Van Neistat reminds me of myself a lot. To keep myself away from the darkness I must try to be busy. Fixing things is one of the best feelings. If I do nothing I go into a deep dark place in my mind. A place of self hatred. Self loathing. Walks in nature for hours and hours are also quite good.

An entertaining video that gives us insight into Van Neistat's way of working and how he thinks. The "10 years" he says it takes to learn something well is arbitrary, but basically some time is needed to learn your craft and even more time is needed to have something worthwhile to say. I remember a travel journalist I spoke with years ago was often asked by aspiring travel writers: "How do I become a travel writer?" His answer was to spend years travelling the world, speaking with people, being inquisitive to find out how they lived, opening your eyes to observe your surroundings and how people interact with them. So it is not only learning a craft, it is also training the eyes and mind to tell a story that engages us.

That '10 years' thing is really true. I graduated college in Graphic Design 6 years ago now and I'm just now feeling like I have some sort of grasp and subconscious style to my work. I discovered Van in his HBO series he did with Casey -- been a fan of these two bros since. Been loving Van's Spirited Man Vlog series, it's really great.
