Behind the Scenes: 2015 CrossFit Games, Part 4

Go behind the scenes at the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games with unprecedented access to the fittest athletes on the planet. Catch Games competitors in intimate moments and vulnerable positions.
In Part 4 of five, Sevan Matossian offers a look at all the “glamor” behind the scenes-ice baths, drug tests and blood blisters-as the athletes complete Sprint Course 1 and Sprint Course 2, the Soccer Chipper, Clean and Jerk, and Triangle Couplet.
Matossian also gets rare glimpses into athletes’ personal lives. Former champion Camille Leblanc-Bazinet confides that husband Dave Lipson “every day is asking for a baby.”
Denae Brown confesses that she missed out on last year’s Games because she “was accidentally pregnant at regionals.”
“It’s because it’s CrossFit and she looks better naked,” friend and fellow competitor Whitney Gelin says with a knowing smile.
At the end of the day, rising star Katrin Tanja Davidsdottir refuses to rest on her laurels as she sits near the top of the leaderboard.
“I don’t think this counts for much,” she says. “Tomorrow afternoon, no one’s going to care where you were in the middle of Saturday. All that matters is where you’re standing after the last event on Sunday.”

I feel crossfit has been taking a page out of the NFL's playbook. NFL got huge when it started by filming everything (see: NFL Films, Ed Sabol)...Crossfit's been doing that as well with great success. Fantastic job, keep it up.

I honestly cannot stand it when people talk about flushing lactic acid from muscles when it's more than 20-30 minutes after the exercise has stopped 18:14....seriously, just read any exercise physiology book made past the 1980s. It's accessible to everyone now - there's no need to be ignorant on the issue. And please, don't talk about improving someone's "neurology"....jesus. This is SUCH a pet peeve of mine! You might be helping to clear some metabolic waste, but it's NOT lactic acid.

+ArchAngel` Oh for sure I get that, but what I"m talking about is this myth that you need to help flush lactic acid from your muscles. The buildup of lactic acid in muscles during anaerobic training is gone usually within 30 minutes of stopping exercising for most people and is completely gone within 60 minutes for everyone (unless you have a certain condition that affects this). People who are more fit can clear lactic acid quicker than those who are less fit.

+ArchAngel` And if I'm being really picky I am going to need him to explain why he says he's applying tension vs compression. It's hard to see exactly what he's doing but it looks like he's massaging / pressing on the TFL, which would be compression then. He could be flexing the knee and trying to extend the hip, though, in which case it would be stretching (creating tension) on the TFL and hip flexors.

+Christopher Lee Yea I agree on that. but I think in the video he is doing this as pre workout prep. so in my head it makes some sense although you are right about compression thing you mentioned. But it's probably mostly matter of mental prep to the athlete, it's just easier to go all in at the workout if you believe you are prepared like this.
