I graduated with an AS degree in 2005 for Computer Animation. I never got into this as my career and now almost 20 years later I'm wanting to get back into 3d modeling and so far this tutorial is just amazing. I spent 10s of thousands of dollars for my education and it is just insane how much information is available online for free. Thank you so much!

Information, and TOOLS. Teenage me constantly fell into the "Open Source" rabbit hole of constantly trying out new tools and software for various things just because they're free and community managed... Blender is a great example for modelling, I use GIMP for photo editing (as probably the best alternative to Photoshop, also free btw)... I've come to the point not only is the learning all free on KZbin, but the tools you're learning are also free! Look hard enough, and most common tools in the industry have free alternatives

Ha! I did my BA on Visual Communication Design and graduated in 2005. I had a 3D course where we learned basic Maya, but after graduating I focused more on graphic design and never continued with 3D. I was just thinking how amazing this tutorial is going and after seeing your comment, I decided to comment as well. Andrew, thanks for making it look simple and constantly reassuring us along the way. I've been wishing to get back into 3D for some time now, but as each year passed the first step felt even more daunting. Thanks to you, after 19 years, I was able to make that first step. Hopefully I keep going at it :)

I had bought a few online courses and they really show a lot (they explain pretty much every function) but this is the first time I've really enjoyed a tutorial. As mentioned in the previous part, you don't need to know everything. Praxis is almost more important, everything else comes with time. I can use the purchased courses perfectly as a supplement afterwards, but for learning and memorizing the basic functions, this tutorial is unbeatable! Thank you so much for your time and effort, you are just opening up the world of 3D editing to me. 🤗

@12:30 IMPORTANT TIP about the "Circle of Influence" that I learned the HARD way! If your proportional edit isn't moving JUST a part of the donut but the WHOLE donut, then like me, you've somehow scrolled the SIZE of your circle of influence to be SO big, that now you're moving you whole donut as if in Object mode. As a beginner I tried everything to figure WHY it was doing this. Finally, I decided that my best route to figure out what the problem was, was to begin anew with a new donut. Sure enough, I see the "Proportion Size (Smooth):" on the upper left and notced it was way smaller on this newer file. I was able to go back and fix my old bad donut file. Thank GOD. Hope that helps someone who messes up with the scroll wheel the way that I did.

For real, I’ve been trying these donut tutorials since the first one and I still can’t make it past Part 2…putting aside that there are parts of Part 1 that I have to skip because I can’t figure them out. In so many years of trying to learn the basics of this program I still don’t understand what any of the keys or features mean, I haven’t been able to memorize how to navigate around, and I still rely on File>New project as my Deselect button because there just doesn’t seem to be one. I feel like I’ve wasted years of my life and I hate myself for being this stupid. I don’t understand why people say this stuff is fun 😭

At 16:00 if you’re stuck on edge select you might be struggling with your preference setting from the previous video. What worked for me was disabling the “Emulate the 3 button mouse” in input preferences. Now followed the steps he said and the edge of the donut and all the edges in that row should be selected in that row.

Thank you for making this so easy. I avoided blender for years because it looked really complicated. I'm so happy I took the plunge because I'm really enjoying it! 🤩

I was in college back when Pixar was first touting its 3D stuff with Luxo Jr & Tin Toy. One of my friends was in Computer Science back then & was touting all the "3D artwork" he was able to do by entering what looked like a ton of numbers & code. I knew BASIC and some DOS, but I was also into drawing & painting -- all the work my friend was putting into 3D was really counterintuitive & "left-brain"ish, not the way the artists I knew worked at all. And everything since then just seemed to take 3D & computer art out of everyone's hands and keep it firmly in the hands of only those who could afford the fancy expensive software & machines. Realizing that we finally hit the point where we can put the intuitive hands-on work back into the hands of artists and not just coders is a huge relief. Making it available for EVERYONE to afford, instead of those with the $$$ is a huge high.

I wish you were around back in 2012-2013... Learned from your tutorials more than I did during my 4 years in college... I went to college, wasted 4 years of my life... so when I got my diploma and finished my education in 2017, I realised that skillwise I was ready for 2007-2009 gaming industry... so I went to some 6-15( 6am-3pm) job.. worked there and studied on my own until 2021 and thats when I actually got proper full time job... but because I lived in Netherlands(Holland) that made my job search even harder, now I moved to another country where I dont enjoy my life, but at least I work in the gaming industry...

Hey hope you found it. If you haven’t, delete the Torus and add a new one. The ‘Add Torus’ option will be there. (Or press F9) I found the ‘Add Torus’ option disappears once you deselect your Torus after adding it. He explains it in the video too.

Thank you man honestly I tried blender a couple times but I gave up and now I'm giving it another try. Honestly your videos are helping me so much and I can't stop watching them it's like learning new things in blender every day.

I would just like to say, this is the most helpful thing ever. I am really into animating, always have been - with simple lego figures and stop motion but ofc I've wanted to move on from that. I have had a go with Blender before but I haven't for the life of me figured it out. Just watching the first video, I've already got the controls and basics. Thank you.

Did this tutorial (well, v2 of this tutorial) three and a half years ago as I was getting into 3d. Now I've been in a big animation school for three years and I'm coming back to it to refamiliarize myself with Blender, since we use Maya. And wow, this is such a fun feeling, now knowing so much more about CG softwares. I feel like a shonen hero travelling to his home village between the 14th and the 15th arc to kick the asses of the bullies that have taken it over, it's great. Also, in felt that "So many ways to save in Zbrush, like wether you want to save a file, a tool or a project... I hate Zbrush!" in my heart of heart.
