Sorry, do you need to clear wax before applying the dark? And, yes best information tutorial I’ve watched. Thank you x
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 2 ай бұрын
No worries and thank you! We are all new to everything at sometime ❤️ thats kind of a loaded answer. On one hand yes, you need to clear wax before you dark wax. This will allow you to manipulate the dark wax and not change the actual paint color in the process. BUT as in all art maybe you want to change the color. 😜 for example if I paint something a light tan color but I want it to look like a wood tone I may skip the clear wax and go straight to dark wax. This will basically stain the paint the color of wax. This also works the same for other colors of wax. Annie Sloan makes white wax. So if you skip clear wax and put white wax on paint it will lighten/white wash it. I guess all that is to say is that whatever color the first layer of wax is that touches the paint is what color you are going to stain that paint with because wax and chalk paint combine to make one. Hope this helps and I didn’t just complicate the issue more 😜❤️

Oh wow you respond quickly I have a got question I just painted my old cherry oak coffee table set I coated double layers the finishing of paint isn’t that clean I’m not happy so what should I do and it’s not fresh I let it dry
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 7 ай бұрын
Hello! Depending on why you aren’t happy with it, there are a variety of solutions. But I’ll try to cover what most people have issues with. If you don’t like the brush stroke look you could have either watered down the paint while painting or sand with a fine grit sanding sponge after it dried to smooth it out. Sometimes if you are painting a light color over cherry stain, the cherry color can bleed through. If that is the issue, wipe or spray a layer of shellac. Then add another layer of paint. The shellac would seal in the cherry. Not sure what you mean by clean. If it just looks messy you could be using too much paint? It’s best to spread out as much as possible and thin coats are better than thick. Hope that helps some.

Do you have a tutorial that I can watch before I attempt this... Also with these being kitchen cabinets is it better use something other then wax to seal it...

Hello. You could watch these two tutorials I’ll post below. None talk about just that specific situation but about dark wax on cabinets in general. Wax is a great sealer and is what I tend to use but Annie Sloan also has a lacquer that you can use instead.

In general the supplies you will need to get started with Annie Sloan chalk paint are: -Annie Sloan chalk Paint -paint brush (I like the round bristle Annie Sloan ones) -Annie Sloan clear wax -Annie Sloan wax brush (I like the “small” one) -Annie Sloan dark wax (if you want antiquing) -blue shop towels -fine grit sanding sponges (possibly) My best advise would be to stop at an Annie Sloan store for the first time if possible :) also because most of them are fabulous hand picked stores too! Hope this helps!

@@stacysfarmhouselife5845 it lasts as long as any other topcoat would, and water beads up off of it. What about bleed through? You didn't prime/prep your piece.
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn Ай бұрын
Annie Sloan paint (and other chalk paints) do not require primer or traditional prep. That’s what makes them so special. And why you seal them at the end. I have been using them for years on so many different types of surfaces and it works perfect! As for bleed through, on the occasion that it does happen you can wipe a layer of shellac over it and paint again once dry.

If I decide to add more paint after I have waxed a project, do I need to wipe the wax off or just paint over it?
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 4 күн бұрын
Technically you can paint over Annie Sloan wax with Annie Sloan paint. (Not all brands you can do that with) how well it sticks and to what degree you are painting over it varies your results. If you are touching up a spot, slap the paint on there, let dry and wax the new paint area. If you are repainting with a solid coat and your wax has been cured for a long time, slap it on and go, then rewax. If you just waxed recently, and it’s thick, you can take mineral spirits and try to get the excess wax off before painting (you can do this at anytime, but works really well when it’s not cured) then repaint and rewax. Hope that answer helps. I know there are lots of variables in that answer, sorry! 😬❤️

Hey Beautiful! I just purchased a Marsh Hoosier Cabinet. It's in decent condition but needs to be prepped and painted ... HOPEFULLY in chalk paint. Would love to see you highlight a hoosier project! Thanks for you/your tutorials!

I have a coffee table thst i used blue chalk paint. I used lacquer to seal the paint but soon a yellow color started coming through. It may have had an oil based paint originally. Now I want to use another color on my table. Should I use a stain blocker before I paint on the new color to take care of the yellow that previously came through the blue color that I first painted it with? What kind of stain blocker would you suggest? Thank you so much!
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 6 ай бұрын
Hello! That does sound exactly like the tannins or stains coming through. Sometimes lacquer itself can pull them through the paint. Although the layer of lacquer may stop it from happening again. So you may be fine to paint again or you could put a layer of shellac on or a layer of stain blocking primer. I like kilz or bulls eye 123. Hope that helps :)

Thank you for removing the drawer & hardware before painting it! I see so many videos where they just paint over it and that's just cheap & lazy to me. If someone wanted to change the painted over hardware, it would have to be the exact same size or larger - my OCD just won't allow it, LOL!

🤣 yep! I agreed with you! Plus changing out hardware is one of the best ways to change the look of something, so why make that harder on yourself :) glad you liked it ❤️

Hello! Thank you for your kind words! Once you put the wax on the paint, and then the wax cures, it creates a solid, wipeable finish.

Why did i get fingerprint marks on my chairs even though I used clear wax and how do I get rid of them?
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 2 ай бұрын
There could be a variety of reasons. You may have too much wax/too thick of a layer. You can take wax off by taking mineral spirits and a rag and wiping with it. That will help you get back to the paint layer (but won’t damage the paint) and you can re-wax if needed with a thinner layer. Other possible situation is that the wax simply isn’t cured yet. Depending on temps, how thick it is and what color it is waxed over it could easily take a month to cure. Whether it is because of time or thickness once wax is cured it really doesn’t typically show finger prints (worse on dark colors though). Hope this helps ❤️

Lovely. This video is great for hearing impaired and deaf crafters. She speaks perfectly for lip readers. That plus auto gen subtitles should be enough for most. One in eight people is hard of hearing. Would be great if KZbin added tags for "good for hearing impaired."

Hello. I am sorry, I haven’t used that one, so I don’t have a for sure answer for you. At least I would be sure to clean it well and give it a good scuff sand before painting.

I'm a professional painter by trade and I paint lots of wood cabinets, I notice you didn't prime the wood first. Why? Is chalk paint that durable that you don't need primer? TIA.
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, chalk paint is meant to not have primer used with it. That’s kinda it’s whole appeal ;) I know it’s a hard thing to get used to, trust me, I used to have the same doubts but I have had such amazing results with this stuff for 8 years. On that note though, I only use good quality stuff like Annie Sloan.

And I have painted many kitchens with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and with specialty cabinet paint. Never had a complaint with either product. You may check into a new line of paint from Annie Sloan that just came out last month that still doesn’t need primer (does need scuff sanding) and is self leveling with no top coat. It’s is specifically made for cabinets and trim. I need to get my hands on some :)

I made the mistake of using dark wax with no clear wax. It’s too dark, do I have to sand it before repainting it? Do I need to let the wax completely cure first?
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn Жыл бұрын
Hello! Don’t worry, we have all done this a time or two in our painting lives! I would suggest to take as much wax off as possible with mineral spirits, then paint over. You do not need to let it cure first.

You can paint Annie Sloan paint over Annie Sloan wax. I like to try to take off as much of the wax as possible, or let it cure for a couple weeks. If you would like to take off any excess wax, use mineral spirits and wipe it off. Then paint.

How would you achieve a look that shows barely coated wood overall and paint accented heavier along trim pieces. Wish I could send a photo.
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 11 ай бұрын
It’s hard to know exactly, but when I am guessing you mean is a try of paint washed look? If so you water the paint down in the thinner areas. Although it is best to sand those areas down some to have the paint soak into something. Sorry if that’s not what you mean 😬

How do I make my Sloan chalk painted furniture “SHINY” or Glossy ?
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 9 ай бұрын
I would suggest to use the gloss lacquer topcoat instead of wax then. You can buff wax to a shine also, but it is best to be a soft matte look in my opinion.

How would do you day to day dusting/cleaning on the finished product once the wax has dried?
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn 2 жыл бұрын
I typically just do soap and water where needed. Or dust with a dry lint rag. I also have seen a variety of natural products work great, like thieves cleaning spray. Mostly I would just stay away from pledge. It has been know to break down the wax after prolonged use.

What grade of sander should I use to remove chalk paint?
@OriginallyWorn
@OriginallyWorn Жыл бұрын
That depends is you waxed it yet or not and if you are trying to remove it fully or distress it. I would try to remove as much wax as possible first with mineral spirits, and then start sanding with a medium grit, possibly 220.
