I love your story! I didn't grow up with motorcycles either. I took the HD class when I was 55! It was the craziest thing I had ever done. It was scary and exhilarating. I had spinal issues a couple of years ago and sold my bike. I was so sad every time I saw a motorcycle thinking I wouldn't ride again. Then I had surgery and guess what ...I bought me another bike. Her name is Anastasia B. (name from Will and Grace). She's a 2014 HD Sportster Superlow 1200T. I don't go far but I don't care. Riding gives me a feeling nothing else can. (Btw...I'm now 71 and a great grandmother)

Great story. I'm 55 too and started classes few months ago. I was scared and it took me a while to get used to the bike but I persisted because I want it so badly. In the Netherlands we have to pass 3 exams before we are allowed on the streets. We are not allowed to practice by ourselves on a parking lot without a license. So I attend one 1-hour class per week, which is a bit frustrating because it's only 1 hour and it's reasonably expensive. I think if I could practice every day my confidence would grow much faster. But at least I am growing steadily and dream of riding the streets and the highway one day. Your videos help a lot, last time I had my class I was almost about to give up. I had to remind myself that learning processes are not straight lines, sometimes it feels like taking a step back instead of forward. But I won't give up! Thanks for your wonderful and inspiring videos!

I started 14 years ago...., when I was 58. i rode nearly fifty feet before I cracked two ribs and broke two bones in my ankle. I spent all winter looking at the bike in my garage and thinking "You AREN'T going to beat me." Since, I've ridden to Alaska, Newfoundland (twice) and all over the US. Best thing ever. I had a stroke at age 71 and fractured my skull last year. I thought seriously about giving it up... but just yesterday in 72 degrees I rode nearly 100 miles. My wife told me I need to get a new jacket as my high Viz jacket has faded. That was my "go" sign. So now, I'm looking forward to next year and more riding. My Super Tenere is name "Tennie".

Great post young lady. Shadetree got me interested while I lived in Tampa. 56 when I got my license four years ago. I’ve moved back to Tulsa a year ago. The memories already made make me smile just thinking about them. Even made me a Daytona bike run to catch a Jackyl concert! I truly enjoy your channel & informing people about the joys of riding. I am 47 years old. Never used a clutch before. Bought a Honda Rebel 300, took an MSF course, got my endorsement. It was rocky. Hubbie has been very helpful. Still scary. Appreciate you as a person and your videos. Becoming less scared. I have found joy in riding. Where I haven’t had experienced it before. My bike is named Jessika Rabbit. 58 years old just last Sunday, riding a 2023 Spyder RT Limited that is named F4NTOM CRUISER! I'm F4NTOM! Just getting started riding - got the Spyder in May here in Texas, but we had a brutal summer that kept me off it for a few months. I took my first moto cert class in 2011 and it was terrible to the point where I left mid-class due to the rudeness of the instructor. Like you, I was gonna give up but I found a better instructor and (barely) passed the test! Never bought a motorcycle, but looked into the Spyders a few years back.

Take it from an old guy with thousands of mile under his belt. Jess is absolutely correct about every thing she said. I will add a few more helpful suggestions. If you are scared of riding in traffic but would still like to ride a motorcycle here are some KZbin sites to give you lots of information to help you over come your fear. MCrider is one Dan Dan the Fire Man is scary to watch but gives some excellent ways to avoid all those scary crashes that he shows on his channel. Jerry Paladino is another good one to watch as well as Moto Jitsu. All of these fellows have books and videos and apps that you can buy with lots of exercises to practice in a parking lot. Two of them is a Motorcycle instructor and Dan is a EMT and Jerry is a retired motorcycle policemen. As for smaller bikes all the Japanese co. have lots of motorcycles that are under 300 cc or less that means less than 20 horse power and less than 300 lbs. There are lots of them out there used that you can buy for 2 to 3 thousand dollars to start out on and you might be able to sell them later for the same price as you paid for them. So I hope this is helpful to some of you wanting to learn to ride. Watch this video again and listen to Jesses suggestions. She knows what she is talking about.

Love this! Here's my story. I got a bonus at work and bought a beautiful Red Yamaha V-Star 250. I failed my MSF course and thought I'd made the biggest mistake of my life spending $4,000+ on a motorcycle (more than my bonus). I too cried for hours after failing. I signed up for an additional MSF class as late in the season as possible, to give myself as much time to practice. I practiced friction zone, starting and stopping, right and left turn from stop in my oval driveway. In addition, on a bicycle, I practiced balance, counter steering, and leaning (MSF course's recommendation for me). I passed the 2nd MSF class and rode a few weeks until winter. Even though I winterized it, by spring my pilot jet had gotten clogged. I didn't know I needed to drain the float bowl since my motorcycle has no off setting on the petcock. I didnt know my pilot jet was clogged, so I kept trying to ride with the lower part of my throttle's power missing, so I had to give it alot of throttle just to get it out of the driveway, which was very scary. Because of the fear, I stopped riding and the carburetor got even more clogged to the point were the motorcycle would begin to surge on idle, so I stopped riding completely. Fast forward to two years later. I took it apart and replaced the pilot jet and cleaned the carburetor. I gave her the best gas I could find and I finally named her. Lady Bug and I are back on the road and I'm not giving up this time.

Jess, I've told you this before, but your story is the sole reason I stuck with it back in 2020. While I passed my MSF (barely), I had bought a 2008 Harley Davidson Fat Bob (Jolene) as my first bike...and was terrified. I was on the verge of selling it, after it sat outside unridden for a couple of months, when I stumbled across your videos for the first time. Just so happened to be a video where you shared this story in a little more detail. That afternoon, I got on the bike, took it on a spin just around my neighborhood, and the rest is history. I recommend that people interested in riding take the BRC course before they buy a motorcycle. Many people are in love with the idea of riding. The actual riding scares them beyond being able to safely ride. Additionally, good riders are students and continually seek to learn more and increase their skills. Finally don’t let your friends that also don’t know how to ride tell you what you need to do. Great video Jess.

Jess I bought my first bike at 53 then took a riders course and actually went down during the course and when I went for my license I went down at the last part of the test ( the swerve) but I stuck with it and road a Sportster like Jorden for two years then moved up to a 2001 Road King you have and continue to inspire me in my motorcycle journey so thank you for all it that I wish you and Jordan all of the best

Great video! I just named my bike “Blackie” and will begin talking affectionately to her. This naming my bike is a great ‘mind hack’ and I’m sure it will improve my riding. I’m 71 years old, just passed my MSF course, and got my license. I bought a new Royal Enfield Bullet 350 with about 22 horsepower. As you say, starting out, there is no need for a huge, powerful machine.

I don’t remember when I got my first bike, maybe 15 yrs ago. It was a 500cc Vulcan, and I didn’t have an endorsement either 🤪. I have a Vulcan Custom now, and it doesn’t have a name. But I love your thoughts about making your bike your friend, giving it a name, seeing it as your partner on the road. That’s a great way to approach one’s new life on two wheels! Ride safe! Spot on as always. Just gotta keep getting back on. Same goes for laying your bike down. If you have a really scary experience on your bike make sure you get back on your bike the next day or as soon as you are healed up if injured. Even if it's just to putt around the neighborhood or a parking lot. It can be years if ever before you get back on if you don't. You have to remind yourself of the joy before the fear really takes hold. My experience was a near miss with a big dog in a curve at night.. It's the best advice I ever recieved when learning to ride. The grey beard told me "Get back on your bike or you'll never get on it again" followed by "The fear you gained is your best friend, because the moment you completely let go of that fear you'll start pushing the limits til they push back". He was spot on if I hadn't gotten back on the next day I may never have and eventually that fear turns to respect. The anxiety fades and turns into a relaxed awareness. Relaxed, in tune with your bike, and a subconscious hyper awareness of everything around you. Yes I said relaxed and hyper aware at the same time. It makes no sense but it's really what it's like once you're completely comfortable on your bike.

Hey Jess. The Old Man Here. The very first time I rode on the back of a motorcycle. It was with my dad. He bought a trail 90 kinda mustard yellow color. And there was no padding on the back where I sat. Next thing I know dad buys me a used Honda 50 automatic.no clutch. I had so much fun with that little bike. I was a very young boy at the time. My first street bike was a 1981 Honda CM400E. I bought it when I was Discharged from the Military. My next bike was a Honda 500 custom deluxe. I got hard up for money to pay my car insurance and sold my bike. But needed the car for my work as a delivery driver. I was 21 years old when I rode my first street bike. I had no fear of riding it. Felt very natural to me. Now I'm 61 years old. My health needs to be better. But I have been working on that. I sat on a Honda Shadow 250 trying to take a course to get my endorsement for motorcycle. I was terrified! I had become a big wussy. I was getting the feeling back just before I hit my endurance limit. It was extremely Hot that day. On blacktop wearing bluejeans and a jacket. Si I got dehydrated pretty fast. And the instructor sent me home and I got my money refunded. Like you I felt like a total loser for not being able to finish the class. And gave up my dream of ever riding a motorcycle again. And I would set my my living room window with it open. And hear all the bike's out. And I would hate myself even more. Then one day I got pissed and said to myself. I'm going to ride bike again even if it kills me! I could be free at least for a while. So this is where I am currently. My Jeep is giving me crap. But I'm keeping it till we get through winter. The I'm going to sale it and hopefully buy a decent used bike get my learner's permit. And get busy. Hope to see you out there next year maybe. I have nothing left to loose except my apartment. I'm going to make this happen. Stay Safe Everybody!

I subscribed because this young lady thinks similar to me. Overcoming things is where it’s at in life! In my 20’s I took the motorcycle safety class on Yokota AFB, Japan. I ordered a sportster and rode it all through my 20’s, then sold it and got married and made a family. At 56, I started riding again, to watch and supervise my 21 year old riding. I was terrified at first, then it all came back, and made me realize what I’ve been missing all these years. Now I’m not afraid of any bike whatsoever. When I’m on it, I’m the boss of it. Sadly, my misses is terrified to the point of paralysis about riding a bike, so I have to enjoy the hobby by myself.

I am SO HAPPY I clicked on this video! I am 58 years old and recently survived cancer and two brain surgeries. I bought my Grom the day before yesterday :-) Her name is Graziela. I love how many old ladies like me are getting into riding - It's something I've always wanted to do but whenever I mentioned it someone would tell me how foolish that was. So I just decided to do it the other day (without asking anyone else what they thought about it) and everyone at the HD shop was Suuuuuper nice. This is all fantastic advice for beginner riders. Most of this advice also applies to anyone trying to get over the mental trauma of getting back on a bike after a wreck. Rebuilding that relationship, that trust, that passion and desire for your motorcycle is key. Having someone to ride with you during that struggle also makes a world of difference. And Jess, as for your question, my ride a 2018 road glide also and her name is Maxxi. I just put 50,000 mi on her and by far the best motorcycle I've ever owned.

I just went through the Harley beginer class, I faied the first time taking the test. But the next week I took the test and past. I got my license this past August. Im 57 years old. You hit it on the head when you talked about being easier to learn when your younger. You don't have the fear when you're younger. I have a 2014 Breakout, and i love it!! Have'nt named it yet. I committed to getting my permit (the knowledge portion) before my MSF so I gave myself no excuse to not get on the road after class. Yes, passing the MSF does cover my state's exam requirements, it doesn't cover the knowledge portion which I am sure with test anxiety, I would have failed. I had my friend ride my bike to MSF for me and after the first day, I actually rode my new bike home with no previous experience. I knew the roads, I knew what to expect and it was time to do it. I drove my car to MSF the next day. (grin)

You are onto something here. The best $400 i ever spent was on the HD motorcycle course. I've ridden on and off since about 12 (1st bike was a 1976 Suzuki 185GT with knobbies and front fender removed). The best rider in my class had never ridden before the class. The problem with early riders is the bad habits that get developed. I'm 39 now and killed my bike in the middle of the intersection in Tampa/Valrico a while back. There is always something to learn. I still get anxious sometimes before a ride. My bike is Plastic Pam the '92 blue Goldwing.

My 2012 Dyna Wide Glide’s name is Brunhilde. Her name comes from the Wagner Ring Cycle (opera) role that I had big dreams of performing. Got sick and damaged my instrument, so no more opera singing for me. But Brunhilde Carrie’s me to Valhalla every time she fires up. I drove a trike for 10 years. when I was getting ready to turn 60 I wanted to learn to ride a bike. I love it but last week I dropped over on my bike. I thought it was a sign to go back to my trike.... quit on a 2 wheel.....I am anxious and queasy and freaked out.....but you have encouraged me to keep on! I am 50 years old, when I was a kid I rode with my brother on his bike. My dad had a buddy and every time he got a bike in at the car dealership. He would came and get and take for a ride on it, which that I was awesome. When I got older I rode A 3-wheel. Fast forward about 30 years, my son got first bike and it was 125 Kawasaki, I rode that some. Then last year I bought my Nightster and it name it sonny. I name it after a horse had when I was a kid, he was my buddy and I could d anything with him.

I think this video can help a lot of riders out with having anxiety to ride or the MSF or failed the MSF or whatever. I ain't anxious for riding now but when I needed to go for exams I had the healthy nerves going through cause you want it so bad but worked out, had to do it in a few tries as well. tried getting the mc-license in the wrong order 1-2 years ago, went from 50cc scooter to the school-bike which was a suzuki 650cc with gears or something similar, first lesson (with the teacher sitting behind me) i stalled it a lot + revving it a lot and ended with too much throttle and lifted the bike, cant remember the english word for it when people drive on the back-wheel only but in my sketchy moment it was standing still, too much throttle and felt like i was falling backwards, crazy scary, teacher had to drive back to school and that was it. Maybe just get a moped to learn how to shift gears and when/if interest is big enough then i can continue with 125cc-license or somethin` interesting video btw 👍

I’m 40 and have just passed my CBT (UK version of MSF) plus I have never driven a car. Every day is a school day as I’ve only been riding for a week. I don’t have any family or friends that ride however I’m starting to build that trust in my bike. Her name is Cherry a red Honda CB125F. I’m now planning on gaining my full license in the spring.

Thanks, Jess. I enjoy continuing to see new videos from you. My current bike is a 24 year old Honda shadow aero 1100 I call Turina. I was previously on 292cc maxi scooters: 2018 Yamaha X MAX I named Camille and a 2019 X MAX I named Justine. The latter I lost in June 2022 after getting rear ended at a stop light. The settlement from that made it possible for me to get the Shadow. Before the accident, I did well enough on the maxi scooter to develop a degree of hubris so I got a shock when the difference between that and a full fledged motorcycle was more significant than I thought it would be. I need work with my riding on the Shadow, but things are slowly starting to look up. It's taking longer to get there than I can stand, but the outlook is moving in the right direction. You’re exactly right , I’ve been riding for years but not all the time as in the last twenty years. I was grandfathered in on my license and went ahead and took a rider safety course with my wife, best thing I could have done! Learned a little more technique and “correct “ riding! Hi Jess, I love your videos. (I am from the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 ) I got my motorcycle license in 2008 and my first bike was a Yamaha Diversion XJ600s (no name) in 2017 I had to sell it unfortunately. And then I didn’t ride or owned a motorcycle at all. In February this year I went to a big motorcycle fair and there I bought a 2008 Suzuki V-Strom DL650. It’s black/dark grey. And he looks brandnew! So after five years I started riding again! 🥰 I gave him the name Black Wolf or Wolfie for short. Kind regards, Edwin

Im with you, I am now on my second bike. Only had 6 weeks on my first bike and crashed. It is now 40 years later and bought a Road Glide!! I call it my first bike! I just finished my 3rd season on my baby and have done 50,000 kms on her!!! Spent a lot of time in parking lots learning slow speed handling, emergency braking, u-turns and figure 8’s before my wife got on the back. We have ridden to Winnipeg (from Toronto) and I rode to BC this past September and went through the US (Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan!!!) on the way home. Trip of a lifetime. Found some amazing roads and mind blowing scenery!!! Don’t regret getting a 900+ lb motorcycle for a minute!!!! LOVE riding!!!

I think a versys x300 is a good choice to start. Light. Low enough. Will do 70 when you want to. Don’t need to sell it after 6 months. I’ve been riding for 50 years, and it still works for me.

Thank you for the pep talk! Sold my last bike in 1990 and at 61 have decided it's time. Ready to tour doing a lot of camping while I can. Shopping and going to take class in 3 weeks. Excited and nervous at same time. I have talked to local LEO about where I can go and practice and they told me the high school has a small drivers-ed course. Have at and have a ball. Time to re-learn my limitations. Ride safe!

So I just got my 4th bike a 23 Indian Pursuit DH and its the first one I've given a name Coyote because the color is similar to the animal. My wife got her first bike a 20 Indian Scout she named Whistler after the character in Blade. We are looking forward to many trips and rides through the years.

I am 71. I am from Columbus. I now live in Australia. I ride a 26 year old Yamaha 1100 virago. Had a BMW GS for 13 years. But in OZ, having Japaneses, is better than most others for back up. So I am watching you. I was just in MT. Vernon, where my Mother lives. Stay up right and enjoy two wheels.

Jess i had a similar story, didn't get into motorcycles until later in life as well, i didn't know anyone that had a bike either, i took the msf course and that was the first time riding, i was definitely nervous but i was happy i did it. Definitely recommend the honda Shadow as a first bike. Motorcycling has made such a positive impact on my life, I met so many great bikers, love the videos 👍

I’m so glad I found this video. Got my first motorcycle about 3 weeks ago, and my MSF course is in 2 weeks. Have poodled it around my neighborhood 3 times, and while I have gotten more comfortable with certain things - I find myself more and more anxious at just the thought of trying to practice. It has started driving me crazy because I’m making excuses to myself, and talking myself out of just simple practice. Really hoping the MSF helps me gain some confidence.

I have three. None have names. I see them as carefully arranged piles of parts. The magic that makes them go, and makes them reliable, and assures that they are there for us, comes from the people who made them, and myself, who maintains them. Quality = Love x Skill. If you are very good at fixing your bike, you can casually keep it a good bike. If you obsessively do everything you can for it, you can keep it a good bike with a lot of effort and care. If you persist long enough at this, you will lavish extremely skilled care on it, and you become capable of making it more than what it was originally. Your bike is a bank account of order and precision. You make deposits by working on it and riding it. Is quality comes from charging up your bike with order and precision using your life force (love, time and attention). Its quality is multiplied by your own roadcraft. A higher quality rider can get a higher quality ride out of the same bike. If you live with and love your bike, and your ride, for long enough, you can feel the glow when it is as good as you can make it. If it is good enough, it will make up for some of your shortcomings. It will respond more quickly and more precisely to your needs. It could even save your ass in a way that a rolling wreck could not. In that way it responds a great deal like a life partner. The quality of their presence in your life is a reflection of the quality of your tending of them. That stored and reflected love is the only way in which I see life or personality in a bike.

Thank you for this video. My wife introduced me to your channel. And we’ve been watching and following you ever since. I ride an Indian Pursuit and my wife absolutely loves riding along with me. Recently she’s been asking questions about learning to ride a bike on her own and we’ve been discussing it. She has alot of anxiety about it but also a lot of desire to learn. Your videos really help give her the confidence to believe she can do this. Of course I’m supportive and encouraging her to as much as possible but having you out there riding and posting speaks to her in a way I can’t. Thank you for doing this. I hope one day soon I can be riding alongside of my sweet wife, watching her enjoy the feeling as much as I am.

My first ride after my accident (yes, I got another Harley after breaking my back) was a bit nervous. My wife fell in love with a black and orange 42’ 5th wheel toy hauler, which she named Tigger. So the Harley trike that went into the garage obviously had to be called Piglet. 9(ow piglet 3)

I was a late starter at 54yrs...signed up with the HD and nope failed the range 3 wks later did a walk in at msf barely past but I felt more comfortable...after going to motorcycle event and researching 3 wheels was the bike for me to grow with...long story short I'm now 61 and still riding. I have 3 spyders named my 1st Wicked, 2nd Mystic, and 3rd Pepper. I love riding and continuing to learn more each season. Thanks for sharing your story and encouraging others to find their passion.

I never rode a motorcycle until I was 55 years old. The change of life getting older didn't want a fancy car but I have a MCL issue my knee is not the best so I went for a Burgman 650 trike. A true trike three wheels and love it. My trike can ride with any Harley or any other two wheel bike. I take very good care of my bike, never ride it in the snow and get it maintained every year

I friking love this!!! My first bike was a sportster 1200. I didn’t ride it much cause we just didn’t vibe. My second bike was a Gixxer 600. (Sporty) named Big Sexy. I loved that bike but had to give it up because I needed a car. I live in Washington state so we have like 3 months of “decent” riding weather so I don’t think I’ll be looking for another bike anytime soon. I’m good w being on the back of my husbands bike. I learned how to ride a "BICYCLE" when I was 22 years old. You CAN do anything you put your mind to. Being scared is normal. Defensive riding and a lot of miles under your belt will change everything. You get used to the speed and guessing where things will go. Good luck

I relate to your story so much! I’m 24 and took my msf a few weeks ago and failed! I felt so discouraged but didn’t want to give up on my dream of riding! 2 weeks later I bought my first motorcycle and I was finally able to take it for a ride in the lot! I’m able to ride around in first gear with only one problem that I didn’t understand until I did a little research, whisky throttle! I’m excited to hop back on once the weather is a little better to practice some more with the new information I’ve learned since my last ride. Your video is so encouraging and really makes me feel so much better about being a new rider!

❤ this video! I've been riding (on/off) since 2004, and just recently got my '07 Honda VTX1300C running after it sat on my Pop's driveway for a couple of years. With a little help from my friends, I did most of the work myself, except for the tires. Had to take it to a friend's place because he's got a bike stand and tools that I don't have. Took me forever to get the carburetor cleaned out, but now the ol' gal (not her name, and I don't have one yet) is running good. Now the reason I loved this video is because you spoke the truth of beginner riding. I talked to my daughter recently, and she expressed an interest in riding a motorcycle. Right now she's going through some counseling and medication that (in my opinion) is harmful to the human body. Especially the mind, and she stated that the meds is not working well for her. I believe in other avenues of therapy in forms of activities, the gym, etc. even the motorcycle. And I hope that when she gets her driver's license and motorcycle learner's permit, that she too will experience the joy of riding like all of us have. So I will share this video with my daughter. With thousands of miles of riding on 4 wheels under my belt and at 39 years of age I finally did my MSF and got my endorsement. I bought my first Harley and I’ve never felt more right then when I’m riding my motorcycle it felt like I wasted too many miles on four wheels. I’m 40 years old now so I’ve only been riding since March I’ve put almost 7,000 miles on my 01 Harley Davidson Softail Deuce since getting it. I am slowly modifying it to my liking without putting it out of commission. Between you and your husband, Thank you for putting out videos that have gave me ideas on what to look for that will improve the enjoyment of an already enjoyable experience of my riding my bike. The name of my bike is C-LEO (Cleo) and when I’m done with her she will be a 2001 Harley Davidson Deuce Road Queen. Thank you again guys.
