When Kissology DVD set was released, they did a one-day-only showing of one of the makeup era concerts on the big screen in our local theater. My friends and I bought tickets and tailgated with food and beverages outside the theater. It was fun seeing a Kiss concert like that on the big screen. Maybe when they finally retire they'll do it one more time and let everybody see the final show on the big screen since we couldn't be there.

I just yesterday drove 600 miles from Virginia to NY where I live. Thanks to Sean's channel it got me thinking, "why not listen to my lifetime favorite band KISS?". I listened to Alive, then Alive 2, then the first KISS album I ever bought, Rock and Roll Over, followed by KISS on shuffle (Spotify). It kept me so freaking awake and brought back such awesome memories!! I do that trip every few months, and always just listened to XM radio. I'm usually drowsy a few hours in. Not yesterday. Thanks Sean, for reminding me that my entire youth, and adulthood was only a few clicks away. These videos are good for me!!! I appreciate your channel!!!!

This is awesome Sean. I wanted to chime in that in the winter of 78' I believe Kiss took a year off after the solos were released. I met an amazing Kiss fan in 1990, who was the biggest Kiss fan in a small town I had recently moved to. Actually, he was the uncle of one of my best friends. And when I met him by chance in the summer of 90', I was completely fascinated with the 70's Kiss lineup. I was also a fan of the 80's lineup with Bruce and Eric Carr. Now we got to talking and he told me why Kiss called the Dynasty tour, The Return of KISS. He said he was a diehard Kiss Army member from 1975 thru 1978. Yet by 1979 he was no longer a fan per se, since he thought the Dynasty album was disco. He wasn't a disco type of guy. But he asked me if I had ever found a copy of a late 70's music magazine with Kiss on the cover, the headlines read: KISS Dead, A World In Mourning, The New Gene... and I said no. But already my friend's uncle had me very intrigued and he said the magazine was trying to pull a similar thing like that of The Beatles where Paul McCartney was rumored to have died mysteriously. He proceeded to tell me the Kiss magazine sold for $1.95 in 1978, but that finding one even by 1990's standards was ultra rare, almost nonexistent actually unless you attended a Kiss Convention. And I'm not certain how many of these particular magazines there actually were. So I'm all ears. I listened as he relates the story of reading about his favorite super hero rock group had supposedly died and were replaced by impostures. He reassured me the magazine was fake news about Kiss. Even so the actual magazine does exist. I just seen two copies for sale at a staggering $100 and $106!!! Naturally I'm not made of moolah and I hope to find a copy of said magazine somewhere for a lot less. All that he told me and we talked about came flooding back when I watched your documentary and it made sense to me as to why their 79' Dynasty tour was called "The Return of KISS". Pre-internet days was challenging and quite difficult finding anything about the 70's Kiss if you didn't know any of the first generation Kiss fans that is that held onto their collections. I remember my friend's uncle graciously gave me a 78' Peter Criss song book, two re-prints of 70's Kiss poster/centerfolds (one of which I'm still searching to this very day to replace). It was of Kiss in their early makeup stages right about 73'- 74' ish and it was after Paul dropped the Bandit makeup. These posters/ centerfolds were from an issue of Guitar magazine. He also gave me three Don Russ Ace Frehley trading cards from series one. He unfortunately lost almost his entire Kiss collection in a basement flood in 1990 the same month I moved to town. Otherwise, he said he would have also given me his three sets of 77' Mego dolls. That's three Ace's, Three Paul's, Three Peter's, and Three Gene's all in their original boxes. I nearly flipped! That would have been the modern day equivalent of hitting the lottery three times over and for a young Kiss fan like I was with little next to nothing. It would have been a dream come true for me. My friend's uncle during the 70's bought up what he could of Kiss and kept it nice until the basement flooded. 😢 He was also going to give me the Kiss Chevy van (box and everything), but lost it too. Unfortunately, I wore out the Ace trading cards he gave me I carried them on my person all the time. Years later I bought replacement copies (including duplicates) to carry on me. Those cards and more importantly, his generosity and knowledge of Kiss meant the world to me. I used to carry a pencil and index cards on my person at all times. I wish I kept those index cards. I had filled up several with our conversation that day. This is a fascinating documentary Sean. Thank you for sharing. I just wanted to share my piece of Kisstory with other Kiss Army members. 😊❤

Love that advertisement from 1978 advertising the Kiss solo albums. These days they would have held the top 4 album chart positions easy. They are all good albums, but imagine the shock to Paul and Gene's ego when Ace produces one of the greatest rock albums of the era. This ground Gene and Paul's gears as they brought in only midrange material and Ace just had a thing to prove. A live concert from the 1979/1980 in surround sound and IMAX. I'm sure it is out there somewhere.

I’m sure Gene and Paul were shocked at Ace’s album but honestly, it seems more like a positive shock than anything else. Ace wrote and sang a lot more on the next two Kiss albums and they used his drummer on those albums. Paul in particular seems very happy that Ace stepped up like that and has always complimented Aces writing ability.

@@derekp308 I don't know. I think it was mentioned in a 1979 radio interview and they said they were reconsidering whether to do it, esp. given their experience on Kiss Meets the Phantom. The 1981 Elder movie was to have starred Robert Christie, Chris Makepeace. and Antony Parr. The three recorded dialogue for the album (which wasn't used) and were told there was going to be a film to follow, which they were to star in, and a tour where the band would perform without makeup for the first time. Once the album failed commercially, it sounds like the accompanying movie fell apart. There have been attempts to revive the movie by and with other filmmakers/actors (in. Seb Hunter) but I don't think anything has ever been completed. Do a search for "Chris Makepeace The Elder" and you will find a couple interviews he did on the subject, one at BraveWords and one at Kiss Concert History Online.

If you examine the KISS concept from initial presentation until Dynasty, it feels like the ability to refresh their image each year had run out of steam. I think going from black and silver to a rainbow of colors illustrated how depleted the band had gotten by that point. KISS had toured endlessly and were worn out. Doing the type of movie presented was something that really fractured the band, because it was clear the project did not get everyone's consent (and for good reason). History shows that fracture created allot of the turmoil that collapsed the band. Drinking and drug consumption were exacerbated from exhaustion and creative misdirection that led each of the members to their respective corners and vices. Because two of the four were choosing other means to escape, did not limit their impact on the damage they were causing. In my eyes, the solo record project was a terrible idea because it fed the fracture and provided a false sense of relief and possible escape from the band issues which became apparent soon after. This is why most of us who followed the band from the mid 70's on, feel the pinnacle moment was Love Gun and Alive II. Once the movie came out, essentially every bit of credibility they had worked their butts off to receive was thrown out the window with a childish film that completely defanged their mystique and their appeal as a band with an edge to them. Putting on capes and singing disco was the final nail in the coffin. While I understand that was the moment where younger kids came onboard and embraced that period, it did not provide the band with the bump in commercial appeal that would replace the losses they were sustaining from their core fan base. This is why their crowd demographic changed drastically on the Dynasty tour, because they had already begun taking on heavy losses from those who had seen them only two years earlier.

Interestingly, the solo albums were negotiated into their second record deal in the mid 70s. They weren't a snap decision to keep the band together in 78. Julian Gill has copies of that contract indicating the solos were included and all 4 would only count as ONE Kiss album in that contract. As well, Ace had said that he didn't' contribute anything to Rock & Roll Over because he was saving his material for that solo album.

I don't think Ace's memory is so good - in fact, he even admits it himself. The solo album project wasn't even introduced until both Ace & Peter expressed desire to quit the band around the time of the Kiss Meets the Phantom movie (early 78) , so there would have been no reason for Ace to hold back songs from RARO (76) for his solo album.

@@dwightrenfield2241Their second contract right after the Alive/Destroyer period clearly says they would eventually be required to do 4 solo albums. Maybe they were worried a new drummer and a new character wouldn’t be well received by casual moviegoers? Idk. Speaking of that new contract that KISS signed, I can’t help but wonder if that was the same one Chris Lendt wrote about in KISS & Sell? Sometime around 80-82 KISS secured a lucrative royalty deal which would pay them $1.20 per unit(album) sold. This is also a minor reason that KISS was broke throughout the 80’s. Even though Ace quit, he was still under contract until 1985. Creatures of The Night and Lick It Up were certified gold, but Animalize was *supposed to be* a big money maker since it went platinum not long after release. But since Ace was still under contract he got 1/3 of the royalties. $1.20 x 1,000,000 = $1,200,000 Ace received approximately $400,000. I imagine the band would’ve fared better financially if Ace hadn’t been getting a cut.

@@SeanBlumenshineI’ve heard that. Chris Lendt says that Peter retained a stake. Ace claims he was the one. So I don’t know which source to believe. I’m inclined to believe Chris because I’ve found Ace to not be truthful about a few things. Not calling Ace a liar, just stating that a few things he’s claimed (such as owning his makeup) have been debunked by multiple sources. The only reason I call into question that it wasn’t Peter, is because it makes sense that Ace would retain his stake for a few years. Think about it, KISS renegotiated their contract around 80-81, Ace *quits*, the contract stipulated that the principal partners of KISS were: Simmons, Stanley, and Frehley; therefore Ace would likely be entitled to a share of revenue until that contract expired. Idk man. We might never know for sure.

And I can't forget all the fire, explosions and other effects like ACEs smoking guitar. In fact I almost got a piece of the cheap guitar that Paul busted up and threw into the audience! It was their live shows that were their hallmark. I finally grew up and discovered what real music was in my early 20s. I had chosen Aces side in the fight. Chriss really was messing up pretty bad and couldn't get sober. I had realized Ace was actually the better of the musicians in the group. Or let's say he tried using more than the lick or 2 most of the songs from the first 3 albums all seemed to have. I still like some of the old songs. Destroyer is still my favorite album. I probably have 10-12 Kiss songs sprinkled throughout my playlists. 3 off Aces solo and the rest off Destroyer, Dr.Love and songs from the Elder. I will give honorable mention to Alive platinum for the best mix and sound and to sycho circus for what to me sounded like a experiment in a heavier edgier sound. But it didn't make up for the bad marketing when they dropped the makeup. Kiss was never going to get anywhere with their musical skills. Tho they're really not that bad. Gene and Paul had good rock and roll voices. Gene was also a very decent bassist. Paul a very good rhythm guitar player. Peter was over talented for the group. At his best he could hold his own against any rock drummer past or present. His drumming skills in Kiss were like putting $25,000 worth of wheels and tires on a $300 Pinto station wagon! Please guys! Retire!

Just... Lovely idea!!! I would LOVE to see a tour film, or a Hollywood adaption with carefully picked actors, during the early years - the tour in a ... Don't know the english word: Herrgårdsvagn... To see Stinky (Gene) and Whatthefuck(Ace) share a single room wall to wall with Look, Im not gay at all - I have hair on my chest(Paul) and Don'tyatry it I'll stab you (Pete)... I would soooo wanna see the movie about 1973-1975... Love from Sweden 💖

I owned the Animalize Uncensored Tour, unfortunately, on VHS. I think a great tour (era) to film would be a Behind the Scenes of the recording of Destroyer after finishing touring for Alive. 75-77 is definitely the peak for this group.

I wish they could have licensed the video for KISS DESTROYS ANAHEIM and cleaned it up a little. There would have been no need or reason for can added framing plot; maybe splice in some interviews. The band has always been at their best when they were playing live. It was always my understsnding that the one who suggested doing a solo album first was Ace; he allegedly b threatened to leave if that didn't happen.

That’s the story they’ve always told, that it was decided during the making of Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park because Ace was threatening to leave. But their contracts showed up online and the solo albums were part of it. Timing of it may have been because of Ace.

Best years to do it would probably have been 1978 instead of Phantom, 1979 after the success of Dynasty, or 1997 fall/winter with the Reunion Tour being so well received.

well with the same set up / set they also filmed the videos for she so European & Talk to me. which featured eric car. maybe with their popularity going down hill at the time they thought it isn't a Good time for a Kiss Movie. NOT a Movie but i thought Kiss exposed 1987 was a Good one, and Extreme close up in 1993 was really Good with paul & Gene Talking and old Video clips.

Even though KISS was my favorite band then their popularity started fizzling out with the hard-core Rockers! "I was made for loving you" was an embarrassment in spite of the album hadving some great rockers like "Hard Times". KISS ALIVE II should have been filmed and released in theaters. They were Giant Rockers then.

April fools Day, 1980 - KISS signs a lucrative 6 album deal with Polygram, plus another Peter Criss solo album. This is what happens when a label looks at the numbers but doesn't do due diligence on the quality and popularity of a band. They probably didn't even listen to other rock records released around that time to get a feel for the direction music was turning. Peter Criss missed out on the pot of gold by getting spectacularly fired, and Ace quit after the second album. The money had nowhere to go but to Gene and Paul's bank accounts.

I think a theatrical movie will become. There WILL be a reunion of the original four members after the End of the road tour. And there will be new records as well. Kiss is far from done. I believe they will do Vegas. A concept album like the Elder is not out of question either. But the reunion is 100% sure. I believe they are - again - just starting !

Peter Criss at least had control of the band playing a real live concert. Sadly Kiss's concerts are tightly controlled affairs using click tracks, pre recorded vocals and a very rigid set list of songs. Maybe the bigger question is where was the lost Kiss Alive 3 albums that covers the early 80's era Kiss. Real fans have created it yet Kiss ignore this era as if it's poison. Thanks for your support as always 😣

Kiss was supposed to do a movie, besides how they met a phantom of magic mountain amusement park. In fact, they even made a soundtrack to it, even though the movie was never made; Kiss; music from the elder. And, eventhough they may be too old to do live action acting performances they can still make that movie through animation like the motion picture, Heavy Metal. So, kiss fans, bug them into doing it. Have a nice day! 🤘

Anything that starts with Sailor Quift has most people scratching their heads, KISS and the woke Swift shill machine are extremely polar at these points in their individual careers. What Mr. Gil does not know is the proposed second KISS movie ( a version of ABBA: the movie) stayed in the KISS realm of possibilities until mid-1983. I met the producer/director for that potential second film in Canada in 1983.
