I'd probably recommend you turn your computer on for 10 minutes, open up a couple of chrome tabs and heat up that thermal paste. It makes removing the cooler a lot easier. Especially if you haven't removed the cooler in some time, you can rip the cpu right out of the socket. Yes I am speaking from experience 😉

Top tip for removing an old heat sink. Run the PC up for a few minutes. Then shut it down, and unplug it. The heat sink will pop off easily. The reason is when it is cold the paste sets like concrete. Running the PC for a few minutes heats up the CPU and, hence the paste. It will then be soft and will allow the CPU to be removed a lot more easily. :)

The whole build process is about as easy as this by the way, in case you ever thought maybe building a computer would be beneficial to you. It's just a lot of reading manuals and very carefully slotting things in. Not rocket science. The hardest part is finding what parts you want and that are compatible with eachother. The actual building can be slow and tedious, but I wouldn't call it hard at all.

When remove old paste, I use lint-less wipes and alcohol or pure acetone. Then after wipe it clean to remove any residue with a dry, soft lint-less wipe. When you use a cotton swab it can leave tiny fibers on the CPU so you have to wipe it off after cleaning. The same goes for cloth like micro fiber too.

@TheRealDarkbreeze
@TheRealDarkbreeze 3 жыл бұрын
You should never use paper towels or Q-tips unless absolutely necessary because you have no other option, in a pinch, so to speak. What you SHOULD use is a lint free microfiber cloth or paper coffee filter. These don't leave particulates behind. Around the edges, as you did, is fine, but the actual surfaces should be final wiped with a clean lint free or microfiber cloth, or paper coffee filter, with a lightly dampened application of 91% Isopropyl alcohol. I see a lot of these videos recommending 99% Iso alcohol, but personally I've never seen that available through any local stores AND it tends to evaporate TOO quickly. 91% is very effective, and available globally. Other than that, good enough for the girls I go with, so to speak.

Well, for PCs it's easy. But about consoles? Like my jet engine Ps4 pro that's about to take off. Idk if i should use more than i used on my PC. I use the Cooler Master maker gel 11kw conductivity. I fear liquid metal! So how much should i apply? Well anyway by the time you see this console peasant comment it will be too late! LMAO!

Any reputable thermal paste will do the trick. Just make sure to cover the entire die much like a laptop.

I would recommend 99 percent alcohol because if you use 70-90 percent alcohol, 30-10% of the alcohol is still water. And that's just not cool, is it?

Recently deep cleaned my PC (i7 14th gen + Cooler Master ML240 liquid cooler), but I didn't bother cleaning off the old thermal paste since it's only 2 months old. After reassembling, my PC kept tripping-turning on and then immediately off, like someone was cutting the power. Could this be caused by the thermal paste not being replaced?

This looks like such an hassle to do, how safe is it to just ignore it on a 6 years old pc? I don't really care about risking it just to lower the temperature of 1-2 degrees.
@TechIlliterate
@TechIlliterate 3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to mess it up to be honest. If your PC hasnt had it changed for 6 years you may see a change of 5-20 degrees. That being said, as long as it's running ok then you don't really have to worry.
@Kumire_921

@@TechIlliterate I'm only considering it because i have what seems to be an overheating problem, which causes the PC to freeze and shutdown when under heavy load. I think the cause might be a faulty PSU rather than simply an aged thermal compound though.
@TechIlliterate
@TechIlliterate 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kumire_921 Yup that's possible. I have had that issue before. use a diagnostic tool like HWiNFO to check thermals. If you are easily hitting the temp limit I would suggest repasting before buying a PSU
