@@TomLodziak I know what you mean. I guess I meant to say your form has improved. Whether that is translating to matches I don't know. But all the coaches you are working with and your new videos reveal more textbook form than say your 2017 or 2016 videos. Your form in this video is pretty intimidating other than maybe not being as low as a true pro. I know firsthand that coaching ruins your match play as you get too used to feeding students balls to hit rather than the balls to miss you should be feeding people in matches. But I think less trolls will come round making nasty comments about your form in this video (unless of course they are completely delusional and looking for a treatise on how to loop like Ma Long).

Ha! Yes, they are always my favourite comments "you are no good, you should try and play like Ma Long / Fan Zhendong". If only it was so easy! Thanks for your kind words. You have made me a happy coach this evening.

@@TomLodziak I totally agree, I also think that your form has improved. If I compare the stroke from videos three years ago, this one lookes more fluid, compact and with more body movement :) I am pretty sure that teaching goes both ways, you get more self-aware on your own stroke and what's missing. Oh yeah, and your videos have improved too. You cover important aspects, always bring up important points and good demonstration. I like the way you communicate and explain. Good choice of training partnes too. Keep up the good work!

Hey Tom! In one TT video EmRatThich tried to explain that acceleration at the point of contact with the ball is the most imporant thing to create stong and good stoke (also that spin is the most important of spin, speed and power). I understand it in general, but I would like you to clarify it for us - how (or whether) should we (beginners) apply and develop acceleration in top spin stokes. Much obliged!
@TomLodziak5 жыл бұрын
Acceleration is an important aspect of topspin strokes. Definitely agree. But from my experience, the bits beginner's should focus on most to begin with is the brushing contact, bat start point and bat finish point. When you have got these consistent, then I think it becomes easier to add the acceleration to the shot. If beginner's focus too much on acceleration to begin with, they often find it hard to get the correct timing and brushing contact.

I wonder if one of the reasons why I sometimes miss the table while doing a forehand top spin smash is because I smash it like a tennis player. I mean, with too much exaggerated and dramatic arm movements, like I'm about to punch someone. When I'm smashing the ball, I often lose my balance right afterwards, and stumble forward. I believe I'm too tense while smashing. You're doing the forehand topspin with very little arm movement and effort. Also, it feels scary to do it. It's like going all-in in poker. I have a tendency to just avoid the forehand and sort of scoop it straight upwards from almost underneath the table instead, but that also has to do with lack of confidence. I haven't played in like almost 20 years, so I've become too passive compared to in the past. Being on the receiving end of a top spin shot feels like such a surprise, because I have to react so quickly, and return it with pace on the ball. So I hate playing against people who know how to do a forehand topspin, because it makes the ball literally shoot straight towards my face. It's like manhandling a wild animal coming towards you.
@JinJeonPingPong4 жыл бұрын
Never become passive as you're willingly giving the opponent the advantage. However if you are swinging so hard that you lose your balance, simply turn the intensity down a little bit. The ball is feather light and you can hit a winner at 75% strength. Don't forget that even with the smash, the table tennis stroke mechanics must be followed. The regular tennis mechanics won't allow you to recover fast enough.

Hi, I am Krishnakanth from India. Initially, I started my table tennis with the basic bat then a coach given me a new setup. Blade : New Joola Rosio All round medium carbon blade FH: Jool Rakza 7 BH: Joola mambo C ( Both are his used rubbers) I felt very happy that time. After 2 years around, a friend said the rubbers are dead so he suggested Donic Coppa Jo gold (FH) and Donic Sonex jp gold (BH) so I bought them about 8 months back around but after that my game is not controllable and I felt rubbers are fast. And by mistake, my bat was fell down and it was broken a few days back so now again another friend who plays well, suggesting me to buy Stiga Clipper CR wooden blade. but I am feeling that old set up is fine which initially coach given so now i am planing to go for below set up again. Blade : Joola Rosio All round medium carbon blade FH: Jool Rakza 7 BH: Not yet decided I feel that I am an intermediate player. Could you please suggest whether i am going in correct direction or not..? And could you please advice which blade and rubber will be better for intermediate based on your experience? Thanks and Regards, Krishnakanth Pamu

I have been playing many years but without professional coach and practices and so I dont get some of the most important basic right yet as you mentioned which is one of the most important strive to make us win a point.. I tried many times but still not be able to master this topspin stroke yet.. can you advise? Do I just need more practice or do something else differently? thanks,
@TomLodziak4 жыл бұрын
It's difficult for me to say, without seeing you play. There could be any number of reasons why your topspin stroke isn't working. My best advice is to slow the shot down and just focus on bat starting point and bat finishing point and bat angle (as shown in the video). If you get these elements right, then you should be developing a decent topspin stroke.

@Tom Lodziak Hey I'm an amateur trainer myself and train kids in my local club. Im just watching everything i can to get alot of information and new teaching techniques to teach faster and variable.Quality Stuff from, you right here. My favourite techniques for topspins teaching on backspin are: 1. Let them throwing Balls to me in( like Multiball) with topspin so they get the hand raquet feeling very fast instead of doing theirself multiball. 2. Let them spin a ball over the net rolling from the middle to edge of the tabl to get huge Spin and the feeling. ( Eli does this in a video too). 3 Repetition, Repetition.

Yes, I think having a few different ways of teaching people the same thing is useful, as you never know which method is going to stick with which individual. Once the player has the feeling of brushing the ball, then it becomes much easier to add in the more advanced stuff - legs, waist, wrist etc. Thanks for sharing your methods.

First of all, awesome job on your videos!!! I recently started playing in a local table tennis club and your lessons and advise really helped me a lot. I have a question though as my coach told me while practicing forehand topspins to let the ball drop a bit after reaching its peak before contacting/brushing it. It seems to me I can generate a bit more spin with this kind of "late" contact but I got the feeling I might give the opponent too much time to get ready for my shot. So what would you say should the timing of the shot be? At the balls peak or letting the ball drop a bit? Many thanks in advance :)
@TomLodziak4 жыл бұрын
Good question and there is no right or wrong approach. Some players prefer to let the ball drop a little and then play with heavy spin, but as you say, your opponent has a bit more time to react. I prefer taking the ball earlier - top of the bounce or as the ball is rising - so I can take time away from my opponent. For you, I would suggest trying both methods and see which fits best for your playing style.
@Azraeluchiha9994 жыл бұрын
I try this but i feel like i'll use too much strength and that i lack control. i typically only use the backspin and drive for the attack, frontspin to return fast serves and back to block and push fast serves back. I'm trying to become a more complete player but i feel so incomplete without a forehand serve.

@knzanderson5 жыл бұрын
I’m not the guy in the video but I think I might be able to help you. “Fast serves” are usually called in TT the long ones, I mean, the ones which bounces at the opponent’s side and at its second bounce, the ball goes off the table. It’s very common to new players receive those kind of services with their bat angled wrong. So well, in your situation, even if your not a new player, you just need to see if your opponent is putting top spin on his fast serve. If he is, just close your bat angle a little bit and block. Also, you can counter attack serves with top spin pretty easily.

Your bat angle should not change through the stroke (45 degrees closed for normal topspin). The trajectory from beginning of the stroke to the end should travel diagonal from low to high in a straight line.
