This is a short behind the scenes looking into the making of “The Colour of Light,” a short film I recently shot on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.
I was one of the fortunate few to be given access ahead of its official release, and with a short timeframe to pull it off, I wanted to put this camera through its paces, to see how it would perform.
So I gathered together a few of my friends who all work within different creative industries around Perth and captured them doing what they are most passionate about. From dancing late at night in the city, an early morning photography scene in Beelu National Park, to filming in the direct harsh Australian sun, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K excelled in every situation I threw at it.
I decided to film this the same way I would a documentary. We had a story to work from. However, I decided to only use the light that was already in the environment.
'The Colour of Light' - The short film will be uploaded to Blackmagic Official youtube page in a few days, so be sure to subscribe and hit the notification button so you don't miss out on watching it!"

Superb work Garth. Did you opt to shoot more with shoulder rig because it was more organic ?

Thanks for this video. I stumbled across "The Colour of Light" on KZbin (actually recommended to me by the all-knowing AI singularity at KZbin HQ). Finally, dynamic range comparable to the human eye -- no mean feat considering how eyes work (each individual pixel with its own auto-sensitivity and color balance control).

Thank you! The guys over at the Grading Lab at BM in Melbourne put it through resolve on a grading monitor and made some minor tweaks to maximise the dynamic range in the final image.

Years ago, I edited digital photos for an exhibit using a calibrated CRT monitor. Ultimately, I tweaked the monitor until it looked like prints made from the same data (prints viewed under lighting conditions adjusted to match typical gallery illumination). In video production, there is no validating print -- no concrete result I can look at to assess exactly how video will appear on typical display devices. I can press a magic button claiming to accomplish a proper result, and let the software take a stab at the problem. But I am the artist -- not my computer -- and I would like to see an objective confirmation (not just my own screen smiling at me tying say 'everything will be okay.'). Where my print-making standard was ultimately based on user-experience -- a person gazing at a 18x24 inch print from two meters lit by 150 lux illumination -- my new standard may need to be an iPhone-user standing in line at Starbucks (seriously). Most video in the 21st Century is viewed on phones, and as long as the video *also* looks great on a UHD '4K' monitor -- grading for an iPhone user (as painful as that thought may be) seems to be the ultimate calibration test.

Beautiful sir. Can you name the Shoulder rig that you put the camera on, please? It's no more a myth to me of taking those cinematic "shaky" style footages after watching this. So informative. Thank you.
