My daughter is a trained equestrian and worked for several years as a riding instructor for the Guard. It is just remarkable just how much work goes into training the mounted Guards, and the time and effort to detail each mount. I am glad you had the chance to step behind the gates and bring this remarkable video to us.

@@KittyDillion The morning starts at 6am with the Watering Order which is a one hour exercise ride through the streets of London for the horses and riders not on duty as Kings Life Guard that day. That small number of horses and riders on duty as Kings Life Guard get to ride from Hyde Park to Horse Guards when it's their day to relieve the other regiment (usually every 2 to 3 days) and it's why they don't spend more than those 2 to 3 days at Horse Guards, so as to ensure the those few horses get access to exercise. It's also why you don't see the same few horses coming back every time their regiment takes over duty at Horse Guards - they're rotate the horses on duty as Kings Life Guard. There are other times during the day when the horses at Hyde Park are worked/trained for other duties in which HC is involved. You can tell by the horses' condition that they get plenty of exercise in addition to great food, daily care and access to immediate vet treatment, if required.

What an amazing video John, it took me back to 1983 when we (hubby, 2 sons and I) were invited to these barracks to watch the troopers mount up for the parade then off to their daily guard duties. We were friends of a Life Guard Cpl of Horse who my husband, a Scotland yard detective met at the horrific Hyde Park Bombings. He was on the anti terrorist squad and in most films of it you'll see him sweeping up and collecting every bit of evidence there. That's why your blogs always touch my heart, especially the Blues and Royals. Xx

First horse we see is one of my favourites lovely Monty , I've been wondering where the gorgeous boy was hiding 😍. The magnificent huge Shires the Drum horses what a glorious sight and for the first time we see you stroking a horse 😀. I'd need at hoist not a mounting block ! Good of them bringing Harry out for everyone to see the size of him ! The explanation of the kit by the Trooper was so interesting and the amount of work that goes on , on a daily basis to keep both the horses tack and Troopers uniforms immaculate was so well described , exceedingly well done to the Lady Trooper in front of all the officers , she must have been nervous . I'm going to watch and listen again , and wait impatiently for part 2 ! .THANK YOU THANK YOU including those who invited you along !

PART TWO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o16zc6xma9CDoKs A HUGE 'Thank you' to London District and the MOD for facilitating access to this remarkable event. --------------------------------------- The Princess Elizabeth Cup This ritual takes place every year and is a highlight of every young, talented mounted Trooper’s career. This is the Princess Elizabeth Cup Competition and its aim, to identify the top four Troopers in The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals, which make up the four divisions of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, is fiercely sought after. Not least because the finest finishers will form His Majesty The King’s Retinue on the King’s Birthday Parade in June 2024. The Competition which began in 1949 in the reign of King George VI, was created by The Late Queen Elizabeth II while She was still Princess Elizabeth. She awarded the cup for the first time at the Richmond Horse Show to Trooper Stout of The Life Guards. The competition is guaranteed to build character and discipline but is also designed to build Troop, Squadron and Regimental cohesion through friendly rivalry, as everyone in the regiment comes together to make their chosen soldiers the best of the best. Twelve finalists compete in the judging and the top eight finishers will meet The King at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May when the best of the best will be awarded the prized, silver Princess Elizabeth Cup in the main arena. ---------------------------------------

Oh my Lordy wiping Monty down must be a long job…..he’s a big lad, and for the Princess Elizabeth Cup turn out has to be perfection……like better than usual perfection.Soooo much work right there and everyone mucking in….I mean, I’m a horse person…..I KNOW how much work it is to turn a horse out so perfectly(many MANY show turn outs behind me😳) but then all the riders kit is just show turn out to the max….and I’ll be perfectly honest, I DID wonder if there was room in the cartouche for a sneaky ciggy or two 🤣And Northumberlands marking is a sock with ermine spots. It’s a huge job trying to keep all the white stuff white, and all the shiny stuff shiny when you want excellent turnout……..it’s just so much work. You now know why the farriers carry an axe…..you probably don’t want to know why that axe also has a bloody big spike. Oooooooh and the drum horses!! I LOVE the drum horses…..shires are gorgeous…..yes John, Juno is a mare 😂. I’ve ridden a shire…..they’re cool, ESPECIALLY cantering, like a rocking horse. So cool to get a good look at the tack….I THOUGHT it was a surcingle, but also to see what they’re looking for when judging the turnouts😇 Ooooh the Warrant Officers and NCOs mess 😳so behave peasants 🤣This is just fantastic John…….thank you so much for this. I love this…..brings back many fond memories of setting up and show prepping, last minute tasks like oiling down muzzles, checking bits, and making sure everything is in place…..hehe I love the way the mounted trooper has one job…….sit there and stay CLEAN!!!

Oh John what can I say I am made up for you. What a privilege and an honour to be invited to view the proceedings. Well done indeed. I watched a documentary a while back and I think I’m right in saying the winner of the competition wins a civilian saddle as well as meeting (the Queen at that time) the King. What an immense amount of work goes into looking after these horses and kit on any day never mind special occasions. Thank you so much for sharing

I sincerely doubt you were “yelled at” and in any case, normally this would never happen. This is a very rare thing. John has been to Hyde Park before but normally there is a STRICTLY no filming policy. And even with media days, such as this, normally it’d be a couple of print outlets and maybe a tv crew. To be allowed this access as a YTuber is unprecedented and really a big deal, and truly wonderful that John can bring us along with him into the stables.
