I agree no claps needed for this song because of the nature of the song but you also really can't just not clap for that kind of performance. I mean specifically for Sam's version I mean the acting choices, the singing technique, it's so good it's hard not to clap. but yeah, this song starts out fun but then when you see the realization in her face as the song progresses it will really break your heart into pieces.

I saw this in the US tour. After this song, the audience was silent for several moments as everyone just sat there in shock. It was absolutely silent. Then, a slow clap started and the audience burst into the loudest applause of the whole musical. It was one of the most insane moments of my time watching musical theater

What I loved about "All You Wanna Do" is how the actress starts out the song so happy and in love. She skillfully takes the song from that to being bitter, disillusioned, and in terrible pain. The raw pain she sings about in the end is gutwrenching.

That’s Samantha for you. Every performance I’ve seen by others of this song are great, and each have their own unique way of expressing the tragedy of Howard… but Sam absolutely mastered the song. How she goes from playful, through frustrated, to anger and pain all while keeping her singing to match those emotions is absolutely phenomenal. I’m so glad she got the call and accepted the role (did you know she almost gave up on her dream of performing on broadway? This role was her breakthrough, and I’m so glad she didn’t give up!)

And the more you listen the more nuances you find. After repeatedly listening I actually find the saddest part to be in the beginning. "Ever since I was a child I'd make the boys go wild" As if she was responsible for the actions of these "boys?" (aka grown men)...

The way the men in the audience kept laughing when she tried to shake the hands off of her. Infuriating. And you can tell the women were silent for a reason. Edit: You can't really tell in this video. In other bootlegs, you can clearly hear several men outwardly laugh when she shakes off the hands/ when she's breaking down. It's painful to watch and infuriating to think about.

Anne wasn’t married, but she was set to marry another man who she truly loved. Most people believe she actually left court in order to escape Henry when he showed interest in her. Also, there’s no evidence she ever cheated on Henry, she was likely beheaded because she couldn’t give him a son and because she tried to get too involved in politics.

I just re-listened to the studio recording of this song and while Aimee Atkinson does a great job, she seems to focus more on it being a pretty sound rather than putting emotion into the end. Considering that this song is styled after Britney Spears and Ariana Grande, makes sense - hide the pain and make a pretty song. It's easy to miss the message if you only listen to the studio album. Aimee definitely shows more emotion in the West End bootleg I've seen, but Sam Pauly can make me cry with the pain and despair she emotes.

@@norasshelfdiscovery7883 They did that on purpose didn't they? the same way any concert is slightly different to the recorded version they recorded the songs just as recordings then when they perform them they're slightly different for the sake of the stage and the story, I dont actually like this song from the album but I loved it on stage. it's so cleverly done. imagine being the writers going from the Edinburgh fringe to west end, broadway, ships ... so so good

its even sadder when you realize Katherine was only 19 when she died. she was an adult for literally only a year of her life. she was brutally raped and traumatized her entire life. historians don’t even believe she even had an affair, that it was a rumor that killed her. she wins hands down.

From the several versions I have watched and read the comments of (so take this with a grain of salt), apparently the "affair" wasn't even the main reason for being beheaded but her being "damaged goods" because she wasn't a virgin when Henry took her. I forgot his name but the last guy allegedly blackmailed her because he knew about her "impurity" at marriage.

Poor kid was only 12-13 with Mannox (who was 36) 14 with Derhem (who was around 25), 15-17 when she was forced into marrying the King (who was 49) and 17-19 when she was executed because there were rumours that she was having an affair, even though there was no proof and more of her actions suggested she wanted nothing to do with Culpepper, since she asked her servant to tell him she didn't want to meet with him anymore (they only met up to talk whilst being closely chaperoned by her servant). The only thing they had to convict her on was a vague "love" letter that wasn't even seen as proof at the time and has now been discovered to have been written under duress. What they executed her for in the end was having previous "relationships" and not telling the King about it.

@@leaveittoweaver4525 they've found recently that that is a myth, her final speech was actually petty average, she asked them to pray for her, asked that her family would not be punished and that her servants would be given a gift, and that was really it. The poor thing was too scared to say anything else. That speech has been thought to be fact for a while, but I think it's a myth. Either way I still feel bad for her considering her childhood abuse and lack of supervision and any kind of real love. Sorry if that sounded rude, I just thought I'd mention it.

There is a key element that kind of goes unnoticed until someone pointed it out. Based on the studio album Kay Howard’s song has more background vocals on the chorus; but on stage they stripped them down to where the background vocals only say “play times over”. By doing this it not only made her story more tragic it in a way it represented how isolated she actually was while all this abuse was happening to her. The sad part is even some historians still blame her for being excited even though clearly she was being taken advantage of and tossed aside.

Exactly, and that isolation is exacerbated by the fact that the other queens don't look directly at her for the vast majority of the song. And when they do look at her, it is either with entirely blank expressions, or mild hostility. They made it in a way that those just... aren't the other queens anymore. Those are blank slates representing the isolating and predatory people in her life. It's equal parts brilliant and heartbreaking.

Agnes Howard literally ignored her step-granddaughter getting molested, Lady Rochford despite being involved with the scandal tried to pin the blame on K Howard, and not to mention the amount of gossip at court spread around by some of the ladies within the court.

For what I know, the only one she "admitted to love" is Francis, they were gonna get married, but she was still a child and they were stopped. She didn't really wanted any of them, she was raped by all, including Thomas, he forced himself on her. That's the only contact she knew her short life, and to be killed because of it makes me cry every time I think about it, all of them deserved more. I'm so happy someone thought of making a musical about them, so they name can live on, so people can remember them as something more than his wives

The creepy thing was that she was saying she going to get married when she was still a child... Its something predators STILL use today. The "I love you s much, I just had to" thing... Look it up, its a manipulative tactic. What really gets me with this song is how reminiscent the lyrics are of when your a young teen talking with your friends about boys and boyfriends. It actually sounds like we used to and it just adds to the shock value. For me it really adds to the impact of the message.

It does mean they've never had something like that happen to them... but innocence has a limit, and ouch that's gotta hurt once they realize. I find this song and don't loose your head to be rather ironic in some ways. The cheerful music that is reminiscent of my teen years also is a bit... so yeah I love what they did with this musical and love the depth. I really wish I'd been able to see it live.

What you take away from this number is based on who is performing. Some “katherines” play her as youthful and naive, others play her like this - stuck, tormented, abused, and defeated. Based on which direction the singer chooses it gives a very different tone.

This whole song puts her story in such a different perspective than I've seen it presented previously. Usually the depictions I see are of her as a promiscuous tease who thought she could get away with having an affair. I cried the first time I saw it and my brain put things together, going from "...oh" to "...OH. OH NO. NO NO."

I’ve read a few opinions of her by historians, and some (especially from the early 20th century) say that she was quite the troublemaker, and one even claims she was as much as a predator as Francis Dereham was… Let that sink in. She was a child, for crying out loud! Like, I don’t care how badly you despise children and their behaviour, you don’t say things like that! Even if it was true, and unless someone invents a Time Machine and go back to find out for sure, we’ll never truly find out, but even then, that’s still flat out abuse! Taking advantage of a child like that, in my book, is the most disgusting act anyone can do. I went to see SIX two weeks ago, and I cannot believe why I let myself wait so long. Phenomenal experience, tragic, entertaining, heart wrenching, hilarious. It really makes you think and forget about the passing of time, while still being the most entertaining show I have seen for a very long time. The “international sensation” title is well deserved! I cannot recommend seeing the show live enough. If it’s not on your list of things to do, then what are you Eve doing with your life? All queens had really entertaining songs and were quite enjoyable, while still making you think about what they went through. Then this song came on. Laughing my ass off during her intro (when she talks about the other queens’ songs). Nice rhythm, great vocals, really got the “K Howard is here and fun’s begun” going. “And even when I was a child, I made the boys go wild” Wait, hang on… that’s… okay, I guess if we’re being careful, we could say stuff like that… And as the song went on, the childish descriptions of the things she did and men were doing to her, just got more and more disturbing. The ending though. Yeah there was still an applause, but I’m convinced it was for the performance, out of respect. Each song got an ovation before, but this time you could really feel something was different. I was in tears. So many emotions, and to think that not only was she abused, but it started when she was a child and never stopped then got the blame by some men who can’t keep their sausage in their pants is just… and how many we don’t even hear about? Even today… “Yeah those were different times back then” I’m not so sure. And I do applaud each and every lady who played K Howard, because this is without a doubt the hardest song in the whole play. Then seeing Samantha Pauly perform it? She just takes the song to a whole new level. By far my favourite performance, because not only her voice is perfect, her control is spot on, she really puts the emotions where they should be.

As a theatre kid, I think the reason you see and feel the emotions better on broadway is because broadway is extremely exaggerated. Theatre in general is exaggerated, but broadway is the biggest, the most dramatic, and told course the highest level of theatre.

I think it's really impactful how K Howard is partially styled after Britney Spears. Both of them were overly-sexualized from a young age and originally rewarded for being fun and sexy but later punished for it. Both had their lives steered by men trying to profit off of them and control them. Both were brought down by vicious rumors. I'm glad Britney at least was able to regain control of her own story.

Honestly. I think hers is the sadest too, at least according to the musical. It's just so depressing how used she was. Also, you may realize how with the 4th queen, she pushes off their hands off and they stay off. For her, they keep coming back and get more invasive. So sad. 😥

I think it's interesting how the audience chuckles during "playtime's over"; like K Howard is almost "owning" her sexuality in the first few choruses, but then you can see the active damage it does when she starts the "it's never EVER different" and realize how much she's suffering. Sam's performance really shows that what she experienced was multiple assaults and grooming, and just how tragic her situation really is up until that point. The worst thing is this still happens today.

One of my favorite things about sex is every version and every actor plays the character so different and so amazing. Sam pauly is so talented and makes me cry every time as someone who is a sexual assault survivor I relate so much and it truely show cases those emotions amazingly. This whole show is about not comparing women but personally the broadway cast is my favorite and I absolutely adore and find different things to love every time and no matter my emotions or day I can always relate to at least one character and omg heart of stone hit me like a ton of bricks last time

This one always hits hard because it reminds me of a historical fact that doesn't make it into the show but is so freaking devastating and sums up Katherine Howard so well - when she was informed she would be executed the next day, she requested the block be brought to her room so that she could practicing kneeling and placing her head on it so she didn't trip or look foolish the next day. That kills me every time, to think about spending your last night knowing you were going to be beheaded in a few hours, practicing so it went ok. And knowing how scary it must have been knowing she didn't have the benefit of a swordsman from Calais, as Anne Boleyn did. The axe could be an absolutely brutal way to die (see Countess Margaret Pole and much later Mary, Queen of Scots), though she was lucky it was fast. And there were few witnesses and no records of her last words. So alone and forgotten. Abused by men all her life and neglected by the people who should have been caring her for her, then shoved into a marriage that should not have existed. Just devastating.

As a singer, I can feel the pain behind through every verse, but it slowly creeps up on you until that last different and then you realize just how much pain she was in up until she died...

Personally I think the West End portrayal of Anne Boleyn was much more nuanced and sad. The K Howard portrayals are closer but I really do love the Broadway version. I think there are some good shots of the West End version if you want to look. UPDATE: I just saw the US touring cast (Aragon cast) and HOLY HELL they all blew me away. I knew I was gonna be picky about Boleyn and Howard’s portrayals and they girls both nailed it. Anne had the nuance of bubbly popular slightly ditsy one instead of just the stupid superficial one, which I felt like what I saw of the OBC tended to lean into. And K Howard…oh my god. Chills and tears, which surprised me given how familiar I was with the show. I can’t put into words how good it was. DEFINITELY see this show on tour if it comes your way.

There is one major element in "All You Wanna Do" that a lot of people gloss over. And it makes the song 1,000x more disturbing. (tw: S.A. , child abuse) In my criminal psych class, one of the things we learned is that one of the "symptoms" of a child experiencing sexual assault was the child acting aggressively sexual or using strong sexual play/language. Basically, the abused child is groomed into thinking their abuse is "normal" so they act like how the perpetrators want them to behave. Now, look at "All You Wanna Do." The beat makes you feel like you're in a club, and the lyrics contain multiple sexual innuendos and references. And remember how Howard was only 13 when her story started..... yeah.
