, it was the front gap by the forcing cone. I'll make a response video for proof. I know this claim seems a bit outlandish. I think you're right about the rhino, though, because I would notice if my finger would drift up next to the cone. Thanks for the content! 👍
