Hi Blaine, one of my subscribers recommended I check out your channel as I'm about to tackle a similar job. Have been binge watching this evening, you have a brilliant channel! I have a question if you don't mind: I am going to be laying thermalite blocks in a small window opening. I will follow your render mix advice of 5:1 scratch then 6:1 top coat. However, I am also going to be pebbledashing the wall to blend in with existing, and then painting it in with the rest. Is that mix ok for pebbledash? And should I use waterproofer in the mix? Cheers keep up the great work, Keith

@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate!! Thanks for your kind words and respect for your channel - that’s a lot of subscribers!! Fair play. The problem with Thermalite blocks is that they pull the moisture from the render at a very fast pace which might be difficult when Pebble dashing. I’ll be honest, just avoid Thermalites if you can. Horrible blocks to render onto and they often crack because the cement is stronger than the block itself. Just use Medium density cement blocks if you can. A much better product with less issues. Hope this helps my friend and Good luck 🍀

really enjoy your vids and I am going to try rendering in near future to cover some terrible brickwork. concerning the drip bead fitted just above the DPC and then near the end of vid you rendered below the drip bead. how does that not breach the DPC as I will have similar situation. Any advice much appreciated
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 жыл бұрын
Give it a go mate. Because the plastic beads separate the 2 levels of render. It will stop any damp from rising because the plastic acts like a DPC barrier - it can’t travel through plastic 👍

Another Brill video. What are your thoughts on garden walls that get fully rendered i.e. Top too with no coping? I love the look without coping but will the render hold up? Obviously a slight fall on the top would help.

Wetting down the day before is good thing to do...just before you go home..also do you use any additives?..ie waterproofer in first coat or plastiser?..or as you said do you just go with 'hydrated lime' in both coats to fatten it up and rely on the wetting down of scratch coat to hold it back a bit? Regards P.s..am a plasterer from 11 years old..am 53 now..bit allways keen to learn
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! Great hearing from a pro like yourself and thanks for the suggestion of wetting down. I use waterproofers in the scratch coats (250ml per bag of cement) and I use Feb Rendermix in the top coat. It’s great stuff…plasticiser, waterproofers in an all in one package. Lovely to work with and despite the 2 apparently cancelling each other out, it works really well with the hydrated lime. Hope this helps and thank you for watching…all the best!

at the risk of sounding a bit dim (was told that there's no such thing as bad question) you don't fill the stop bead with the scratch coat? So, youre looking to fill about 10mm of a 15mm stop bead with the scratch coat? A close up view of this would be cool 😎

When you render you apply and flatten with a straight edge a whole wall bit by bit, do you then go back to the start and begin the floating process in one hit? The reason i ask is because i always wondered about time, is there a limit to how long you can leave a section of wall before you need to drop everything and start floating what you have applied on the wall so far? Like in the case of a big wall face, in direct sunlight maybe for example? Thanks Blaine great videos.
