Particularly loved how highly he thinks of himself, refreshing to hear somebody at the top of their competition of choice actually acknowledge how high up they are on the mountain. Also pretty epic he plays/follows Melee, even more to like. I'd love to see him make some more KZbin videos but I hope he enjoys his time away from the game/community for now.

This is the first time I've got to hear other people enjoy the French Pomemon names. French is my second language and I've been playing through the Pokemon games in French since Gen 6, so there's a few gens where I don't really know the English names. But there's few people I know who speak French let alone play Pokemon in it, so it's great to hear appreciation for the localization. I've gone back and played through some of the games in English and for the majority of the games I've much preferred the French localization choices to the English ones.

Wanted to chime in on the topic of variance and how fighting games, Pokemon, and card games differ (which you two tangentially touched on). Fighting games have an execution barrier that makes them naturally variable-even the very best players can't be perfectly consistent, and they can have bad days. That results in fighting game players actually having a similar set of complaints ("if I was just executing better and didn't drop that combo, I would have won!") to the RNG complaints of Pokemon players.

I want to say the bit about fusions is basically what Digimon does. Most of the time, either fusing two Digimon gives you a pre-existing one as an alternate evolution path to getting it (ex: Tankdramon naturally becomes Darkdramon, but you can combine Megadramon and Fantomon to get Darkdramon) or you get a specifically designed fusion of those two Digimon, like Paildramon, a combination of Stingmon and X-Vmon. It's what Smogon's doing now, more or less, and it's the better way to do it IMO. Design things with purpose.

bit weird to bring up bluffing as a plus for pokemon over cardgames - bluffing is inherent in all cardgames. And that doesn't just mean Poker, bluffing you do (not) have a specific spell, often a board wipe/removal spell, but also counters in the games that have them is an important part of the game once you reach a decent level in any of them. I do agree with the rest of the part about Pokemon as a competitive game (it has advantages and disadvantages, but is fine overall), although I have to say it would be nice if series were longer to somewhat counteract the inherent variance in Pokemon.

MTG has a ton of counter magic, but the vast majority of it is locked to one colour. If you're playing a format where you know your opponent has blue, you can actively anticipate and bait counter magic, where it's more surprising to see in white or the one counterspell in red. Yu-Gi-Oh has much less restrictive deckbuilding in that regard, with hand traps and negates being absurdly common. The negate traps of old, like Solemn Judgment and the like, are actually seen as too slow because you have to set them before they can be used. They've been mostly pushed out by the better counter tricks that came to be. Don't forget that every archetype nowadays has to have a big boss monster with an omni-negate, and the deck size difference (40 min. vs 60/100 min. for MTG) means you'll be seeing those counters more often over the course of a game. Sure, MTG may have more counterspells by sheer numbers, but Yu-Gi-Oh probably sees more constant use of their own counters. Can't say much about Pokémon TCG, though. I think I got a Feraligatr vs. Typhlosion duel deck back in 2005? lol
@Gabriel644684 ай бұрын
Tbc this is not limited to one cardgame (people are bringing up MtG specifically, which is the primeexample), I played a bunch of LoR for a year or two and both counterspells and boardwipes (and bluffing either that they are or weren't there) were important. Hearthstone doesn't have counterspells, except for the secret counterspell, but that actually is a thing you absolutely can bluff: Set up a board state that indicates one secret when you actually have another one up. Not being able to act during your opponent's turn makes the bluffing more limited, but it still is there, there of course are also boardwipes. McMeghan's perspective 100% made sense from the specific games he played, but I don't think Jimothy even mentioned specific games? Even if he did - just because the perspective is coherent doesn't mean that the statement is actually accurate.

Was thinking about the comparison to melee events to how these adv tournaments work in terms of getting larger pot bonuses to entice players to play. Other than through donations I remember melee invitationals had merch shops (shirts, keychains, etc.) online for which part of the proceeds went to increasing the pot. Something like that might work here too?

i think the tricky thing with the skarm vs ttar discussion is that skarm is more viable while ttar has more metagame impact. skarmory feels more powerful in a battle and you have to prepare for it to a greater extent, but the fact that permanent sand is the default state of the game completely alters the entire metagame in a huge way. without sand every bulky sand weak mon suddenly becomes way better and many of the current best mons like skarm, swampert, metagross and jirachi lose their main advantage, and besides that there'd be a ton of smaller changes like salac sweepers dominating, knock off/thief being mandatory on offense, rest talk being way better, etc. so if you're talking about viability rankings then sure skarmory is probably better, but ttar will always be the most central mon in the tier by far. also this is all a moot point since metagross is #1 anyway of course

Imma yap but... Idk, if I had to put my life on the line its prolly mr john BroFist, ABR or BKC because all 3 have the skill of not getting bored in a battle they never pull sum bs when it matters or choose a move just cause they lost attention turn 430, aswell their carreers are as long as online competitive pokemon exists. Idk what my goat top exactly looks like or who is my nr1 (although lowkey might just be ABR) but they are up there. Other top players imo are also McMeghan, Blunder, CBB, Aim, Soulwind and CTC tbh all of the players mention have shaped the game in really important ways have incredible perfomances and showed longevity, maybe thats not important to everyone but I do think it matters. Theres so many players that are definitive top players but its hard to pin point for sure. (Also ill say this I feel like whenever anyone says Blunder is one of the best online theres a weird energy where they get dismissed for just d riding or not really know players cause he is the funny haha man but my guy has shown time and time again to be one of the best players in any tier he puts time into (same goes for CTC tbh but anyone wh discounts CTC is showing themselves as someone who knows next to nothing))
