Baumgartner Restoration

4 ай бұрын

Auctions have become commonplace and we can buy and sell from our phones but for more discerning clients and objects a proper auction house is required. At Hindman Auctions they can employ their team of researches handlers, photographers and expertise within the world of art, antiquities, collectibles, and more to help buyers and seller find the right object and relationship.
In this episode we see how a painting goes from being damaged to setting historic record prices at auction all with the help of Hindman Auctions.

I like how the importance of provenance was stressed. A respected auction house not only provides confidence that a piece is what it is claimed to be, but also that it was acquired in a honest and ethical manner.

My first job out of College was as an assistant preparator for the Prix De West Auction at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and preparing artwork for a major auction is NO JOKE! It's a totally different and unique animal. All of the paintings and sculptures I worked with were contemporary and made within the last 10 years, so we didn't do any conservation work on them but It was very nerve wracking as a 21 year old to be handling paintings with $100,000 retail price tags, that end up selling for twice that at auction.

That Le Pho painting is beautiful. I also got invested because of not only the conservation process but because I’m American-Vietnamese with French imperialism heritage. Seeing that meld of Impressionism with traditional Vietnamese figures and values was a delight, alongside it being a beautiful painting in of itself.

In addition, there’s always that lingering feeling when your video ends and that painting we’ve spent watching you conserve, where we know as an audience it’ll go back to its client. That sense of longing and attachment. This thoroughly satisfied that feeling of seeing where it goes after!

I’ve held a paddle at a few auction (GBP hundred to low thousands) and the thrill of knowing the piece I’m keen to buy is approaching is huge. I watched the etiquette at the first auction to see how each lot was auctioned and was ready to raise my paddle when the time came. Then battle commenced. Me v typically one or two others in the room. I would sit towards the back and could see who else was bidding. They would turn around to find me, calm outside heart racing inside. The thrill of anticipation is nothing to having the winning bid. Buy the art you love. Worry about available wall space later.

Amazing job as usual. This was an emergency repair. Knowing Baumgartner’s ability to repair a damaged painting, while the letter of repair is nice, I would be happy seeing his business card tucked in with the paperwork of the sale. That tells me the artwork had an issue and was repaired by the best restorer of fine art that I am aware of. Not that there aren’t others who are just as capable, It’s just that I know the quality of Julian’s work, and it is stellar.

It was a great idea to present this episode by following a single work, and you couldn't have written a more dramatic ending! Yes, auction houses do valuable vetting and research, but the real reason you take your art to auction is to have it put in front of the people who want it. ebay can't even begin to do that.

It was nice to see all the work that goes on behind the scenes in the Auction House starting with you.Of course it’s obvious a lot of the artworks need checking and looking into so they can safely sell them and say it is what it is,where it came from,or who did it.Because the new owner would want to know all those things, after all they are usually buying one of a kind pieces of art or rare pieces. And of course there’s the huge prices they go for..Not that many of us would ever be able to buy from a place like this .Very well run though and everyone was very informative ..Thanks for taking us with you 🥰
