Behind the plastic surgery boom in South Korea

Globally, surgeons performed more than 20 million cosmetic procedures last year. South Korea, a country of about 50 million people, accounted for nearly a million of them. It reportedly has the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita. Seth Doane visited Seoul to look at the country's $5 billion dollar a year industry.

Its because back then rich korean men married beautiful women (and back then plastic surgery didn't exist) so the kids turned out beautiful. I know lots of naturally beautiful koreans born into wealthy families and the mom is always stunning. Theres no money spent because naturally beautiful ppl don't get surgery.

At the same time, it makes the Situation for people with assymetries etc worse who can not afford surgery. Best would without any doubt be a society that is Not that superficial and where we do not judge people as much by the way they look. Surgery can still be an option for people with insecurities after they tried their best to deal with it in other ways, tried to accept themselves the way they are. But that is the only scenario where plastic surgery, surgery for the sake of looking "better", is senseful.

Well, it's one thing I was never proud of as a South Korean. It was a common mindset to follow the crowd and most especially trends. If having pale white skin has stuck around for generations, you bet it's still a popular thought today. And what he said is true: since almost everyone gets good grades back there, the next thing people are judged for is their looks. I always get complimented on my height and "small face" by other older Koreans in America, which I receive thankfully but I still wondered why that was so when I was too young to understand beauty standards. The situation was really bad, there was a LAW (yeah, A LAW) passed to ban profile pictures in job resumes so no judgment on physical appearance would be taken into consideration. And as much freedom there is for everyone has to their choices, it's a cultural issue that I've dealt with before I even passed the second year of middle school. I was stuck with so much pressure and insecurity after seeing Ulzzangs for the first time on s.m, and I had this whole plan for tweaking my face and skin whitening if I went to South Korea (which wouldn't have happened with my parents anyway). But a few things have changed in South Korea over the years since this news report, at least from the few discussions I've heard and seen. Still, if I took this out of a personal cultural discussion, people could take plastic surgery as a regret they look back to or a way to boost their confidence. Either way, they should be able to move forward with their choice.

MLxSuGaR um it’s not that hard to tell if someone has something like Botox or the fat graft. In the case of Botox for example a general way to see if a person has it is to look at their forehead. People with Botox don’t have the forehead wrinkles as much. There’s probably loads of ways to figure out who has surgery and who doesn’t

Korean are more open minded when it comes to plastic surgery unlike Americans who hating Kardashians because of their lip fillers and botox but they don't know how bizzare Korean beauty standard is that you will get judge being ugly not for having surgery. Sad but truth. In Japan there's an 8 year old kid who went double eyelid surgery because her mom wants it. though the kid say she wants it but I doubt I guess it's the mother who wants her daughter to go under knife just for the sake of being called pretty. In korean most celebrity and idols undergo plastic surgery and it's very common. You should expect it even if the person is already beautiful but they want to look perfect.

Beauty shouldn't be affecting every single thing people do. My problem with plastic surgery is that youre not solving the problem by fixing your exterior. You have to fix the inside to be truly satisfied. When youre that insecure about how you look, changing your face isnt going to help. You'll just keep finding things that you think are ugly and keep changing your appearance over and over again and you'll never be satisfied with the way you look. Especially since ideal appearances change with time. I know a little bit about Korean culture and I know that plastic surgery is expected there, but I kind of think it is a blemish on the culture just like American capitalism is a blemish on our culture.

Sometimes when u need it, go for it. Because i know some surgeries are for those who got their face crashed during an accident or etc. But we all still have to respect the one who chooses plastic surgery bcz we got different opinions, we chase for different things so no one is right or wrong.
