Behavioral Regression-He missed his meds

Due to a miscommunication and change in morning routine, we missed giving Kaidale his meds for a couple of days. Once I realized what happened, it was an easy explanation for why he had some behavioral regressions. Although I was extremely mad at myself for forgetting his medicine, it was a clear reminder as to how much benefit he gets from being on the medicine he is on and how impactful it is for his life.

Until someone has walked a mile in your shoes... No one knows what’s best for Kaidale except you. We see a tiny bit of who he is, you know everything about him. Trust your gut and don’t be bothered with the “know it alls.”

I'm on several psychiatric meds (as well as meds for physical issues). If I miss my meds, I definitely feel it and notice a difference. I'm so happy that the Prozac is working for Kaidale. Take it easy on yourself Kaitlin, it can happen to anyone ❤️

Lesson learned and you are back on track with his med schedule. I am so glad the water company sent you bottles. It is hard to drink plain water when you are used to sugary drinks. Great you are trying.

Please don't listen to the haters that say he needs discipline. And feel bad for the meds, if someone has PTSD and has anxiety they have meds like him how is his anxiety any different, he's a kid he can't tell you when he needs meds and when his anxiety is bad. Don't beat yourself up we all forget things and we all give our kids medication when they need the to feel better and he's no different. And it's not a regression you and he are still nailing it each and every day. Oh and I love that you were wearing the penguin t-shirt I bought. I soooo thought you'd only wear that at SeaWorld and with Kaidale. Love it 💙❤️💙❤️

I totally understand why you made medication The Last Resort. I did that too with myself and I have mental illnesses. Without medication I cannot function properly. With medication my life is totally different. So would I always like to use natural remedies? yes, but do those work all the time? no. About the water I don't know what kind of water you were giving him before but I noticed there's a filter in the sports bottle he got. And that right there will make the water tastes so much better even before you put the flavoring in I'm sure. I'm so glad he's drinking water that's so awesome. Thank you again for your candidness and openness to talking about what autism can look like with or without meds. Have a wonderful day.

As a caregiver, you are always in a state of high alert. Watch out for this, remember that, don’t lose control yourself, and on and on . . . . We are not perfect and the occasional slip-up is inevitable. Your way of living and your outlook becomes different from that of people who do not have the same challenges. You and parents/caregivers like you are the angels among us. If you never made a mistake, there would be something wrong with you 😊.

Kaitlyn, you’re doing an amazing job. Life happens sometimes. But you figured it out. And its something you can “fix”. I think we can all see Kaidale is such a sweet happy boy. I certainly can. It’s not for any of us to judge or “offer suggestions” for discipline. The day was a win overall. He drank an entire bottle of water!

Don't give yourself a hard time you are a wonderful momma. There is a major difference between a bratty child that lacks discipline and then there's situations where the child cannot help it, I have never seen kaidale as a child that is bad or that lacks discipline. He is a wonderful boy.

Bless your heart and Kaidale's for what you all had to go thru, but I REALLY HOPE you can quickly forgive yourself & move on, as it could happen to anyone. We are all human, sometimes there are SO MANY things to remember and sometimes changes can throw us off. The important thing is you put your mind to work on what was going on, & caught and corrected it & I'm pretty sure Kaidale will get back to where he was in no time. Quite the learning experience and sometimes we need things like that to happen to remind us of how far things have come, improved, whatever. So, please, from this moment forward, give yourself grace and mercy and continue being the very best mom you can be and always are😉💞HUGS💞

Use it as a learning experience and now knowing what he would be like without the medications. You are able to stress the importance of them to his caregivers if they need to remember to give them to him and also if they are forgotten or missed/ need to be skipped again for some reason you know what to expect.

Stop with the mum guilt, like you said its a bump but its a learning time too. Yes a morning or day can be different but idea before leaving the house run through check list of things that needed to be done. Eg staying at mums do i have my uniform packed, do I enough snack for a long car journey, medication, vitamins etc. From another vlog you said you wanted to be more organised, when I felt like that I got myself a white board and before bed, I would write what I need to do the next day then cross through them when done to feel proud of doing them. ( helps with my anxiety) I understand im on my own so very different to a single mum ( which you are amazing) but thought I would share things that work for me and maybe could help you. Thank you for being so open with the world sharing your life. X

That wouldn’t happen in one day of not taking the medication, but feeling off or not quite yourself and then not being able to vocalize that or even realize why I’m sure is a struggle but like some have said could be reassuring as a parent that he does actually NEED the medicine. As a parent your child being on something like that can be devastating and you would question it over and over

Maybe you have already tried this, but my son drinks this and I actually like it too. I guess it’s just a flavored water or sparkling water I don’t know, but it’s called ICE. I love the black cherry and it comes in several flavors it’s not real expensive and it’s pretty tasty because I ordinarily do not like a flavored water but this just taste like a juice and I believe it has 0 cal. Just a thought. When you buy it it doesn’t even look like a water I don’t even know if it’s in the water section. But it sure is tasty.

As an adult diagnosed w/ ADD, when I forget to take my medicine....I won’t necessarily notice BUT my husband can spot it immediately. The first time it happened, I thought he was attempting to use my ADD as a weapon & way to “win” until I checked my weekly med box and noticed I had missed three days worth😳! When a chemical imbalance is noted & medication properly prescribed the difference in behaviors is night and day.

I think that was the one reassuring part of the situation, knowing exactly what caused the problem. And not stressing/scratching my head trying to figure out what’s wrong or why he’s upset. So much gray areas with autism, it was reassuring having a black and white answer to the situation.

Don’t worry you’ll never do it again, he will be his happy self in no time! I have a question about his school, do they enroll based on skills/abilities or other factors? I am considering an autism school versus a public school placement for my toddler. I am really leaning towards a autism school even though they are considered “restricted environment”. Can you please make a video talking about the issues regarding school and why you chose Kaidale’s school environment?
@Kaitlin_and_Kaidale

For me it was knowing that Kaidale needed a higher level of care than he would ever receive at a public school. I knew in a private school, or at least the one I chose, there would be lower student to teacher ratios. And yes, there is a variety of different classes based on what your focus is for your child. All have IEPs of course. But I would just encourage you to tour a few private schools and your instincts will help you make the right decision❤️

@@Kaitlin_and_Kaidale thank you so much for the advice, I’ll definitely try touring some! My little boy sometimes has some aggressive behaviors when he feels upset or hyper and I’m still unsure of how big or small the issues will impact him in the future but watching your videos have helped me see that medication isn’t scary if he needs them and will only improve his quality of life as you stated, so thank you Kaitlin!!!

I feel this so much! My son loved water as a tiny guy! But then it all abruptly stopped out of no where! He's getting better as he gets older but he still will NOT take his meds with water! It has to be ANYTHING BUT water!😝 and don't get down on yourself. I've forgotten meds plenty of times in 8yrs of him taking them! It makes for VERY rough days or nights. But it happens and you just struggle through! I'm sure it won't be the last time either!😬🤷😂
