Welcome to the 4th class of Beginners Yoga Module A! (link to previous classes below). It's a wonderfully constructed 12 part course inspired by the magnificent genius of B.K.S Iyengar and translated as 'purely' as possible for you here. It's really worth starting at the beginning as each teaching builds on the last. New poses, new alignments, new ways of understanding.
Practice each class 3X a week and then move onto the next. I promise that if practiced as suggested you will experience beautiful structure, strength and fluidity that will add in infinite empowering ways to daily life and living. Hope that those of you who have wanted to follow a course and feel a sense of evolution in their practice will join me here. Please do let me know your experience! Made with love and light 🌹 Cat
Note - During menstruation please avoid Core Work (Urdhva Prasarita Padasana Cycles), Strong Twists (Parivrtta Trikonasana) and replace the final Viparita Karani Resting Inversion with classical Savasana (the entire body including legs resting on the floor).
Thanks for being here ✨

Guru Cat, so sweet of you to respond! I am so touched. Virtuous even when virtual! I have a bad back but was a classical bharatanatyam dancer for years. That plus maybe my genetics have taken a toll on my lower back. I would love love to do back care yoga... but I find only one short module from you. Do you suppose you will post a few more flows for back pain sufferers like me? I’d so love to mix the practice up. Class 4 in Module A - the scissoring of the legs and also the new trikonasana pose have potentially caused a flare up. This is my guess. So I will go back and stay @ Class 2 or 3 perhaps until the back recovers🙏🏼
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 4 жыл бұрын
Dearest Priya - my DEEPEST apologies for this late response. KZbin is excellent at letting me know when there is a new message but terrible at letting me know when someone has written back and it is on an existing 'thread' so to speak! Which is very frustrating. Because a big source of joy for me on this channel is the communication aspect. So please please accept my humblest of 'sorrys'!!! I've only come cross your response by 'accident' today otherwise I would never have known. So you were a dancer. And perhaps also genetics. And of course the natural ageing process of dropping organs... They lose fusion with the poor lower back which in turn causes pain. In terms of practice - I would love to create a back care programme for you. It's a wonderful idea. But I would love to know a little more about what you can and can't do... And in terms of this course - have you tried 2 blankets under the lower back when you do the core work sequence. This should tilt the pelvis sequence enough to make a difference. And if it doesn't - again - please do let me know. I would greatly appreciate learning more through you. Hope that you will respond. As a new message so that I am sure Youtbe will announce it. In the meantime all the best to you and your husband. With blessings. X Cat

I'm in a jungle shack in Hawaii with terrible internet and have been unable to open the video to see what the new pose is and am thus unable to give precise advice. If you have a moment feel free to send me another message with the name of the pose (or description) and I'll respond. Hello Cat! Thank so much for all your yoga teachings with techniques. I am starting with the Beginners class Module A. I did class 3 & 4 for two weeks each.I still struggle to put my lower back on the floor when I do vertical stretch. There is always an arch. What can I do to hit my lower back to the ground?
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 2 жыл бұрын
Good Morning and congratulations on starting this journey Naina!! You will feel transformed in new ways by the end of it. Meanwhile, it's important to know that it takes time to feel one's body and time to change its habits. So for instance with the arch of your lower back - the fact that you are noticing it is excellent! This is the beginning of change and it will lead you to develop more holistic sensitivity as you explore how to adjust until the lower back feels flatter. (In this case learning how to move the buttocks and sacrum towards the heels) However do not feel that you must wait for the lower back to completely flatten before moving to the next class. Instead; take the time needed to absorb each new class (you mentioned 2 weeks, which is excellent!) and then keep going. Some poses will take longer to 'get' and some will flow more easily. But at the end of the day it will all come together because that is how the body works. Meanwhile, as the practice makes you aware of ways in which you hold yourself, take these 'ah-ha' moments off the mat and into your daily life. For instance, watch the over arching of your lower back when you are sitting. Try to be mindful in that area, engaging the pelvic floor and lifting the pubic bone to combat the dropping of the lumbar. Similarly when sleeping, you could (lying on back) fall asleep with a pillow under the backs of knees which will help ensure that you are able to really move the buttocks towards the feet direction and that your lower back is thus supported by the mattress (not arching). These small adjustments may feel inconsequential but they are ripples of positive change. Hope this helps! Please feel free to connect with questions anytime. Sending courage and faith. X Cat

Dear Cat, thank you so, so much for your amazing online courses. They’re really changing a lot in my life! On my way home from work, I’m already looking forward to going to your classes. I am really just a beginner and therefore the beginners classes are absolutely fantastic at this moment and I’m recommending your channel to all friends interested. Now I have a question. I have a slight pain in my left shoulder (from trying iyengar yoga in a studio a couple of year times, six years ago) and some of the asanas stretching my arms up/ back refresh this pain. Then I didn’t go to the doctor and after a lot of time the shoulder was ok again. Is there an intelligent way to handle this shoulder practicing for example Urdhva prasarita Padasana..thank you very much in advance, David ❤️
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 3 жыл бұрын
Hello David - great to meet you here and thanks for connecting. The shoulder as you well know is a sensitive and tricky area. It takes a while to heal and in the healing process it is definitely best not to push it. When bringing the arms back in UPP try putting a bolster (or 2 as needed) so that the arms are lifted. Also be sure that the upper outer arms are moving towards the sky and that the humerus bone is coming into the shoulder socket. Also in Trikonasana etc. pay extra attention to your tendencies in the top arm. Often we over extend that arm because it makes us feel that we are twisting more. If you think that this might be your case counteract this tendency by bringing the top arm slightly forward and then working the twist from the belly button so that the action stays in the trunk. Hope this helps and if not - or if other issues arise - please feel free to reach out. I'm always so pleased to support this Module experience. It is a beautiful journey!! ☀️💛 X Cat

Hello Cat, Hope you are doing great! From today I have started doing class 4. I want to share my happiness(update) while going through this journey. Initially when I started using second strap around my ankle it was extremely painful but after finishing my 3rd lesson (I did this lesson for 8 days as was not very good in few poses) the pain has gone very down. I can say 2 out of 10😊😊 I have a question about core workout. Q -- I am still not very comfortable doing the core workout ☹ Doing the 30 degree angle is really uncomfortable. Sometimes I couldn't hold it for more then 3 to 4 seconds. Sometimes having lower tummy pain.Is my core weak? (Just a background, I have 2 kids both natural birth) Could the pregnancy be the reason of not having the core function properly. I also have bulge on my tummy which I really want to fix as I have lost most of my pregnancy weight but the tummy is not going down. I know spot reduction is a myth and I never wanted to learn yoga for focusing only on reducing body weigh. I want to make my body strong and healthy. Please let me know how I can proceed with these core workouts. Thanks in advance! Namaste 🙏

Hello dear Neha and thanks for taking the time to reach out. First of all congratulations on your discipline and commitment! I know that it's hard work in so many different ways but I promise that you will eventually feel transformed both mentally and physically! It's wonderful that you took the time to really assimilate the 3rd class as was needed by your vehicle. This is the sign of wise intelligence. And I'm very happy to hear that your foot pain has reduced to a 2 out of 10! Soon you will wonder if it ever hurt at all. Furthermore, by now your body will be beginning to trust that you mean 'business' and it will start to open up to you. Like a plant that is being watered and given sunlight. Just be consistent and everything will blossom as it should. As for the core - I understand. Especially after 2 children. Yes it sounds as if your core is weak, but you are not alone!! So many of us have weak cores. And 30° is really hard! The good news is that - with absolute certainty - our cores can 100% be made strong and useful again. You just have to give it time. Consistency. Patience. And muscular pain is entirely normal when you are waking this area up again. Don't worry if you can't hold those poses very long. Just keep igniting that area and the strength will grow. It might be helpful to add another blanket under the lower back to relieve some of the strain. But if you have lower back pain please let me know! Referring to the bulge in your tummy - as long as it is not a hernia - you can trust that with the practice it will diminish. Ageing and childbirth have the effect of making one's inner organs drop forward and down. They 'separate' from the lower back bringing weakness there. As we begin to get in touch with these forgotten areas - eventually - with practice - the organs will be taught how to lift again - and how to naturally move in and up - fusing with the lower back and bringing great stability and inner health. It is a journey. Please keep sharing yours with me when and as needed. Blessings fellow yogi! X Cat 💫

@@YogawithCat Hello Cat, I would like to repeat "You are God sent ANGLE to me"🧡 . The way you answer my questions I feel like talking to someone very close👩 Thanks for listening and giving such a detailed response. Answering your query, NO I don't feel any back pain while or after doing the core workout its just holding the 30 degree pose is not very comfortable. However when I started doing lesson 1 even 60 degree was not that comfortable but not it is. So you are right looks like I need to be consistent in my practice. I will definitely update you (Hope I am not bothering you). Hope to get better and better each day! Namaste🙏

Hi Cat. I am loving your course and so grateful for all your direction. Can I ask a question? When I am facing the blocks with one foot in front of the other. How far apart width-wise are my feet meant to be}. Ie Are they hip width apart or are they closer together ie more in line with each other. I can’t quite see in the video as we are looking from the side. Thank you again. This is my first attempt to embrace yoga following a stress fracture that is preventing me running for 6 months and I’m hooked. Fx

Hello Felicity. So wonderful to meet you and know that we are working together. I'm super happy that you're finding healing and strengthening here. The practice will support your future running in so many beautiful ways! 💛 As for your question - each foot is in line with each hip so they are not directly in line with each other. Apologies for the camera angle which limits certain crucial views. Please always feel free to connect anytime! And a big congratulations for undertaking this course. There is also a Beginners Module B that follows this and then a whole range of Intermediate Modules too! About a year and a bit of training if so desired. Happy practicing! x Cat 💫

Good evening Guruji I have restarted and after 5 times each class every alternate day, I have reached here. Sadly, I cannot even balance myself in the Parivarta Trikonasana now and the wobbling makes me almost fall. I managed to reach the block, but I cannot hold. Any guidance to achieve the balance and the twist, please

Hello dearest Sadaf. Apologies for such a late response. I have been travelling out of wifi zone ... In response to your question - first of all please be assured that you are not alone. PT is a tricky pose indeed! I suggest using a higher block (such as a chair or stool). I am also including a link to another class that will help you to understand it better 1 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/inSxnqWreq6ffrM Also - Parivrtta Supta Padangusthasana is an excellent pose to do everyday to help prepare the vehicle for this pose. Here is a link to a class that covers the Supta Padangusthasana Cycle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5qpXnutbs-kf9U Hope this helps and keep me posted! 🤍

Hi, Cat. When doing the pose using blocks, when right foot's forward, bringing left arm across connecting forearm with front shin, I find when using the blocks I can't seem to do this without bending my arm. However, if I remove the blocks it works and the crossing arm can be straight and connect with shin. I'm assuming it's fine to do the pose without blocks. If this is not correct and I'm not understanding, please let me know. Thanks, Cynthia

Absolutely correct Cynthia! I keep the blocks in for those who might not yet be able to reach but if you can reach the floor the pose become easier (in a way) because the arm and shin can truly connect. Congratulations!! 💯 X Cat

Question: Do I tighten the glutes during Long Vertical Stretch? Thank you for your beautiful offering and generosity. Peace and health :-)
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 4 жыл бұрын
hello dear Anat - good question. The action of the buttocks in long vertical stretch is this: each heel connects to each buttock. The heels are pulling the buttocks towards the heels which moves the sacrum in the direction we want. Each buttock is indeed slightly tightened but it is a different type of contraction than tightening the glutes towards each other. Best way to describe it would be a contraction with a very specific direction. Let me know if this helps. Or not! And thank you for your blessings. 🙏 🌟 💖

Dear Cat, when I put the strap over the ankles tight my sitting bones are outside the heels. Is that what is needed? or is that too tight? Thanks for your classes I really like to go back to ur beginners modules and getting the details again.
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat Жыл бұрын
Hello Irene. Yes the sitting bones are - at a certain point - wider than the heels. The heels can be used to keep them well spread. However there is also such a thing as 'too tight' so I suggest trying afew variations and seeing what feels good but still 'instructive' to the feet. Hope this helps and well done for revisiting the foundations. We always hear new details. ☯🤍🙏

That was first class again after a long break. I think I had a strain of covid in-between. My main question today is around the foot alignment; when you say the heel needs to be in line with the front of the arch (do you mean the middle of the arch of the back leg foot?) Do you have any diagrams or anything you can link? Or any other links that show this clearly? I think I do it correct, but obviously its a foundation point, and so I wanted to clarify.
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 3 жыл бұрын
Good Morning dear Radha! Welcome back!! 💜 As for the foot alignment in this Module - it is the front heel to the front of the arch. More towards the big toe part of the arch than the middle. This will shift later but for now is important to help really absorb the front buttock. Let me know if this is clear now? Have a wonderful weekend and am delighted that you are feeling better and are back on track! 🌈🌺☀️
@Gabbagousch
@Gabbagousch 3 жыл бұрын
@@YogawithCat This helps. The clarity is useful, and the front buttock point interesting. I noticed today whilst doing the restorative, and with you saying lift the arches up, my feet were more or less flat against the matt - there was no arch, not visibly to my eyes (my head was low so I could see them well). I can somatically feel a sensation of lifting the arch sometimes, but visually they look flat as hell - is that normal?
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gabbagousch don't worry about normal or abnormal. Just go with the somatic experience of lifting until - one day - the outer expression of that is made manifest in your unique way.

I am unable to balance on the parivtta trikonasana. My legs keep wobbling and the back heel doesn't reach the floor, as a result I am not just unsteady but can't grip the inner knee of the back leg
@YogawithCat
@YogawithCat 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Sadaf! Parivrtta Trikonasana is indeed a tricky pose. Try putting a rolled blanket underneath your back heel so that the heel has something to press into. This will help with the steadiness. Also - on the days that you don't practice make sure to do some Supta Padangusthasanas lying down on the floor with a belt. This will help open the backs of the legs which will also help your Parivrtta Trikonasana. The important thing to remember is that there are always some poses that take longer than others to flower. Don't let this discourage you at all. Just be detached and persistent. It is coming! Hope this helps. Take good care. C. 💫

@@kartikabhandeyar124 Hi again - if you've been feeling comfortable I would follow your intuition and body intelligence - but absolutely avoid all core and twists in the 1st Trimester and use blocks or chair support in strenuous Standing Poses to lighten the intensity. Basically the first Trimester is all about letting the baby settle in comfortably. 2nd Trimester is different. As is the 3rd... As for the practice I sent you - this was the practice my teacher gave me when I was pregnant. Ideally one would practice it from the screen a few times, writing down the recipe of poses for oneself and then eventually practicing it on ones own within the time frame that one has available. My version is long because I have to make sure to include all the details. Just to conclude - pregnancy is such an individual experience so I have to be cautious in giving advice especially through the screen. In the meantime will work on 2nd Trimester and 3rd Trimester so that you have the complete set. 🌺
