We are back with Oscar Winning sound mixer Mark Ulano & his partner (in both life & sound) boom operator Patrushka Mierzwa to talk 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'.
In this episode we discuss the art of the Boom Operator (also known as a 1AS or First Assistant Sound) & the dance that these skilled operators engage in when choreographing a tough scene.
We hear from both Mark and Patrushka on the importance of a broad knowledge in the art of filmmaking & how their key boom operator Tom Hartig (www.imdb.com/name/nm0366730/) embodies this.
In one scene breakdown we learn what it’s like to be ‘inside the scene’ in a flow-like state of performance with some of today’s greatest working actors. Either that or just trying not to get in shot while being crushed in the back of a trailer.
Also discussed is Mark and Patrushka’s long-time collaborative relationship with director Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino film sets are a special working environment, often going to great lengths to create just the right atmosphere for actors and crew alike.
Mark & Patrushka are a husband & wife Sound Team who have made a lasting impact on the art of cinema audio since they began working together in the 1980s.
We are so grateful to Mark & Patrushka for agreeing to be a part of this series. We hope this video helps bridge the gap of understanding how important and specialised each role in the film industry truly is.
