When I was young this is the movie that made me realise that I enjoyed the score as much as the visuals. I particularly remember the Ice Dance scene, massive turning point in my life realising how powerful film music can be.

never loved movie music so much as a kid in the 90s until I saw this movie... then I researched Danny Elfman and found out he composed so many other themes I loved (Batman, Simpsons, Beetlejuice, Tales from the Crypt, Batman Returns), and so many more later on in life!

I bought the soundtrack when I was in my late thirties )I'm 67 now). I used it to go to sleep. It worked like a charm every time. One day I took the CD with me on a long trip and listened to the whole thing, not realizing that there was one of the most romantic songs I have ever heard at the end of the CD, by Tom Jones - "With These Arms". I don't even like Tom Jones, but, I fell in love with him that day, lol. Since then, I've found videos of him singing with Janis Joplin, of all people.

45:20 this Db/f is the neapolitan chord, a very especial chord for this style, because it makes the bridge from classical to modern tonal music. This happens because this chord was one of the first to force composers to chromatic mediant relationships. It is a substitute for the subdominant and its intensified form, this is why you have the G after this . 1:01:00 The modulation to chromatic mediant is common romantic technique, it is beautiful, but nothing incredible. Regarding the inversions, of course one has to use inversions in classical music, hard is not to do it? . Russian romantism is a very important influence there in the ST. Tchaikovsky and Co.

It might resemble 50s or 60s suburbia but it's not. Jim's father has a VCR. Personal four head VCRs didn't exist until the late 70s.

I was referring to the aesthetic of the neighborhood and the production design, not the time the film is set. The rich solid colors of those ranch houses is super 1950s/60s styled. 🙂
