If we look to the definitions provided by WOSTEP's Escapement course made in OCT 2005, we find a different definition of "over-banking". The same definition as provided by WOSTEP is present in the English version of "The Theory of Horology" Page 118. What is described in this video is classified as "Knocking". Its important to differentiate the two as knocking refers to excess amplitude while over-banking refers to a safety fault in the escapement allowing the disengaging of the impulse pin and the fork slot stopping the watch . In the field I have observed many different repairers use many different terms (out of action, re-banking, ETC), remember we are dealing with many languages and many generations who all do things a little different. When in conversation with other repairers remember to define your terms as they can often be misunderstood. This terminology criticism aside a very helpful video!

That over banking, i can here that load and clear . With my develop machine that amplified the beats of the watch. Tunning with my microscope, computer, while watchin the movement and clearance of the hair spring. ❤️❤️❤️

I read a book where definition of overbanking goes something like this "overbanking takes place when the pallet moves over to the opposite banking pin without having had any contact with the roller jewel". It says most common cause of overbamking is a guard finger that is too short.

Hi Kalle, it's my third viewing of this video, i watched it when you first uploaded, now i'm doing a couple of watches for a family friend, a lovely Avia 9k case and a very nice A Schild Cal.1203, also an Ingersoll with a Ronda Cal.1215 17j has a pin lever escapement, this one is overbanking, thank you for explaining it so well, and it's remedy, i will remove some grease from escape wheel and if that doesn't work a thinner mainspring i think i have one, cheers Kalle, i always enjoy watching your videos ⌚🤞.👍

I serviced an early Omega pocket watch a few years ago. I can't remember why, or how, it happened, but I think that the MS of the proper thickness was impossible to find. It's my own watch, and I just wanted it running. Well, sure enough, it's doing just what and how you explained it, Kalle. I'll check into my records as see if I can spend a little more time trying to find the right MS for it so I can slow that bugger down. Thanks for the very clear explanation. Cheers.

Kali good vid I always check the mainspring dimensions to the specifications of the calibre odd occasions I’ve fitted the next size up to compensate low amplitude on the movement it was a old Rolex super balance 620 my own watch refurbishment which required a stronger spring

Isn't this called rebanking? I think what they call overbanking is when the impulse pin goes past the pallet fork (and the watch stops of course) I might be wrong though.

Thanks Kalle! Great tip! Thickness = strength, length = duration, what does height equal? Obviously we need a height and it’s usually 0.1mm less than the inner height of the barrel and less lid thickness. But does it matter if it’s 0.1mm below the lid or more? Ta!

I'd like to know the relationship between the size of the barrel and the length of the spring and how this relates to the power reserve. I'm guessing if the barrel is too small or the spring too long then the spring wouldn't be able to fully unwind and you'd lose some power. Thank you for this video, mechanical movements are really interesting.

I use some simple calculations for a mainspring size to get close to the original size. For the thickness, I devide the ID of the main barrel by 87. For the length I multiply the ID of the main barrel with 35. (for Swiss watches). And the height 0,1 mm less than the depth of the main barrel (and substract the thickness of the lid...)

I have wondered about this sometimes. If you reduce the thickness of the mainspring to correct overbanking, that would leave you with more space in the mainspring barrel. Can you then increase the length of the mainspring proportionately, to increase the power reserve?

On some of my Valjoux 7733s sometimes there is a galloping sound even though on some of them the amplitude is as low as 240°. Also it can be dependent on the position. What could be the cause of that?

Overbanking is when the watch has stopped and roller jewel is out of the pallet fork.

I develop my own techniques in tuning and the most accurate tunning . Most of the watch from factory is in factory default tunning not fine tunning. Because they need to produced more in a day... 🤣🤣

That's not the common notation. Common notations are always expressed in algebraic formulae. What you wrote is the verbal notation in simplified text, of a grouping derived from first principles. Good enough for this exact issue but certainly not good for a watchmaking engineer. I'm not having a go at you. I am, however pointing out that you are still very much the amateur and that there is room to improve your engineering and scientific literacy, especially when putting put your content. (I do love your content, please don't stop .. I merely appeal to your exacting nature to express yourself as exactly as your workflow). Warm regards from Sydney.
