I've used those lenses too, still do on some occasions, and I agree with your statements. Especially the part where you say if you can't get a good shot with a kit lens you won't get one with an expensive lens. There are differences in quality from an L series Canon lens to a kit lens but the major difference is the L series lenses are built for harsher conditions and rougher usage. As far as image quality it's difficult if not impossible at times to tell which lens was used for an image. I've used a lot of camera brands and lenses and the same goes for all of them. Your assessment is totally correct.

Guy Photo - thank you. Yes indeed it all comes down to durability and faster apertures really. Naturally given the chance I would choose L lenses for work - and did so for years - but when the pandemic left me in financial trouble I had to sell gear to pay bills and eat unfortunately. Until better days, the EF-S kit lenses will do nicely - and the work looks the same as it always did. I just have to be mindful of weather conditions and treat the lenses a little more respectfully!

The only kit lens you mention that I have used is the 10-18mm, and I can attest, it's an absolutely fantastic lens on a 7d and 7dmkii I love your no bullshit presentation.

You said it man! I've gotten more shots with kit lenses than I ever did with primes. Kit lenses put you right on your subject while others are fumbling around doing change-outs. Sometimes you simply don't have time or real estate to "zoom with your feet", as they say. That being said, there are still legitimate uses for other lenses, but those situations are unique most of the time. Also, Kit lenses PROTECT your camera's delicate insides from dust and damage by being so versatile and allowing you to use them without having to change out so much. I use a telephoto for nature photography, but my kit lens does the heavy lifting for everything but big bokeh or low light portraits. They even do decent macro as well as great astrophotography, .

I happened upon your video on the 7D while researching a "new" camera, and I am delighted with your down-to-earth approach. Your equine photography is some of the best I have seen, and I have seen a lot, living in a horse-crazy part of the world (Alberta, Canada). Do you have a website featuring your work?

Diggie Lixx - Thank you! Yes it's worth keeping the 18-55 with you I believe - it covers a lot of ground. If you have space for one other small lens, I'd take the EF 50mm f1.8 STM as well. Then you're covered for any evening/low light shots 😊

@loneshootr3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin. Yeah the 55-250 STM is a lens I can happily recommend without hesitation - I'd be lost without mine. I used the EF 70-200 f2.8L IS USM for years (until the pandemic slaughtered my business!) and the image quality wasn't noticeably better, apart from the added subject separation that the faster aperture allows. Obviously much stronger and weather sealed, but apart from that I don't really miss it.

Want to get a good camera for my teenage daughter. She's not done well in school but she's much better on a computer than I am. I thought if I could get a good camera into her hands, who knows, she might be able to start earning with it eventually. I'm confused about what to go for. Which body and lenses to set her up with?
@jasonobrien49753 жыл бұрын
What am amazing video☺️I’ve had the 7D for about a year after taking a 10 year break and beginning to realise it’s pitfalls with ISO, I’ve just got to learn more about getting the best out of the camera. My son uses the Sony A200 with a kit lens which I used to have and takes brilliant shots. And that’s really old😂 I am investing in how to take better photos than gear. I currently own.. iPhone 11 for wide angle stuff Canon 50mm 1.8 prime And Canon 400mm 5.6L (amazing) For wildlife. I don’t think I even do the iPhone justice at the moment, but my skills are growing. Thank you for such an insightful video, it so refreshing to hear.

I haven't touched my kit lens in a while. I forgot about how fast and accurate the focus on it was. I think I switched over to all prime fixed lens because the f-stop was limited to 3.5 and I never use the zoom feature mid-take. Maybe today I'll throw my expensive lens out a window and dust the kit off.
@loneshootr3 жыл бұрын

Kit lenses work great. Fast, sharp and low light with VR. Same on the Nikon side. People need to learn photography is an art and there is more than one way to make pictures. It's the image your looking at that counts. If your not looking at the image then you're looking at the pixel-which get's kind of boring and lacks life which explains a lot about where the viewer is at. Kind of a half empty glass of water with pixel peepers.

When I see someone say: "A kit lens, good only for beginners" anywhere on YT - I know that they don't know much about photography. Expensive prime lens are for beginners - these can do everything w/o overthinking. Not kit lenses: to use properly a kit lens, one must have understanding about photography rules and subtle secrets of achieving a great picture.

Hmmm... Yes, if you cant get a good picture with a kit lense - you have to learn. But... My 18-55 II is realy not good in contrast and sharpness. Bought a Sigma 17 50 2.8 for 230 Euro. Way better.
