What size hole did you drill for the bottle cap? Love your videos, I watch them go out and try to replicate. Thank you

Dumb question: what is the purpose hitting the anvil with the hammer after striking the metal you are working with? I notice it seems like you have a cadence 3 hits of metal 2 hits to the anvil.

Hey Thomas, It’s actually a really good question! There are several ways to approach hammer swinging and forging techniques. I’ve tried many and my style is a meld of several others which works best for me. The tapping actually has several benefits that work well for me. First off, and you mentioned it! The cadence or rhythm. My hammer blows are always more effective and accurate when going from a moving position Vs. stagnant/idle then going to hit something. It’s kind of like that person who can sink every shot on the basketball court but can can’t buy a free through??? SECOND. Those short few taps allow me to think out my next steps. Letting me know if I need to go further in the forging where I’m at or if I’m ready to move on to the next area of the piece. I don’t count the taps, rather just go to the next step once I’ve decided. Lastly this style allows me to adjust my grip and handle placement without stopping. I’m able to slide my hand further away from the hammer head for more forceful blows; or choke up on the hammer for lighter fine tuning and planishing blows. The lighter blows prepare you for the next step insuring everything is prepared for going straight to work at the next heat. Hope this was helpful! Thank you so much for the great question and following our journey!🙏 Benjamin Davies Maker’s Journey Workshop
