Thanks for the yeswelder plasma cutter. As a result I ordered that same unit directly from Yeswelder as they had a promo code giving a 30% off an already lower price, plus free shipping. I am new to the metal works, having been an accomplished woodcrafter for over 30 years. Thought it time to do something I’ve always wanted to learn. Being 78 your never to,old to learn. Thanks again I am a huge fan of your channel. Signed The Old Student!

@Bruce Pugsley thanks for your support man I appreciate it! AWESEOME score on your plasma cutter! You are going to have a ton of fun! I'm 51 and I still learn new things every day. It would be boring if we didn't. I worked with wood for a liitle while and I have to say you are going to love the transition - Hardly no dust equals a clean workshop. If you make a mistake, just add metal. Much easier than wood in my opinion. Enjoy your new purchase and thanks again for your support! 🙏👍

I have tremendous respect for people who explain how things are SUPPOSED to be done(and why), while also explaining how things CAN be done(and why not). It’s more information overall, but I think it should definitely be the norm. It’s the worst when people just tell you to do something, especially when it’s the latter, and only works in some situations, so you get to a different situation and wonder what the hell’s wrong.

Im a newbi here with my first plasma cutter, one comment when cutting out a shape or shortening a piece of metal, use the guide clamped to the part you want to keep. The guide will protect the piece from any wobbles like the demo cutting angle iron, the guide was on the wrong side and his vertical cut took out metal from where it was needed. 2nd tip. Want to cut a perfect round hole. Get a thick washer and center it over the place for the hole. Just weld it through the center to the base metal, then using the plasma cutter, go around the washer keeping gentle pressure against the washer and down on the job. The hole will be perfect if you keep the tip vertical. The washed dia plus the tip diameter equals the hole size. Its that simple.

Thank you, Brandon - extremely well presented, no waffling, no nonsense. Clear demonstration of basic operations. Not planning on cutting armour plating here, but for "normal thickness metals a small unit looks like a worthwhile investment. No angle grinder noise, and NO dust. Brandon, just a follow up on my plasma cutter. It was interesting. I have a CUT 50P that I got about three years ago. I took your ideas from you video and I found two problems. 1. The electrode was nice and tight but the electrode cover was a little loose. 2. Where the plasma cutter torch connects with the actual machine was quite loose. I tightened it up. After that, my plasma cutter works great. I haven't had any problems getting the plasma part starting up after the high frequency starts and I'm close enough to the material I'm cutting the plasma comes on and I'm cutting. So thank you very much. Watching you welding and plasma videos have been a great help in learning to fabricate metal.

Great video Brandon! To help with the consumable tip wear and easy straight lines I picked up a guide that slips over the gun tip and has 2 little wheels that lift the tip slightly away from the surface you’re cutting. Also comes with an attachable rod that you can cut perfect circles with. I am NOT in any way associated with this company but I purchased mine from Eastwood tools.

Yet another great video. I was worried you had stopped riding your motorcycle. Glad to see you are just specializing. I wasn't aware you could gouge with a "consumer level" plasma cutter. Hyperthem has a setup with special tips for gouging. Glad to see it can be done with a normal machine. I was looking at magnetic torch guides earlier today. They appear to be one of those things they charge more for just becase they can. $100 for 2 or 3 magnets and 18" of angle iron seems high to me. I think I will slap some magnets on a free after rebates Menards aluminum yard stick and try that out.

Thanks, for this wonderful guide. One important safety related PRO-TIP that I would like to pass on that is useful for both welding and plasma cutting is to take advantage of the crazy high light output available with modern LED lights using reasonable wattage to simply raise the background light level temporarily well you are working. A focused 100W LED spot light will put thousands of lumens on your work piece. So rather than cut back on the density rating of your hood or glasses in an attempt to see your line (which is very risky), INSTEAD, JUST TRY RAISING THE BACKGROUND LIGHT LEVEL USING AN ULTRA BRIGHT LED LIGHT SOURCE. I have set up a remote controllable high power light which is pre-set to illuminate the work area.ONLY. Then, when I am ready to start welding or cutting, I flip down my hood, and KICK ON THE ULTRA BRIGHT LED SPOT LIGHT. This lets me use a nice SAFE high density setting on my hood, and still see what's going on. (You will also find that It's great for getting better photography through a hood filter for your KZbin videos). Setting up the light stand prior to work only takes seconds, and is well worth it for the better vision it provides. It might seem paradoxical that brightening the work area so that it's too bright to even look at without eye protection would make it safer, but when combined with the proper level of eye protection, that's exactly what happens.

Brandon - like your vids. As a pro you spend time on safety issues, which is admirable. Your vid is a "beginners guide". As careful as you were to go into safety issues you were not careful with your placement of the ground and feed lines of your plasma torch. In fact at 26:00 27:00 you were gouge cutting and throwing showers of sparks all over your leads and your plasma machine. At the first plasma cut too. Your spark flow was right onto the torch lead on the floor. Just like oxy/ace cutting you don't want those sparks flying all over your shop. Maybe amend video to also instruct a beginner to keep their leads, and anything else that could be damaged or catch fire, out of the way of the sparks. Hate to be critical, but where those sparks go is VERY important. Remember, I may not be a beginner, but you're attracting beginners with your vid title. (signed: plasma police ;-)

Hey Brandon that clamp you addressed as the ground clamp is called a working Clamp not a ground clamp. It is actually a positive voltage on the clamp relative to the electrode of the torch. The cut- 55DS plasma cutter uses the SG-55 AG-60 consumables for anyone wanting to know how to identify and what to order. Another suggestion is I use a two prong stand off that gives a 1/8 clearance between my torch tip and the material I am cutting it really does make the drag tip last longer. The wire stand offs do not perform as well as the two prong stand off. Very good video! 😁🛫
@BrandonLund3 жыл бұрын
Oddly enough the manufacturer refers to it as ground also. Specifically they call it an earth cable which is synonomous with ground.

Very good video, you are a great teacher. I have a question about plasma cutting and I can't find an answer. Maybe you can help me. I have a 200 amp TIG welder, can I convert it to a plasma cutter? Or is that impossible? I am looking forward to your answer.
@BrandonLund2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! As far as converting the machine to a plasma cutter, I dont believe it's possible without completely rewiring the machine.

I had trouble seeing when arc welding so now I use a bright spot light aimed at my work piece and that’s helps a lot.

Great information. Want to point out that that 15a/120v plug adapteris not built to handle 50a 240v, might get squishy… Tks for the video!

Very nice video sir how loud is this compared to an angle grinder? Please let me know sir thank you. 🙏

It's a little less loud I think but it's also at a different tone / pitch.

Yes. Bed frame material is great stuff, but it is a killer on bandsaw blades. You have the same bandsaw setup as me😊

Great tutorial! Really like your Chanel! I have a question about the different tip sizes? I got one of the Amazon cut 50 plasma cutter which I haven’t tried yet but got it to cut a sheet of 1/8” steel sheet in 1ft sections for the sides of a trailer I’m building. I decided to order a few extra consumables and noticed there are different sizes available (.030” and .045”). I ordered the .030” and once I compared with the ones that it came with, realized they are smaller. What’s the difference between the two different sizes? Looked around and can’t seem to find an answer… Edit: after watching your video again I see you mentioned that bigger tips for higher power. Should I not use the .030” tips on 220v?
@BrandonLund25 күн бұрын
You will be fine with the smaller tips on 220. They might not cut as clean or last as long but they will do the job. The bigger tips on 220 have a larger opening so they tend to cut a little fast and last a little longer. It's not a big difference thought.

Great video! I have a PrimeWeld Cut60 (great machine) and I'm new to plasma cutting. I have learned that I really suck at freehand cutting. I've been tempted to get a CNC table.

Thanks man! There is a small learning curve but keep at it. Freehand is hard for me too.

@@BrandonLund I try to use a straight edge as much as I can just like you showed. I'm going to get me a pair of tinted glasses like you mentioned.

I find I must use welding gloves because the arc gives off a bunch of heat. My welding helmet goes down to a shade 5, so that’s what I use - which comes in real handy when it decides to shower me in molten steel. Also wear a full length leather apron so the steel doesn’t burn through my jeans.

Got this exact same plasma cutter, still on the original consumable. Needs about 4 cfm @ 90psi to cut continuously but it's got a duty cycle of 60% (can run for 6 of every 10 minutes) of use.
