Great demo Dave. Thank you for continuing your help to beginners. Your demos have taught me so much over the last few years. Even in my times of frustration your attitude and pleasant way of teaching brought me inspiration as it still does today. Im sure it will as well to many other beginners.

Amen to that. I think watercolorists (if not all artists) are lifelong students of their craft.

Thanks Dave. Terrific demo, both your brush work and your explanations. Even if my painting has a ways to go, at least I have attained same rusty black clips 😁. Also, love the accent over here in NYC. Merry Christmas.

Happy New Year Dave. I’ve left the hake alone for a while but your excellent simple but effective landscape has inspired me to use this challenging tool again. Thanks very much, Derek.

DELMOVIE I too have gotten pretty frustrated with this brush. However, Dave inspired me to continue on as well. He does explain it oh so well, and he will take the time to answer any questions and walk you through step by step. Check put the demo he did titled Lakeland Demo for Stacey, where he explains everything at a slow pace that is very easy to understand (Nice to meet you by the way, I'm Stacy) .. Best wishes, and I hope you continue on with this very versatile and amazing brush! I will post the link to the video for you if I can figure how.

Dave please can I ask you about your pallet. I see you've squeezed out your colour onto what looks like some kind of tray.bhow do you stop the paint chipping into small bits and going all over the place? or do your paints not crack and chip off. do you think it depends on the brand of colour or the tray into which they are squeezed? or does it have something to do with the paints being left untouched for while through lack of use? kine chipped off, got mixed up and it was a complete dusaster

My "palette" is a shallow plastic food tray. When not in use I keep the paint moist by placing a damp piece of towel in an A3 document holder from any stationary supplier, or e Bay. Nothing special, Birgees. :)

A lovely painting demonstration with the hake brush. I haven't seen this type of brush used with such delicate touches before, I mainly use it for large brush strokes for painting skies, just as you did in the beginning. Is there any particular quality to look for in a hake brush? Or is it just pick your size and off you go? I think my two hake brushes are goat hair, which seems a bit course at times - maybe that's a quality issue or perhaps they are supposed to be like that. I love how you gently remind us of key principles, such as the atmospheric perspective, warmer colours towards the foreground, avoid centrally placed focal point, how to use the tip of the brush etc. PS. Relative newbie here, so not quite sure what I'm doing half the time...

Thanks for your comments, Mark, much appreciated. As for hake brushes, I only buy the Ron Ranson medium and large ones. They are made from goat hair and do split, and when they do, just dip the edge in water and bring the hairs together on your palette. Happy painting. :)

So I just got my first Ron Ranson hake brush. Finding it a bit difficult at the moment as it seems to be always too wet. So any advice on how to control the wetness in the brush? Maybe it's just down to practice? Or do I need to clean the brush a lot as it's new?
@joegriffin5851
@joegriffin5851 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I've now found another of your videos where you say something about what to do when the hairs split into smaller bunches. I think you said to wet it more and I'll try that.

I see a lot of people use mostly dry brush techniques with the hake brush like here. Is it also good for holding a lot of water and doing light washes?
@DaveUsherArt
@DaveUsherArt 5 жыл бұрын
Like all brushes, only practise will inform you as to the amount of water that makes a good wash. Also, the paper surface must be taken into account, callmedeno. :)
