I started guitar in 1980 and in 1982 bought my first metal method lessons. I got his metal theory and metal licks tapes. My playing advanced at a extremely fast rate with the lessons. The only complaint I have is I wish the lessons were around in 1980 when I first started because i would have been 2 years ahead of the game! Back then these lessons were a game changer for rock/metal players. We did not have the internet and KZbin.
@DougMarks18 күн бұрын
I love hearing how my lessons helped you out. I know it was a game changer for metal and rock guitarists back then because (as you mentioned) there was no alternative.... except for maybe Mel Bay and was that really an alternative. It didn't work for me.

Literally at 8:40 you start playing power chords and anyone at that point should enjoy the beautiful, delicious sound of rock and roll ! Oh man I loved these on VHS back in the 90’s. Good to see you dropping some content here! My buddy and I started your Metal Method courses but he dropped out after the first lesson - I think you’d asked us not to move to lesson 2 until we’d memorized all the notes on the fretboard, lol. I didn’t quit but I didn’t memorize them all, unfortunately. That was a daunting task for those of us that didn’t even now how to plug in a guitar. I haven’t thought about that in a long time, great memories.

That's a great story. I was asking people to do something that most guitarists aren't able to do after 20 years. Live and learn. I have a survey that I ask my students and others to fill out. Only 15% of those that filled out the survey can instantly identify notes without hesitation.

Yeah, I did okay with that plug I put on the end of my videos. I wasn't interested in the money as much as I was interested in proving to them that my students were buying their guitars. I was introduced to them by Steve Vai and initially they weren't interested in me endorsing their products. It didn't take long for them to realize that I was selling their guitars. That led to them offering my VHS tapes in their stores. That was very lucrative. I still love their guitars and play them daily. Mark Kiesel is a really good guy.

I love this! I used to see your ads in magazines in the mid 80s. I have one question though. I see you have a floyd, but are able to tune from the tuners? I thought you had to tune from the little knobs on the bridge. Sorry for the dumb question, I’ve just recently gotten my first floyd equipped guitar.
@DougMarks17 күн бұрын
That is not dumb at all. Things like that are so second nature to me that I forget that some people are new to the technology. You may have noticed that you sometimes screw the screws all the way down or even have them almost unscrewed (up). That's from correcting flat and sharp. Adjust all of the screw to a middle position. Then go to the nut and use an allen wrench (hex wrench) to completely loosen the screws . Since it's unlocked you can tune with the tuning keys. Tune all strings, tighten the screws at the nut and fine tune at the bridge with the tuning screws. Hope this helps.
@timmoore17317 күн бұрын
@ thank you! Yes that helps! I’ve been afraid of using floyds for so long because I always heard they can be a pain.

Is that white guitar a Charvel? With Seymore Duncan pickups?
@DougMarks17 күн бұрын
The bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan and the other two pickups are Lace Sensor. They don't pick up as much noise as other single coil pickups do and have killer tone. The guitar and neck were handmade by a student of mine, Henry Switzer. It was a gift from Henry.

I’ve played professionally, been on tour with world famous artists, recorded notable records, etc… Doug Marks taught me music theory in the 80’s through his mail-order lessons!!! 😂❤🤘

Yep, and after that Guitar World, Guitar for the Practicing Musician and others. Magazines were popular back then. Some months I would reach 500,000 guitarists. It was pretty remarkable back then. Today all it takes is an iPhone and KZbin. it doesn't hurt if you're a beautiful girl with most of your breasts exposed and you can kind of play guitar.
