An entertaining video that gives us insight into Van Neistat's way of working and how he thinks. The "10 years" he says it takes to learn something well is arbitrary, but basically some time is needed to learn your craft and even more time is needed to have something worthwhile to say. I remember a travel journalist I spoke with years ago was often asked by aspiring travel writers: "How do I become a travel writer?" His answer was to spend years travelling the world, speaking with people, being inquisitive to find out how they lived, opening your eyes to observe your surroundings and how people interact with them. So it is not only learning a craft, it is also training the eyes and mind to tell a story that engages us.

Van, you touched on some of the concepts of learning KZbin and engagement. If I might grant you with a word of encouragement from one spirited man to another, the momentum is behind you, stay with it, run like your being chased by a mountain lion and don’t get run over (or eaten in this metaphor). Points taken: it;s not easy, you will suffer and sometimes succumb to terrible addictions, you will obsess, you will question and become tired, your world will suffer, friends and associates who care will help you, the sun will rise, things will brighten, the path behind you will guide others, and your contributions will supersede your earthly soul... and the sweat, sacrifice, and success will inspire others in ways you can not fathom of fully appreciate.
