Verve Records and the Louis Armstrong House Museum present “Behind the Song,” a new series spotlighting Louis Armstrong’s most beloved recordings and the stories behind them.
The biggest hit of Louis Armstrong’s lifetime came from an incredibly unlikely source. Ricky Riccardi from the Louis Armstrong House Museum shares rare artifacts to help tell the story behind the #1 hit that knocked The Beatles off the top of the charts.

You are a very lucky man to have such angel sprinklings, I hope they are kept in a very safe place/museum.

I guess you could say the last stop for the record was the Grammy award, but the last stop for the song was when he performed it in the film version of Hello, Dolly! with Barbra Streisand--an historic moment of film music.

Thanks so much for this one. I remember how Hello Dolly came out of the woodwork, and how odd it seemed to be when it was played on the WABC/WMCA lineups. I knew ABOUT Louis, and was a new listener to top-40 (I had been rather a music snob until the age of 12), so I remember trying to reconcile how this one really fit in with the other songs. It was many years before I realized it was an anomaly. And I just found out (thank you) that the release was PRIOR to the show's general popularity. When I finally heard the song from the show album, the lyric "...well hello, Dolly" seemed wrong to me. It had to be "...this is Louissssssss, Dolly".
