I just finished doing this engine swap on my 1971 Ariens and was amazed how everything lined up perfectly to the old Tecumseh engine. The only difference I had to do from following these excellent instructions, was that I had to feed the new engine mounting bolts down from the top because of the limited space due to the transmission components. Many thanks from another Buffalonian.

I added the Hemi Predator to my 1980 MTD 5/24 that my father in law gave me about 15 years ago. I had to definitely do some fabrication. double pully hole diameter required a sleeve which I easily got on E-Bay. While I was doing this I also replaced all the bearings and bushings resealed the auger drive housing repainted the auger and housing. I put an hour meter on as well. Starts right up runs strong and kicks ass in the snow. Very happy with the motor and how this machine looks.

Haha lol you should be able to get an engine on that no problem. The only thing you’ll have to check is if it’s a single pulley or dual pulley. If it’s a two pulley engine then I would say you’re out of luck but if it’s a single shaft with one pulley you’re good to go!

@GarageGear

@@cuthbertkwan2594 there is but I think it only works for certain models. The shifting linkage on the back/bottom will need to be flipped. nice work, You need to add a piece of rubber to the inner impeller. It will keep it from clogging and helps with wet slushy snow. Lots of videos on here to see how its done. Top tip- you do not need to add the rubber to every blade of the impeller. If you have four just do two opposite each other if you have three you could even get away with one.

Awesome inspiration - thank you for posting this and for all your other videos. I just did this Predator swap on my 1973 Ariens 910008 (got it from my neighbor for $100 a few years ago). Just FYI I had to disassemble the transmission to get access to bolt the Predator. There are two "arms" held by some pins under the front bolt holes. Those must be removed or I couldn't access the existing holes (which match perfectly with the new engine!!!). I ended up putting the two "front" bolts from the top, with lock washers/nuts on the bottom. The two in the back were able to go 'up'. I replaced the friction disc while I was under there, greased and lubed everything. There are some good vids showing how to take this apart easily and it sort of "swings" up. The pulley cover bolt also does not fit the predator, but I'll pick one up to match the size (5/16). And I *think the tension/guides are good, but now that I know my way around this tank, I'm confident I can adjust/fix if needed. Oh and a tip to help relocate the gear for the chute... I used two hinge blanks stacked like these... www.amazon.com/Hinge-Blanks-Door-Hinges-Nickel/dp/B07L8NRP2K/ref=sr_1_13_sspa?crid=CXP3BHDG5D4K&keywords=hinge+plate&qid=1667319702&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjQzIiwicXNhIjoiNC4zNCIsInFzcCI6IjQuMTkifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=hinge+plat%2Caps%2C146&sr=8-13-spons&psc=1&smid=A1G5OS4TK6MMVH

At 11:53 you claim that the auger and impeller are running faster out of the box with the predator engine. But looking at the tecumseh on the left it seems that the impeller is moving much faster. I put a 212cc Predator hemi engine on an old 29" thrower and added paddles to the impellers. It NEVER clogs and throws snow clear across the street. So if if you have an annoying neighbor, you can easily clogg their driveway. Only issue is the carb gets too cold when it's snowing. It needs a heat shield from the muffler to the carb to keep it warm, otherwise it starts surging badly after a while of use.

So I mounted this engine, and it fit perfectly on my John Deere TRS27, the footprint and hole configuration is perfect. I was stoked since we're getting hit my a huge storm in the Northeast tomorrow. Pulleys went on the shaft nice and easy too. Unfortunately, the pulleys on the shaft do not line up with the auger and drive pulleys. Even though the shaft is the exact same measurement as the original, the actual face of the engine is about 2" further back than the the old one. 😮‍💨 I checked all the other measurements before buying, and it sure looked like a perfect match. I thought of drilling new closer mounting holes, but existing hardware on the blower wont allow that. Unless there's a way to extend the drive shaft 2", I guess it's going back to Harbor Freight, and out comes the shovels (and my back as well 😤.) This is not to discourage anyone from doing this, just check and double-check all possible measurements first!

If the fan is turning much faster that means the drive plate that its directly linked to is also turning much faster. With the wet stuff and ice I usually deal with my machine couldn't handle moving into it any faster, the fan blades are already bent as is it. I think the weak link of these ariens is the fan blades aren't supported underneath, I've seen 3 machines so far that have bent fan blades.

Really liked this video. Two questions. What was the reason you took the foam block out of the air cleaner? Is that because snow blower engines aren't run with air filters installed? Second, you had to modify the position of your chute crank. Is that typical with a modification like this? That would be the one thing that is outside of my skill set, although I'm sure I could find someone that could do it for me.
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill! I took the foam air filter out because moisture gets trapped in those, freezes, and blocks air flow. Best not to have one as most snowblowers don’t! Second, if you could find a small flat piece of metal like I did and drill some holes in it you should be fine. That should be all you’ll need. Perhaps you could also find a local welder to make one for you like I did. Or even pop a question out there on Facebook book to see if someone could help you out. Snowblower engines have a "stove" to heat the air going into the Carburetor. It captures muffler surface heat and/or engine block heat. There is shrouding not found on an all purpose engine. The engine must be able to reach and maintain its design temperature so that components expand/contract to specs. Removing the filter is fine. Engines have a power curve which typically peaks in the 2800 to 3200 rpm range. Unless you have a "need for speed" operating in this range is best.
@danclancy6535
@danclancy6535 2 жыл бұрын
Yes .. The Snow King motor have the "heat box " around the carb ,a must in the cold & snow dust conditions .Also the heat box works with the jetting & air intake so the motor does not "lean out " in the cold air that is why most Snow King's run the best in the colder weather , the colder the better .. anything over say 30 F they will not run the best because of them running richer. A proper dialed in Snow King is a very good motor , the key is you MUST check the oil EVERYTIME you use it ..period .. the oil sling in the crankcase is not the best design for low oil conditions in the crankcase you must maintain the correct level on the oil dip stick . If not .. you will throw the piston rod .. most of the time the rod goes through the block right behind the starter. The oil level is like the Ocean ... you cannot turn your back on it .. lol ! Keep a eye on the oil ! Otherwise nothing beats it in the cold & snow . That motor was made just for that ..just for a snowblower. You do not want anytype of airfilter system on a snowblower. If you follow the proper procedure starting a Snow King they too will start on the first pull everytime.

Why snowblower engines need warm air to the carburetor. The colder the air the denser the air which gives you a lean mixture. This can cause too high temperatures on the piston. You need the evaporation of the fuel to help keep the top of the piston from burning through. You need a specific ratio by weight of air to fuel for proper combustion. Air temperature can affect that as well as elevation. Power decreases by 3.5% for each 1000 ft of elevation requiring jet changes in the carb. Cold air also affects fuel atomization. The fuel must be turned into small droplets by the carb for proper combustion and timing. In cold air the droplets get too big causing delayed combustion and reduced power. In extreme cases it can wash the cylinder walls of oil. In some carbs you can get icing in the venturi where velocity of the air is increased and pressure is reduced. The lower pressure cases the water vapor in the air to freeze at a higher temperature. To give the proper fuel air mixture the size of the carb opening which determines the air mass is matched with a small hole "jet" where the fuel is mixed with the air. To adjust for air temperature and altitude you can change the jet size to obtain the proper air/fuel mixture.

Its a mid 80's craftsman (Noma/Murray) blower with a 27 inch cut. It was gray but I sandblasted it and painted it black. The 8hp only had trouble in very deep snow or wet snow, with the 11hp it can blow deep snow fast and it never runs out of power. I can still get parts for it easily.

Genuinely curious: why no air filter???? It would have zero downside as far as I can see.

Hey Delta, an air filter in the cold winter could collect moisture and freeze. And on a small scale this it could harm your small engine choking it of air. Many pros recommend taking it out. Thanks for watching!

Also makes it easier to add a shot of starting fluid when there's no air filter in the way.

Would a predator engine fit on an MTD 22inch snow thrower? The original engine on this snow thrower was a tecumseh 5hp engine.

If it’s got two pulleys then it won’t. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for checking out the channel. I did think about that but there were too many variables. This one was direct fit.

I just bought one after this video for $50 with a predator on it there is a differential on one of the wheels looks like you were only rolling in one wheel drive

Yep I know. She’s tough to turn when the differential is locked. I’ll lock it when the snow is really bad. $50 hell of a deal. Thanks for watching!
