I have taken several beginner stained glass classes over the years and never once has anyone ever discussed the toxicity of patina or had a dedicated trash bin for patina contaminated materials. Thank you.

Great series. Finally I realized that just one class doesn’t prepared me for making big projects. You have demonstrated the importance of been organized and having the right tools. Will keep reviewing this series before starting my projects.

I wish I found your videos first. I do have one question on the black patina. It appears there are two bottles, the one you had labeled for solder and lead then they have one labeled for zinc. Obviously you had no problem with it, do you know why they would sell two versions?
@greatglassgalore3 ай бұрын
I don't know. I've tried the black patina for zinc on zinc and it doesn't work on zinc as well as using the black patina for solder on zinc. I don't know if there is some cleaning process or chemical you need to use on the zinc before you patina. I usually sand down the frame with a green scotch bright pad. Then clean with 91% alcohol followed by Kwik Clean before I patina.

Can you recommend a good set of running pliers and grazing pliers

Choice running pliers and Fan Out breaking & grozing pliers.

I just (almost) finished my first projects, but I just realized I don’t have the finishing compound! Do I absolutely need that step?
@greatglassgalore5 ай бұрын
it helps seal the joints from getting white crud. makes a big difference on how shiny and clean your projects look. Finishing compound is made with carnauba wax. So you can try a car wax with it instead if you cant find any.

I bought a Hakko 601-02 iron .what setting should it be set on? I don't know much about iron settings
@greatglassgalore5 ай бұрын
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I have retired and moved in the last 6 months. I don't know about the 601-02 settings. I don't think this iron or the 601-01 is adequate for stained glass. I recommend the original Hakko FX-601. This will be the most expensive 601 on Amazon. Now priced at over $100.

Why is the patina neccesary. I've tried to Google it but I cant seem to find out why. I understand that the term patina is to make something look older or antique. What will happen without the patina?
@lindaehlers81472 жыл бұрын
It is not necessary. You can leave the solder silver. The silver dulls with age, but the finishing compound shines it back up.

As soon as things started opening up after the COVID shutdown, I started back to teaching in May of 2021. Then got diagnosed with breast cancer a week later, and had to suspend classes and deal with the cancer. I started teaching again in the fall of 2021 and there was a big pent up demand for classes, my custom work, and supplies. Because of the cancer, my husband and I then decide to retire early, build a custom home on the western slope of Colorado and move to be closer to hiking and a quite neighborhood. So it's been a busy year and a half running my business, reducing my inventory, and training one of my students to teach and take over my business. I'm now doing some stained and fused glass for myself, and maybe will post some new videos next winter after this summers hiking season is over.

Doesnt the scour pads scratch the glass?.
@greatglassgalore8 ай бұрын
Yes. You only want to sand the frame.
