So much truth you gave away. Not all kicks are the same, vocals, bass and all other instruments. So you can't eq them the exact same way even if they fall into the same category. Thanks for your expertise as always. Highly appreciated 🙏

I've noticed that if you bring the fader up on something so it sticks out and grabs the listener's attention -- you can quickly bring the fader down, but the listener's attention will remain on that thing for some amount of time, even though it's tucked back down in the mix. I feel like Bob Clearmountain is amazing at using tricks like this to sort of sculpt the listener's emotional experience of the song. The LAST thing he wants is for everything to remain clear and equal

a good example would be muse uprising. just listen to that bass in the intro, its distorted layer is loud and proud, but the moment the arrangement kicks in, it drops. but the impression is still there

100%! We talk about this a bit in the episode of rock music mixing. Once you establish a sound as big, it doesn’t necessarily need to stay that way for the whole done to be remembered and experienced that way. -Justin

Andy Wallace does that brilliantly too, just riding the faders by section, by lick, by note 👌🏼

You don’t always need a bus comp is a big one I think. I’ve released many recordings over the 10 years. Some college radio play, some blog write ups, interviews but I’m seriously small fry. The biggest thing I’d get caught up on is that my songs start usually by building on something Ive already made and enjoy that has plenty of processing already on it. I used to undo the processing but realized that’s part of what I liked about it. This presented a problem for my mixbus. How to add new vocals, more guitars, etc. to tracks with heavily processed (sometimes slammed by ozone) stems and still have it make sense. Bus comps are not your friend on mixes like this. The solution for this type of mix is I literally just use only Pro-L2 on my mixbus, treating it as if it were an SSL bus comp.

Hey, Justin, if in the end you don't know what to do with Jason, you could do the mixcon of the song Vette Motor, it would be a bomb 🔥

everything you say is totally 100% accurate. But as it happens all the time. How do you do when your client claims everything that makes a bad mix? Merci à vous

@@SonicScoop Thank you I watched this important video, and that's exactly what I'm doing. I ask for style references and above all, as the artist prefers the voice. wet or dry, load or sweet… when the voice is ok the rest of the mix becomes easier for me. but sometimes not :)encore merci

And if course, despite millions of these mixing and mastering videos one thing remains the truth. A crap song is a crap song. A great song is a great song. Maybe start there? 😎
