@@Niek_DeBaneer In term of consistency they are probably there, the ability to tweak their gameplay, not being just physically superior but to manage and use every opportinity the right way and consistently is absolutely impressive. Not as keen on the eye as the AB in Carter's era which is the gold standard but as effective in an arguably more dense era with AB, France and Ireland in the same bracket talentwise.. The difference between these teams is tiny if there is any. Sure some referees decisions come in to play but at some point it can't be only bad luck or some kind of machination for their opponents. I'm french by the way so I still got some scar tissues, but if we had 10 points or more as we shoud have had at half time against them the discussion would be very different but my aunt isn't my uncle so here we are...

There are so many world best players at their post in the Springboks, now and then. From Ox to Cheslin, they are fantastic at what they do, but for a 9 playing behind such a pack, the Springbok "tradition" give less chances to show skills and rugby vision than the French traditional play does. I remember Kolbe playing for Toulouse, most magical winger I have ever watched, more so because he is not physically huge, as was Lomu.

School rugby is well developped in SOME parts of France, i.e. mostly the South, there is even a "Baby Rugby" activity for 3 to 6 years olds. Most big clubs have a elementary school age activity. There are some "sport études" secondary schools with a rugby section for youngsters aiming at the professional player career, like Antoine Dupont did; it is a half-time scheme between the cosen sport and studies. It could be developped in Scotland, the main problems I see are weather and low density of population in the countryside, making it difficult for schools to have 30 young players.

I think we tend to be obsessed with choosing a GOAT. IMO, no one can be called the greatest in a team sport like rugby. Currently the greatest scrum half, yes, Dupont no doubt is. But the various positions demand specific skills and physical and mental attributes and so why not instead talk about a player being one of the best number eights, or locks, or tightheads, wingers, centres or full backs, etc?

I agree 100% on that. A prop could never be the goat, because it doesn’t touch the ball enough and doesn’t offer « highlights ». Yet, props is what gives South Africa World Cups. They are crucial. Not renowned for being a comedian it's a statement regarding the range of the guy. GOAT is a stupid statement because in the sport the positions are so different. Pieter-Steph Du Toit is also a freak of nature, diffferent range but what a player. Now changing code and being that effective is someting to behold, Kwagga Smith being a fantastic player in that category as well but Dupont is a generational talent if not more. He is in the mix but not so sure that many people would agree. You’ve got Gareth Edwards, Joost VDW, Gregan, Aaron Smith and Dupont is on his way. He just turned 28. If he keeps on going like that for the next 5 years he’ll top that list.

Don't know who this AdP could be, but AD went to play 7s for his country during Olympic Games in Paris for honor. He lost money = the match bonuses are higher for the 15s national team and club team. And if he had not been good at 7s, he would have lost sponsors too. Typical for saffas not to be able to write his name properly.
