I get confused about when to read the ‘On’ And when to read the ‘Kun’. So much to learn!

I learned through WaniKani that the "On" reading is usually when the kanji is combined with one or two other kanji to form a word in the sentence. But the "kun" is mainly used if the kanji is either on its own as a vocab word in the sentence, or forming a word with hiragana letters.
