In southern part of India, we call these tunes as SA RI GA MA PA DA NI SA, n reverse SA NI DA PA MA GA RI SA. It's known as Carnatic music which has centuries old tradition. These are notes the you played on G and D strings. Amazing how music is connected across the world. Your channel is very helpful for mandolin learners

Is there an instrument kind of like a mandolin that has the same range? I would love to get good enough to play along with my favorite Khamaal Hasaan movies.

Baren, I am learning so much so quickly Its like I feel like halfway through the lesson I felt like I was never going to get it but you're so mellow & the construction of your teaching so progressively comprehensible that by the end of the lesson I've got it down & now I'm being somewhat innovative with what I've learned I'm playing more by feel Gosh, I love this instrument Thank you, brother

A really valuable lesson here - I'm a Complete Beginner to Strings having learned to play an old foot bellows organ by ear and heart. (Yes!, I've moved forward since those days!!). I've great appreciation therefore for listening to the tone and ring of strings and feel this so important for everyone who plays an instrument. Thank you for all your work to help others.

Best videos of the mandolin yet. The problem with some is they don't take into consideration the size of the neck plus strings so close together. The angles if some are very confusing if you don't know the name of the chords. However your videos show posture and physical technique.

What do you do if your fingers are too short to reach the frets? I'm having a hard time with reach and I have arthritis and neuropathy so I'm using learning to play as therapy for my hands & mind. I honestly can't thank you enough for these amazing lessons!! I am afraid that the bridge on my mandolin is a little high so I need to take it into a shop to have it looked at. It's a lot higher than the action on my electric guitar (Which i never learned totally either because of my hands).
@richellmcknight4464 жыл бұрын
When you are running the scales, use your fingers all in a row, one per fret, it's a lot easier. He's showing the G scale using index, middle, ring ,--- try using index, ring, pinkie( on the G and D strings- index, middle, pinkie on the A and E strings)- on the G&D you are skipping the fret your middle finger would naturally be on, so don't use that finger. Once you place your index finger, each finger will play each fret in order, I hope that makes sense- guys forget us girls have shorter fingers, lol, but I play piano , guitar, and cello, and finger position is a big thing, no matter what instrument you're playing! Also, if you want to fix your pain, numbness, and hand issues, go low carb, grain/ sugar free, and you will have AMAZING results! I did Whole 30( with no fruit), 2 years ago, to fix my high blood sugar( I refused meds), and in the FIRST WEEK my fasting sugar dropped from 125 to 80! Day 5, I woke up with no pain! By 2 wks in, the numbness in my hands was almost GONE! I decided to stay grain/ sugar free, and learned about low carb, and how damaging high insulin levels are! I was told by 3 docs that I had carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, and probably arthritis, when all I had was a HUGE amount of inflammation due to high sugar and insulin levels! I rotate now between low carb, keto, and carnivore, I've lost 100 lbs, feel better than I have in 20 years, got off all my meds, blood sugar is normal, and no pain or numbness in my hands unless I screw up and overeat sugar or carb food! Please try it, it sure saved my life and made it worth living! Go listen to Dr Ken Berry, Dr Eric Berg, Dr Jason Fung, and the many other low carb, keto people on you tube, it will change your life!😘😁💖

1:58 I am confused. Is there a lesson I missed regarding HOW to actually play scales - what our fingers are supposed to look like - shape-wise, etc.? Do we KEEP our previous finger on the last fret along with the new finger, or just move the next finger in sequence along, to REPLACE the previous one? Are we going strictly along the G string - or is this like the pentatonic scale exercises which I was given when I took guitar lessons, in which we have to go up and down various strings in a shape - like 1 3 4, etc.?

Mary, I am sure you have your mandolin by now, but for others, I want to say that my experience with Elderly Instruments was very positive. While I too prefer to shop local, most guitar shops have few if any mandolins. I think that Baron gives good advice. for a starter set up.

I don't know u would read this or someone would notice this I have some problems In my mandolin, On G string,where 3rd finger on 5th fret, doesn't make any sound like my ear kinda know it's a wrg note. So I tried going to 6th fret,that does kinda sound right to me. My mandolin is from my grandpa.he made it himself. So I don't know what to do now. I hope someone notice this fast :((
