A most beautiful couple indeed. I love Carol Lombard in that movie with Fredric March. I can't remember the name of it at the moment. That movie is a riot. Eugene Palett is in it too. She pretends she's sick, so everyone in the city feel sorry for her. She even gets a key to the city. Anyways, it's definitely a great one. And then Clark Gable in Night Nurse. He's such a bad guy in that one. Another one of my favorites.

That would take quite a lady. Years ago I read a biography on Clark Gable. I don't remember who wrote it unfortunately. In it the author said eventually Kay, agreed to talk to him. She loved him very much. But she told the author she " couldn't compete with Carole's ghost". The marriage lasted until his passing. Very special what she did.

After the plane crash, Gable went to get Carole’s body on the mountain. He was devastated by her loss.
@JustMe-dd8lj4 жыл бұрын
Press reports state he was not on the mountain. Even though he was famous, he certainly was not trained/qualified to be on a recovery/rescue crew. But he was waiting at the bottom of the mountain to escort her body home. The hike itself is arduous, long, and to say a rough hike is an understatement. With all the press around at that time and adding the treacherousness of the climb, Gable would have been ill-advised to make that journey. And he didn’t want the recovery of his wife’s body to be a circus. So reports of him being on the mountain are false. That is fact.
@lemorab13 жыл бұрын
@@JustMe-dd8lj Thank you for playing the theme from "Fried Green Tomatoes" with your video. It has the right sad, nostalgic tone. However, this lovely tribute has several inaccuracies. Lombard was tiny, about 5'1". Big personality, small woman. Clark Gable died in November, 1960, not 1961. Eddie Mannix made the climb up Mt. Potosi to identify Carole's body. Lombard loved cafe society and parties. Gable was the one who didn't. In his films after her death, we never again see that famous Gable Tomcat Grin or a twinkle in his eye.

One of the greatest and most tragic love story. They adored each other. Those close to Clark say he was ne never quite the same after he lost Carole. He continued to live his life, serve his country, and married 2 more times. Luella Parsons said there was a forever private shrine in his heart that belonged to Carole. So sad he didn't live long enough to experience the birth of his son, with 5th wife Kay Spreckles Gable. He was all man, and a gentleman. There will never be another.

The music was perfect. Thank you! I wondered if anyone else identified it from the FGT soundtrack. Most of the time, I cannot stand the music people put with their videos, but this is perfect. One caveat: Lombard was about 5'1" tall. She was tiny. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and my early childhood was spent at the tail end of the horse ranching, rural era, just before the freeways and tract housing. My friend Lindsay lived one block from the Gable ranch on Petit Street. For more on Gable and Lombard's life in the Valley, read Victoria Wilson's biography of Barbara Stanwyck, "Steel True." Stanwyck built a house on Devonshire Blvd. about 6 miles from the Gable ranch in Encino. Stanwyck's house still stands, almost just as she built it.

Most people don't know the reason Carole rushed back home was because Gable was making a movie with a new upcoming actress and was well known for his infidelity. This is why he felt so much remorse for her death! Her brothers never forgave him for the event that killed both their Mother and Sister. Gable also reaped a great deal of money from her death and was well known for being cheap! When his English wife after Carol moved in and started to redecorate the home he was said to be mad that she was spending too much of HIS money!

As you assert, Jessica, this was a rarity in the early Hollywood era; the sadness lies in the epithet, 'No good thing lasts forever...' & that is the cruel irony that beset this enigmatic, young couple...as a movie buff, I'm a huge fan of their film work. There aren't many actor couples that go the distance, but Spencer Tracy & Katherine Hepburn (whilst not married) remained extant for over twenty-five years, & notwithstanding Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward; clearly, they had the 'magic' formula.... beautifully presented - thank you !

Evidently the real story of their marriage isn't quite so rosy, but the true one is even more tragic - especially for him. As much as Gable loved Carole - and he did - Clark, like a lot of good-looking men who see themselves as God's gift to women, never saw the need to be faithful. His latest romp was with his leading lady Lana Turner. Carole was off on a war bond-raising drive and begged him to stop and think about their marriage. When he refused, she got on a plane with her mother to fly home and save her marriage. But the plane crashed, killing everybody on board. Clark then evidently realized what he'd done, and what he'd lost. He blamed himself, as he should have, and spent the rest of his life having to live with it. That's a hell of a lesson for a pretty boy, but he grew up in a hurry. Carole's family also blamed him, since they knew the story, and never spoke to Gable again.

Seems to me, she did all the work of keeping the marriage together. He just did what he wanted. Real romance? Not.
@DivineSimply4 жыл бұрын
@@sharonmullins1957 My thoughts exactly. I don't believe in Deathless Romantic Love, especially in Hollywood, a breeding ground for narcissists. I can't say I would have kicked his ass out, were it me, because I wouldn't have married the SOB to begin with. But Carole should have. She was a fabulous woman, way ahead of her time, and deserved a grown-up husband who loved her enough to keep it in his pants. Look what it took for him to wake up.

@Patricia Walton Homewrecking is never excusable. And any guy who cheats on his wife, especially a wife like Carole, isn't worth the trouble, no matter how charming or good looking he is. If he cheats WITH you, he'll one day cheat ON you. And the sooner we all start holding guys like Clark - and women like Lana - accountable and stop glamorizing who they are and what they do as Inevitable and Irresistible and romantic, the better off everyone will be. Don't excuse either one of them. Clark paid a huge price, and in later years, so did Lana. She ended up regretting her choices, and became a serious and devout Catholic.
