I'd like to think I'm no longer a beginner, but I consistently learn new things by watching your beginner videos. I've never thought to restrict an axis while snapping to a vertex. That is so useful! Thanks!

I'll be real, I struggled a lot with this particular one, but I'm honestly grateful I did because even though this one is supposed to be a "step back" from the last one, I'm really happy you revisited a lot of the techniques in the earlier tutorials because I still have trouble wrapping my head around them. 3D modelling is proving to be extremely, extremely tough for me as a beginner, but I'm constantly learning and improving my understanding of topology with each of these tutorials! Thank you!!

Honestly, I HAVE LEARNED A LOT, even from just creating random things like in the tutorial. I have been following the series since last week, and there are small/minor things that I never knew were possible to do that has a big impact in modelling. My goal is to create game assets, especially weapons, and this series is giving me the basics without leaving me confused. I have tried other beginner series, but this one's my favourite!

The last one was easy for me because of the homework you gave us in part 9. I've made cut in bishop the same way. It took me some time to figure out (without any hints), but this was definitely worth it to spend time on that task. Many thanks to you.

At 15:00 for the extrusion in the back, I used a slightly different method. I deleted the end face then extruded the top ones down, deleted the new extra un-needed face. Scaled in the Z to 0 then added some new control edges along the sides.

14:50 you can add proximity loops externally and use Extrude Manifold on the inside, then align them on Z axis, move down, and merge the sides of proximity loops with the falloff. Quite neat.

I just learned a really useful trick that replicates the manifold extrusion or what Grant here did with the second exercise. What you do is put snap on vertex. Then enable auto merge under the options at the workplace settings tab (wrench icon on the right). Then just extrude onto the place you want. Just remember to delete the faces inside the mesh afterwards! I find it easiest to just selectively hide some faces to "get to" the faces hiding in the mesh.

quick note about using bevel instead of inset: if you set the bevel profile to 1, the angle itself will stay at 90° while adding new supporting loops around it.

Nice tutorial. So important to understand how various topologies influence the final outcome of a model. One thing I think would be useful in these vids is to start to consider the final intent or use of models with respect to how they're made - is it for use within Blender or export to a game engine etc. Do techniques like mean crease export to other platforms etc? Maybe a topic for a future video.

I have a question, I'm trying do the exercises in blender 3.0 and in 8:20 you deleted the faces and extrude some edges to create the model, but now in version 3.0 of blender we have a tool called "extrude manifold" which will help us in these situations, is that right?

Had some strange issue with smoothing in current version blender. it looked like blender doesn't always recalcs smoothing: there were times when I had autosmooth one, then I removed its modifier, chose flat smooth, chose auto smooth again, and shading changed(I slid verticies around). Also I had strange pinching at "igloo's" rear. It went away when I extruded plane a little back, so subd had a place to scatter vertices around or something.

Hi Grant, I wondered when you export a model (for example in FBX) is the "edge crease" data something that gets exported as well and usually well understood in other 3d software/engine? Or does it need to be baked in some ways into a resulting "standard" mesh before export, and how?
@grabbitt

It would have to bake it so it's not efficient for games

hi grant, really enjoying this series. Just one thing, when you say quads, do you mean shapes that are obviously 4 sided or all shapes that are 4 sided. i.e. is it ok to have a triangle that has a cheeky 4th vertex in there or does it need to look like a square or trapezium

I have to admit that this was a tough one. The main "problem" I'm having with these tutorials is that there's more than one way to do it. If I do it differently than you and get a similar result I have to frequently come back and copy your work for the next shape since the topology doesn't align. Then there's the "why couldn't I think of that?" mindset that can sometimes become a drag... That being said, the exercises are helpful and you get to learn something with each step. The second to last one was the toughest, but doing it gave me the tools to finish the last one without getting stuck and watching the solution, so your teaching methods must be working! what's the point of proximity loops? they have the same purpose as mean crease but they also add unnecessary geometry, no? so unless you want that extra geometry, it's better to use mean crease. or am I missing something?

Hey, Grant, thanks for the cool excercises. Inset before extruding was the most helpful. But I have something mixed up in my head about creases. I used to use them all the time, but now I switched to proximity loops because I heard that either creases don't export well to other 3d programs or are not accepted on sites where you can sell your models. Is this correct?
@grabbitt
@grabbitt 4 жыл бұрын
i dont fully know but i would not use them for that reason

@@grabbitt I did a bit of research and found out that creases don't export to other 3d modelling programs such as 3dsmax and maya when exporting in FBX and Alembic. I still don't know if it's a big deal. I also noticed that you don't use a shortcut for creasing which is Shift+E. Hope that helps.

I really like your videos and think this format/series is particularly helpful. Thank you very much for your hard work. Just an FYI: The pinching/topology issues aren't really a support loop or creasing issue. The problem is that your topology doesn't really establish the curvature that you want in your final result. You need more geometry to define your curvature but you'll can get a cleaner result. The following video shows something that might not be quite the same but it's a similar concept: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYqTfYaOdtZ_kJI Also you're not marking "a mean crease" (I know this is a bit nit-picky). After all the creases aren't being rude to us ;) You're creasing the edges but the field in the property-panel displays and changes the mean (i.e. the average) crease value of the selected edges.

I get that you save on polygons, but it seems to me like the crease method is absolutely useless in production environment. Sure, if you want to stay in Blender and render there, creasing works great, but when you need to bake you high poly for example, or export it to a different programme, creases get you nowhere, right? Thanks again for these series, so great to just polish up my skills.
