At first, I wasn't a giant fan of how many unanswered questions were left. Then, as I sat with it and slept on it, i realized that that's kinda the whole point now. @shmikex

When looking at this episode from a high level, you get "Turn Left" vibes. Similar to Turn Left, there is a Doctor-lite episode involving the companion living their life in an alternate timeline. But once you get beyond that, there are a few concerning things. 1. The difference here is, we see 60ish years of a "Doctorless Timeline" and everything turned out fine (unlike in Turn Left when the world went to crap only within a few years without the Doctor). So I guess throughout their time traveling adventures moving from now on changes will need to be made so that something does attack the Earth again (probably Daleks). 2. That being said, in this "Doctorless Timeline" they could have had some tragedy (or tragedies) occur which sets the world up such that Roger ap Gwilliam could come to power. And basically now with the Doctor back in the universe he can save the day from these threats over the next X adventures and never have the world at a point where Gwilliam actually gets elected. 3. They also could have had it such that in the beginning of the episode the Doctor mentions Gwilliam and he steps on the circle after Ruby distracts him with questions about Gwilliam, but in the end loop he doesn't go off on that tangent (because Gwilliam was an issue) and was able to prevent himself from stepping into that circle. 4. Now in this timeline where the Doctor still exists, Older Ruby isn't able to use her future shadow to stop Gwilliam. So there's still that to deal with.

3:48 What I get from this is that it was about fixing the mistake the Doctor did by breaking the Fairy Circle so Ruby had to do something good (stop Roger Williams) so that she could spring back in time to prevent what the Doctor did. I thought it was about an evil spirit in form of "Mad Jack" who may possessed Roger Williams but could it be that it was just a vengeful spirit who was mad about the broken fairy circle? It would give the phrase "Watch your step" another deep meaing as you can´t be sure what you´re going to step in.
@luisd.mancilla8169

I got the same impression as you about Mad Jack possessing Rogers. Because Rogers obviously was already meant to exist before the circle was broken, seeing as the Doctor was talking about him beforehand, but he was just sort of a bad pm rather than a nuclear bomb maniac. So I feel like Ruby's act of redemption was stopping Mad Jack who was acting through Roger.

One of the unanswered questions is ‘why did The Doctor disappear?’ I’ve formed a workable explanation in my head but I can understand this feeling like a stone unturned. Otherwise, the rest of the questions unanswered don’t really matter, e.g. ‘what was the old Ruby saying that made others run away?’ It just doesn’t matter, that’s not the point of the episode. This was an amazing episode... that I don't ever want to watch again!😅. The whole thing was brilliant top to bottom, but it was just so depressing, especially what happens when Carla speaks to the Woman. I was devastated and I personally don't want to ever relive that, but who knows? Maybe I'll come around later. For now, on to the next episode!

So, do you understand who's going to deal with Roger ap Gwilliam now that Ruby hasn't stopped him? What about the fact that a random old woman was enough to make Ruby's mum abandon her? Why did people run away from the woman, and what could she have said that made even Kate Stewart do the same? So many unanswered questions means that the plot wasn't well thought-out.

@@ingec1736 Incorrect. I've been watching it since Matt Smith, and I've rewatched everything from Eccleston to Capaldi _several_ times over. All of these questions are ones that are only relevant to _this_ episode; as such, they are ones that should be answered _by_ this episode. This episode has introduced a villain and thwarted him, only to then set him back to where he was at the start and forget about him. It has also introduced the idea that Kate Stewart and Ruby's mum are so easily scared that a blurry old woman is enough to make them abandon people. The over-arching plot of Series 14 is the identity of Ruby's mum, the origin of the snow, and what's going on with Susan Twist's characters; this episode has done nothing to further these plot points beyond finally having a main character recognise that Susan keeps popping up, but even _that_ development gets erased by the end of the episode.

Older Ruby coming back to her younger self to change a different timeline was so similar to what they had already done in quite a few different episodes in the last few decades (I think one was with Amy and the Angels, one was the doctor coming back to his younger self, and a few more..). So I found it a bit predictable, but still the episode was very good! Also love how they keep stepping on things 🚨 the butterfly, the landmine, the fairy circle..hmm intriguing!

really? i can’t think of a single thing that we could find out that would give me the creeps more than not knowing. It feels more psychological than just a simple explanation, because realistically what can cause people to react like that? If we got an answer, i don’t think it would be satisfying. I think keeping it ambiguous and letting our imaginations fill in the gap is perfect. I don’t like ALL of the unanswered questions in this episode, but that is one thing i’m happy not knowing.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I was loving it right up until the end when it was revealed who the old woman was. If it was Ruby all along how was she teleporting herself around? What was she saying to people to make them run away? The bootstrap paradox things bugs me too. The whole time I thought it was some supernatural being who knew something about Ruby and her origins that was scaring everyone away from her. Everything before that ending though was really good. Chilling, disturbing, and you felt so sad for Ruby.
