Sorry, do you need to clear wax before applying the dark? And, yes best information tutorial I’ve watched. Thank you x
@OriginallyWorn4 ай бұрын
No worries and thank you! We are all new to everything at sometime ❤️ thats kind of a loaded answer. On one hand yes, you need to clear wax before you dark wax. This will allow you to manipulate the dark wax and not change the actual paint color in the process. BUT as in all art maybe you want to change the color. 😜 for example if I paint something a light tan color but I want it to look like a wood tone I may skip the clear wax and go straight to dark wax. This will basically stain the paint the color of wax. This also works the same for other colors of wax. Annie Sloan makes white wax. So if you skip clear wax and put white wax on paint it will lighten/white wash it. I guess all that is to say is that whatever color the first layer of wax is that touches the paint is what color you are going to stain that paint with because wax and chalk paint combine to make one. Hope this helps and I didn’t just complicate the issue more 😜❤️

This video is awesome! I should have watched it before I started my project. I used chalk paint on our bathroom vanity. I painted and then used poly on it. It changed the color and changed the look. I thought I would sand it down a bit and distress the corners. Thoughts on using wax to cover it eventhough there still could and probably still will have poly in some places?
@OriginallyWorn Жыл бұрын
Hey! Glad to help! There is nothing wrong with using poly either (just changes the final finish like you said) I have videos on how I poly cabinets too, although wax is my preferred method due to ease and look. You can’t really just put wax on top of poly, I mean you could, but it’s not going to have anything to soak into. I would suggest either giving it a pretty decent sand first or painting another layer of chalk paint, then waxing that layer. Think of poly as something that sits on top of paint and wax something that soaks into a porous paint and creates a bond with it. Neither way is bad :)

Oh wow you respond quickly I have a got question I just painted my old cherry oak coffee table set I coated double layers the finishing of paint isn’t that clean I’m not happy so what should I do and it’s not fresh I let it dry
@OriginallyWorn9 ай бұрын
Hello! Depending on why you aren’t happy with it, there are a variety of solutions. But I’ll try to cover what most people have issues with. If you don’t like the brush stroke look you could have either watered down the paint while painting or sand with a fine grit sanding sponge after it dried to smooth it out. Sometimes if you are painting a light color over cherry stain, the cherry color can bleed through. If that is the issue, wipe or spray a layer of shellac. Then add another layer of paint. The shellac would seal in the cherry. Not sure what you mean by clean. If it just looks messy you could be using too much paint? It’s best to spread out as much as possible and thin coats are better than thick. Hope that helps some.

I have a coffee table thst i used blue chalk paint. I used lacquer to seal the paint but soon a yellow color started coming through. It may have had an oil based paint originally. Now I want to use another color on my table. Should I use a stain blocker before I paint on the new color to take care of the yellow that previously came through the blue color that I first painted it with? What kind of stain blocker would you suggest? Thank you so much!
@OriginallyWorn8 ай бұрын
Hello! That does sound exactly like the tannins or stains coming through. Sometimes lacquer itself can pull them through the paint. Although the layer of lacquer may stop it from happening again. So you may be fine to paint again or you could put a layer of shellac on or a layer of stain blocking primer. I like kilz or bulls eye 123. Hope that helps :)

Hi! I loved this video and all the tidbits of advice, very helpful! Thank you so much...you gave me confidence to dive in! I did just the drawer fronts of a nightstand and the brush lines really standout. I will sand that off and start over...this time I think I will water the paint down (I'm using Annie Sloan Old White) when I reapply...thoughts? Would you recommend using a generic 4" or 6" roller from the paint store on a larger surface like the sides of a dresser or armoire?
@OriginallyWorn3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I’m so glad I could give you some starting confidence! Annie Sloan paint tends to have brushstrokes. If this bothers you there’s a few things you can do. One don’t load your brush up with so much paint, put thin coats of paint instead of thick ones. Two you could water down the paint. Or three you can lightly sand with a fine grit sand sponge in between layers. All of these should give you a smoother finish. I don’t ever use a paint roller, but you certainly could if you are comfortable with that.

I typically just do soap and water where needed. Or dust with a dry lint rag. I also have seen a variety of natural products work great, like thieves cleaning spray. Mostly I would just stay away from pledge. It has been know to break down the wax after prolonged use.

Thank you for the wonderful class, you are so clear, patient and skilled! I planning to paint an unfinished table (rubberwood), and I was wondering if you would recommend staining it (with a darker color) before using the chalk paint (white) and distressing... in order to get the darker look in the distressed areas.... Thank you so much!
@OriginallyWorn3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for your nice words ❤️ yes, staining beforehand would give you a nice look to sand back to otherwise it will be too light most likely. Be sure to seal your stain before you paint. Also I would try to stick with water based topcoats and stains or be sure to give ample dry time if you use oil based. Also, alternatively you could use annie sloan dark wax to stain the wood (I have an old video on that I believe) and then paint with the Annie Sloan white paint. That is what I typically do :)

If I decide to add more paint after I have waxed a project, do I need to wipe the wax off or just paint over it?
@OriginallyWorn2 ай бұрын
Technically you can paint over Annie Sloan wax with Annie Sloan paint. (Not all brands you can do that with) how well it sticks and to what degree you are painting over it varies your results. If you are touching up a spot, slap the paint on there, let dry and wax the new paint area. If you are repainting with a solid coat and your wax has been cured for a long time, slap it on and go, then rewax. If you just waxed recently, and it’s thick, you can take mineral spirits and try to get the excess wax off before painting (you can do this at anytime, but works really well when it’s not cured) then repaint and rewax. Hope that answer helps. I know there are lots of variables in that answer, sorry! 😬❤️

How would you achieve a look that shows barely coated wood overall and paint accented heavier along trim pieces. Wish I could send a photo.

It’s hard to know exactly, but when I am guessing you mean is a try of paint washed look? If so you water the paint down in the thinner areas. Although it is best to sand those areas down some to have the paint soak into something. Sorry if that’s not what you mean 😬

Thanks for this info, does the brushes leave brush stroke? I'm new to this, trying to learn

You’re welcome! If you use less paint it does not, if you slap the paint on thick it will.

Great tutorial. Can you use a regular paintbrush to paint with?

When using two colours to distress, do you need one or two coats of the second colour?
@OriginallyWorn8 ай бұрын
Hello! It all depends on what the two colors are, and what look you are looking for. Sometimes you can get away with one, sometimes not.
