Leah, my name is Jeff and I am a plastering contractor. I specialize in ornamental and cast mold work. One tip, fill your lime putty 2/3 of a bucket, leaving a good space to fill with water, than add your slow set gauging plaster directly into the bucket. Let the gauging take up (5 minute), using a low rpm paddle drill ,attached with a mudd bit/ mixing bit, push the gauging through to the bottom and drill. Less work, less mess, and most importantly the finish mudd is throughly mixed. This will also aid in the first coat " taking up", so you can get to applying your second coat, better known as the " draw" coat. I was impressed with your tutorial, through. You picked up on all the small but extremely significant details, good job. Just one more note point, next time try using Imperial Diamond veneer basecoat. One coat not 2, and it is a better product. Structo-lite is gypsum plaster and perlite. I primarily use for patching. With this material as I am sure you know, the thicker the material say half inch, the wall becomes extremely hard. Although the veneer mudd is thinner and requires a bit more skill to apply. Well I finally found a KZbin video I can truly relate to!
@karenflowers97113 жыл бұрын
I searched for a long time to find someone who uses real plaster. I live in Maryland and I can NOT find veneer basecoat anywhere, I had to drive an hour to find gauging plaster and order lime online. Crazy, I'm undoing so many horrible bandaids in this old house. I'm 64 and just learning. Love her tutorials. Thanks for the added comment

I don't know how many of your videos have helped me. I'm renovating a mid-century concrete poured house. A lot of the walls have deterioted over the years. Our options were to gut everything inside or take the time to repair. the whole interior is plaster on a concrete base, so I've been using your teachings to repair the concrete-seal and and re-texture with joint-compound. (It really works well ( w some tiral and errors) sets up nice and solid and super easy to match the existing texture) this video will help will help with a kitchen wall that needs to be plastered and stamped with subway tile pattern. I'm really suprised with how well most of the house held up over the years and really, your videos have helped us preseve the original details. Thank you!

Leah, I'm really impressed. That is a dying art and you do it SO WELL. Love your technique with the 'blister buster'. I haven't seen anyone do this in 40 years. As a painter we had to go around and fix all the little nicks the plasterers left behind. I'm sure your work would have put them to shame. I know a couple of hard wall plasterers but they really only do render. It's the same technique though for the first stage, but that's as far as they go. Did you learn off an English person? Some of those old tradesmen are still around. .I've never seen the gauge plaster method ever, so I'm learning something completely new from you. Modern houses are just not done like this any more.

I just viewed this video It brings back memories, my step father in Tampa Fla. Did plaster and stucco for over 40yrs. And later when he had his own business, all he did was custom work . He would always getting jobs restoring old homes in the area due to the fact that had a lot of plaster walls and plaster molding. And nobody could do good quality work as good as he could. He would make his own plaster template for running plaster molds and make very good money. So suggest your next video should on how to run a plaster molding on a wall. That would a good video.

thank you! You seem so nice 👍 I did plastering once for a friend and I screwed up totally. In Holland they don’t do the 2 finishing coats. They dry the base coat (until bouncy) and spray it, or sponge it, so a wet film is created (the finish coat) and then they start ‘knifing’ (with a spackmes), it can end up as smooth as you like. I never got it down, but I have seen it done. Thank you 🙏 for this video, I learned a lot of new things.

Thank you very much for this informative video Leah! This and your other plastering videos helped me so much in learning and understanding critical details(especially the water troweling part which is like a miracle and leaves an awesome glass like finish in plaster). And after a little practice, I find working with plaster much more intuitive and satisfying as opposed to drywall compound. I had to close off a few doors in my house and using blueboard and veneer plaster(very similar skills to lime putty coat in this video) I was able to acheive a perfectly smooth and blended result, all in one day and no sanding!!! I can't wait to see more of your plastering videos. I know it might be hard to convey in a video, but it would be awesome to hear on how to tell if plaster is correct consistency when mixing.

My mother was a mud dobber too! She loved doing the fancy designs for clients, because it was a rare treat and she got to really show off her skills. I used to do basic drywall jobs with her in the summers as a teen to pick up cash. I should've paid attention more :/ Her lungs were ruined from the dust, but plaster seems a bit friendlier on a body that way.
