Thank you for the shop tour. As you probably already know, there are many small machines (mechanical structures) beyond watches which must hold the tight tolerances you talk about in the video, mainly perhaps to a tolerance or +/- 3 Microns (Millionths of a Meter), in imperial units in the US the tolerance would be +/- 1/10,000 of an inch. However, virtually all of the new complex systems designs are all metric, with the one notable holdout being sheet metal (sold to the general public) gauges in inches. Here again, if you buy enough sheet metal you can get it in metric sizes like Boeing or Gulfstream Aircraft Companies. Some of the very small very tight tolerance machines for Aerospace and Defense can get to the +/- 3 Micro tolerance spec while at the same time being made from some exotic hard metals like Inconel which have impressive corrosion resistance. The challenges in making these small machines is in measuring the structures (parts) accurately given metals tend to change in size with temperature as I am sure you are aware. In the USA the design process for small machines is much like the processes in your workshop except for some notable differences which has to do with the way expensive fine tolerance machining work is done mainly by contract in the USA. The part is designed and simulated in Mechanical CAD, then machined (CNC), small gears can still be hobbed (hobbing) on a CNC latch, the parts are measured with a CMM for rough quality control and then optically compared for fine final checking, special custom made go no-go gauges are used when possible to speed final inspection. The CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) and optical comparator equipment are located in a temperature controlled room (the room has a high air flow rate where the air is scrubbed (filtered) and re-used) with double doors, where are parts are allowed to acclimate to the room temperature before measuring and only handled with tools. In some designs the thermal expansion of metals is used in such a way as to try and cancel the effects of the expansion of metals when it effects overall operation, like with the use of Inconel as compared to 316L SS as just one example. You can use different metals in different parts of the design to cancel thermal effects which lead to increases in friction or spatial errors impacting function, much like in a watch. Very hard material like Diamond and Synthetic Ruby (Seitz) have a very low rate of thermal expansion as compared to 316L SS. So basically the design process is done like this: The complete design (all parts either in house or from supplies) is based on 3-D CAD models or generically called Mechanical CAD (SolidWorks, parametric modelling software as just one example) and Artistic Design Surface 3D CAD (Rhino, like ornamental jewelry, surface based modelling software). The surface models are imported into SolidWorks to then fit them into an assembly, and / or analyzed by simulation, mechanical stress, fatigue, etc. All of the parts have an associated final model representation (for CNC export) along with a drawing or may be issued as MBD (Model Based Definition) file. MBD is only really necessary for very large customers (like Boeing) who require a specific format to fit into their design and approval process. If MBD is not used then every part has a drawing associated with it, which can be printed out as a popular size of ANSI Size D (on ARCH Size D paper), but is usually issued electronically as a PDF. The drawings adhere to ASME Y14.5 - 2018 GD&T standard, and the assemblies are subject to stack-up tolerance analysis which is also done in SolidWorks. The 3D models are used to make the parts, or as much as the part as possible before hand work on a CNC (like KERN or Schaublin, and custom modified versions of such for work holding (perhaps 25 blanks, depending on the machine)). The smaller lathes have automated round bar feed usually with twin work holding spindles, in a Mill-Turn configuration. For ornamental design many high end jewelers are experimenting with Laser engraving of high intensity on specialized metal surfaces (fine polish, heat treat, plating and then Laser engraving) to give some interesting patterns beyond traditional machining striping and swirling (flowering), which can be automated through a CNC laser engraver (usually one blank at a time). Some very interesting results can be obtaining which look hand engraved. I think the challenge is in finding the best metal surface treatment, but I am sure your workshop could find a good metal type and surface, or perhaps even automate the metal swirling with a CNC machine, much like what is done with stripping.

Really nice and clever layout. As a watchmaker who planing on building my own workshop this is pure inspiration! I have a similar set up with Schaublin 70 + 102 lathes and a Schaublin 12 milling machine to drill coordinates with help of the DRO. To stand the bigger lathes at an angle next to the wall looks really nice. I’ll probably do the same. Thanks for an amazing channel cheers from Sweden

If you have a chance to experiment with hollow micro-speres for sand-blasting 👌❤️👍, gives another type of finish. This medium was available thru 3-M at a time. The same stuff they use in reflective paint in road signalisation (yellow or white paint mixed with this h.m.s) , another finish is also given with quartz particules . 👍
