When you look at the sheer cast numbers, characters, cameras, extras, scene you can see the sheer complexity behind the making of the film you can see it had never been done before and will never be done again despite all the green screens special effects of modernity will never be done again. Sheer masterpiece, Selznick and Vivien

What a beautiful 'behind-the-scenes' moment for Gone with the Wind! Back then, I'm not sure whether they realized that they were creating classics and setting high benchmark for movie industry! All of the aspects, the production, artistic skills and cast are such enjoyment to watch and out of all, it IS a literature adaptation which making it an epitome of art-literature genre too. Hard to top even years gone by. Great storyline and lessons to dug up!

Could never understand where they came up with Leslie Howard to play Ashley Wilkes. In the book Ashley would have been in his early 20s at the start of the story; Leslie Howard was almost 50! Even Leslie Howard thought he was miscast in the part. I certainly agree.

During the war, Leslie Howard, best remembered today for his role as Ashley in "Gone With The Wind", and one of the finest British film directors of the day, made a dramatised film of the story of the development of the Spitfire. It is more poignant for knowing that Howard himself was killed by the Nazis later in the war when an aeroplane carrying him home to England over the Bay of Biscay was singled out for interception by the Luftwaffe**. Called "The First Of The Few" and first shown in cinemas in 1942 **Howard's manager, Alfred Chenhalls who was also on the flight, bore a resemblance to Winston Churchill and it seems likely that the aircraft was targeted because the Germans thought the Prime Minister was aboard, certainly after it was shot down the rumours of the "death of Churchill" spread throughout the German Forces in France. Incidently, Howard and Chenhall's departure on their ultimate flight had been delayed by 3 days so that they could attend the Portugese premier of "The First of the Few". A full description of the events leading up to Howard's death can be read in an article by Richard Garrett in the book "Great Unsolved Mysteries" , edited by John Canning, published by Guild publishing in 1984. Frank Falla, a Channel-Island newspaper man who was imprisoned in France for publishing an underground newspaper, tells of his German guards celebrating the "death of Churchill" in his book "The Silent War" (Published by Leslie Frewin 1967, reprinted by Burbridge Ltd in the Channel Islands 1981)

Their salaries were ridiculously low in comparison to the salaries of today. Clark got 117,000 while Vivien received about 30,000. Hattie got 6,500. The list of the others are similar. But the film topped 20 million in five months. I don't know the production costs, but GWTW made a huge profit.

@@Brucev7 What is 20 million in today's Dollars? Of course things cost less then. I have often considered that some additional money was under the table for tax purposes. Maybe after GWTW became success . Could Hattie's salary of $6500 been enough to purchase the house she lived in after filming finished? She still would have taxes come out of it, also. I don't know. Costs were less, but that was a large HOME.

My first reaction is it was Cammie King, who played Bonnie Butler, but I really think it is Vivien Leigh's daughter, Suzanne Holman. She would have been about five at the time. The reason I think it is Vivien's daughter as the little girl appears to have blond hair (Suzanne was blond) whereas Cammie King's hair was black in the movie. Plus Vivien is dressed in the dress she wore to the barbecue at Twelve Oaks, at which point "Bonnie" wasn't around.

Seeing as how there's only one girl in the movie that was an easy, obvious guess that anybody could offer. But really, the pictured girl looks NOTHING like the little actress who played Bonnie Blue, Cammie King. Re answering boi76311's question.@@animetrash6237

Not Cammie, but I've always liked Bonnie's real name. iirc, it was Eugenie Victoria Butler In the book of course, there was Wade Hampton Hamilton and Ella Lorena Kennedy. I've always been amused by how reading the book, then watching the movie, is like being on amphetamines...just zipping through.

I agree Scarlett wasn't "nice" but that's how she was written in the book. She was spoiled and later did what she had to do to survive. Even Scarlett herself realized that. She wanted to be a "Great Lady" like her mother but knew she fell far short of that. That is what makes her such a fascinating character, but yes you really wouldn't want to know her really.
